I've got a Soul Eater with specialization in Necro and Conjuration (for Web and Evards). My Conjuration DC is just one point behind Necro (looks like Immortal Will adds to Conjuration DC as well - bug or tooltip error, either way I'm not complaining), and I was looking over Trap the Soul spell - seemed like a nice flavor choice for a Soul Eater. Anyway, according to wiki it works against undead and has a will save, much like Devour the Soul. I was thinking of taking it, but wiki description of material cost is somewhat unclear and possibly outdated.

Does the spell work at all against mobs with more than 30 HD, or are those considered too powerful? If so, does it still require Average Khyber shards? I'll probably use omnispell stones anyway, but it would be good to know. I can't test myself since spell swap is already on timer, and I don't want to waste a Blood of the Dragon if it doesn't work.

Nope.

Trap the soul spell is great in Heroics.. worthless in epics.
Only time I ever take it now is to farm CR7 earth elementals for the soulgems to craft hardness ritual...
It is unfortunate that a spell with a high cost and special components didn't get evolved to work beyond CR30.

Omnispell stones are not working with trap the soul spell.

Omnispell stones are not working with trap the soul spell.

Are you certain? I know I was casting the 30HD version just last night on a variety of mobs in the Lords of Dust chain and in Madstone (skellies).
I have nothing but omnistones to fuel that spell, too. Perhaps it's just the certain HD versions that don't work?

Edit: Sorry, I should have stated that this was on my wizard.

But still a chance to work. They could always roll a 1.

Not saying it's a good chance to work, just that it's a chance. The luckiest man around still loses once in a great while, while the biggest loser still wins once in a blue cheese moon.

For Warlocks you don't need the Khyber shards, just crushed black pearls spell mat.
Cuts through deathward and works on many Death Effect immune mobs.

But with the Heroic intended hit dice cap, it is Worthless in Epic content. I do hope that is addressed as this is my favorite spell.
