View Full Version : Duoing Warlocks..

The wife and I need to TR our completionist characters.
The route we took getting there involved picking the classes that could complement and support each other as we did it purely as a duo.
Now the Warlock has arrived.
For those who have played with them which would be the better option.
1 additional life as - 2 X Warlock, not sure yet how to build one but can figure it out as we go along
or
2 additional lives as - 1 Warlock + 1 Whatever.... Could probably get another past life (Wiz for me, Monk for her).
Most of the gear we had getting to completionist has been binned. Didn't expect another class for some time (Doh!).
Time isn't a factor, we're not playing masses at the moment but we'll get there eventually whichever route we go
So, any thoughts welcomed.
Cheers.

Depends I guess. Warlocks don't have much in the ways of self healing. Temp hit points from many sources yeah, but only one actual heal. I could see a duo of tainted scholor (main) with enough soul eater to use steal life force as the duo's ranged attacker while the other does enlightened spirit as their main tree with soul eater to get steal life force as the duo's 'tank' and providing temp hit points. Not sure how effective it would be in epics. But it should demolish groups of trash mobs with ease.
And if you each take a different pact, you'd have slightly different casting roles.

Thanks for that.
Does which Pact you take at level 1 matter much?

Pact damage type, save type, for the pact damage what class feats you'll get as you level, and what bonus spells you'll get. It'll also limit what alignments you can have. While any pact can be taken with any alignment, you can't toggle them on or use pact abilities if the wrong alignment. This goes as follows:
Fey: any
Fiend: non-good
Great Old One: non-lawful
I don't have a full list of the pact spells though. I know fiend pact gets Command at level 1 while great old one gets entangle at level one and knock at level 5.

I'm running a level 2 human pally/everything else warlock with aura/blast, it seems OK. Lay on hands for healing + cha mod to all saves + force of personality adds cha mod a second time to will saves for overkill. So far for me, the build seems acceptable for a character that's only going to 20 to sample the class. Once I learn the class maybe I'll TR to a build more focused about epic destiny synergies, but for heroics, aura, burst and melee seems fine.
Another option is something I often do, a halfling for dragonmark of healing, its pretty good if you're only running through the heroic levels for TR.
I guess if you're duo'ing and wanted one person to play more of a healer role you could play a 18warlock/2paladin dragonmarked halfling, I figure you'd get plenty of heals out of that!

Warlock basically plays as a sorc, which means it dominates heroic content. The only hickups you might run into are the few quests where their are nasty traps, and maybe the lack of evasion if you end up capping in elite reavers reach. But there is enough high level content now that you can easily not have to do reavers reach anyway.
Oh yeah one other hickup is that you will probably not get ransack, unless you are patient enough to individually target and zap every box, probably easier to do a few hard runs of other quests tho.

my Guildy and I are duoing warlocks now. One of us took the dragonmark of healing, and that seems to be more than enough to cope with problems.
Not really having any idea what we are doing (maybe even less than usual) is actually quite exciting!

Cone blast from soul eater can fix this issue. Seems they listened to my feedback on lam about it's range being too short using Burning Hand's cone, and upped the range to other cones such as Scorch. Not quite as wide a cone, but longer range so it evens out.

Warlock has a couple very distinct types of gameplay... the three I can think of are Melee Enlightened Spirit, DC Instakill Souleater, DC CC Caster Fey Pact style. Chances are both of you can play Warlock and have very differing experiences with itemization, build, spell choices, ect. Warlocks are VERY specialized... Something like how a sorc is specialized in Damage and element, Wizard is specialized in in a specific school and DCs for the school.

Halfling never even occurred to me. Hate the little monsters.
But for one life......Hmmm need to think about it.
Thanks :)

It's not like the smaller size would affect a blasting warlock's damage.

I figured that.
I just can't get passed the fact that they look like an Orang-utan wearing a nappy when they run...

I would just play a human and heal with scrolls, or maybe warforged with recon scrolls ,if that's your cup of tea. My warlock is sitting at level 7 with 36 umd, unbuffed. Obviously too low level to be wearing umd (shroud) gear.

Yeah the UMD bit occured to me after we rolled up a couple of Warlocks to test out before TRing the main characters.
The +5 UMD at level 2 came as a shock. Unsure how long it will stay there though or whether it may be "rebalanced" at a latter date
