Perma Shield Enhancement Bug

The permanent shield enhancement from the enlightened tree does not work while wearing medium armor. Though the buff is on the bar it is not stopping magic missiles.

Then why is it I almost died from magic missile spam while wearing a chain shirt?

I should mention I am getting all the benefits of the shield spell, except protection from magic missile
