View Full Version : Beside the obvious, what's the differences between the X-Bows and which do U prefer?

I learned early on the HR Xbow did more damage than LR Xbow, and that G Xbow did the most damage but was slowest.
Is there any other reason(s) (beside perhaps the + of the weapon or augment/enhancements) that I am not aware of?
Is it just personal preference?
Great crossbow:
Damage and Type: 2d8 Pierce
Critical threat range 18-20/x2
Repeating Light Crossbow:
Damage and Type: 1d8 Pierce
Critical threat range 19-20/x2
Repeating Heavy Crossbow:
Damage and Type: 1d10 Pierce
Critical threat range 19-20/x2

I prefer the R. Heavy crossbow the most, however I am willing to use a R. Light if the properties make it worth the drop in damage. I wouldn't use the Great crossbow due to the slower rate of fire.

GREAT CROSSBOW has that knockdown on a roll 20, of course. Or is that considered obvious?

Nope, I was not aware of that.

As pheonix says, I typed the wrong thing. Sorry. Guess it wasnt obvious to my fingers what my brain was meaning. Although, ahem, if its great its gotta be heavy, right? right? :)

Mechanic now offers a number of buffs which apply to gt xbows but not repeaters: extra dmg from Sharpshooter, Lacerating Shots, & cores; +2 vs +1 crit multiplier bonus from Expert Builder; +20% vs +10% Ranged Alacrity from Mechanical Reloader; +1[W] and double vorpal range (19-20) from Sniper (meaning twice as many knockdowns). [Some of these bonuses apply to all non-repeating xbows, but there's little reason to use lt/hvy xbows instead of gt xbows.]
My impression is hvy repeaters are still better DPS overall, but gt bows are strong enough on rog 18+ to be a viable alternative; essentially, you trade the extra DPS from higher RoF of repeaters for the free CC from gt xbow knockdown. Would be nice if there were more named gt xbows (http://ddowiki.com/page/Category:Great_Crossbows), though, particularly for upper-teen heroic lvls.
