View Full Version : What are the advantages, no matter how insignificant, of Fighter over Barbarian?

I'm feeling kinda drawn to the Fighter class, which is unusual for me.
So I'm curious as to what can be done with Fighter that can't be done with Barbarian.
And I don't consider advantages to be a zero-sum game. If a class has only one thing it can do that no other class can, that's still an advantage it has. Just for the sake of definition.
So what is everything that a Fighter is capable of doing or becoming that a Barbarian cannot possibly do?
(Let's just ignore the existence of Paladin for this topic, too)

Well a fighter can be centerd.
He can splash monk and pal... for good defense.
But he cannot heal on hit/kill, has way less damage, no source of selfheal if purish that works in ee.
Fighter has many feats, to many so that you dont need it at all.
And uhm, did i mention horribly low dps compared to barb? And some stuff in enchas not working?
Well uhm, a fighter can be a shield toon vanguard, but weaker then a pal..
Fighter can be a 2 weapon fighter, but weaker then pal...
IT has better defenses then barb but is overall way way weaker then current barb and pal..

They have lots of feats, so can get multiple feat chains, like Whirlwind Attack and Greater Whatever Fighting.
They can multi-class with Monk.
That's about it.

The fighters advantage is in its versatility
It has access up to 11 Additional feats - 1 at First Level and then 1 for every Even Fighter level after that. Also one Level of Fighter gives you all Armor Proficiency as well as Shield and Tower Shield Proficiency.
This combined with racial and standard feats opens up the potential of multiple directions (Jack of all Trades) or Heavy Specialization.
Example is having enough feats to go THF and have Archery Feats giving both good close and ranged DPS
Or going Tactical having a wide array of tactical abilities like Stun, SAP, Trip and Sunder to suppress or weaken enemies.
Its next advantage is that it can multiclass with any other class - the only limitation is based on the Alignment you have. Fighter has always multi-classed well with Barbarian, Bard and Monk. With the EK tree now available Fighter/Wizard(sorcerer) builds have options available to them. Fighter/Cleric builds also have some nice options as well.
Fighters weakness is in its saves especially on a pure fighter. Multi-classing can be used to solve this issue.

Having loads of extra feats also make fighters easier to level imo. Fighters paladins and barbs all qualify for improved critical at level 8, but only fighters get a feat al level 8. The others have to wait til level 9, which means they cant pick improved 2 handed fighting at level 9 like the fighter can, they have to wait til level 12, and so on.

Presuming you're talking pure or mostly-pure ftrs vs barbs, the advantages are: tons of feats, Power Surge, Haste boost, extra action boost, +15% doublestrike from Kensei capstone, Kensei focus bonuses, Keen Edge, Vanguard for S&B bonuses, Stalwart D. for defensive bonuses.
The problem of course is that these perks don't make up for ftr's biggest drawbacks, namely a lack of self-healing, poor saves, and falling behind the DPS curve compared to pure barbs & pallies.

This. A level or three but thats about it.
And not on a barb, capstone's so good you need to be pure.

Well, you can multiclass a fighter with druid and ranger for Swf and twf wolf build or if going pure can try a Vanguard fighter with a mix of kensai and stalwart and at least can use reconstruct or rejuvenation cocoon and clickies (like displacement) without having to drop rage. Fighter also has many feats so can take Manyshot for some ranged dmg or taking another fighting style like for example fitting both THF and Twf feats for aoe and single target dmg. Or taking both THF and shield feats for tank options with Stalwart/Vanguard switching enhancements. Or multiclassing with monk and paladin for evasion with good saves for fights like Miior, etc. There is also another build like 12Ftr/7Bard that can combine swashbuckler with stalwart, vanguard and kensai and have some useful Bard spells.
But currently a pure Barbarian>Fighter

Yes, 9 fighter/9 druid/2 ranger is a very strong build and gets you a fighter life (it isn't quite as good as 10 druid/4 fighter/6 ranger because dance of death really good). Barbarian doesn't have the feats to make TWF/SWF/natural fighting all synergize together...not that it needs to.
