use steam to power xp grinder
/rinse repeat

if you have a tier4 twist free can just position the xp grinder mid air above you and spam energy burst fire...

mhhh I dont have any numbers on how much steam power is needed to generate 1 xp, and I havent done the math yet on the snow shoveling and wood chopping but I think the bottom line is

Yes, some ppl forget that DDO is only a game, and that there is no reason to make a huge fuss over it when the maintenance is quite obviously a necessity. But my input certainly won't stop them from whining and demanding compensation. Granted, it is still my favorite game of all times, but just a game nonetheless.

I feel the Turbine team deserves appreciation. DDO wouldn't be here without them and their occasional down times for server maintenance, which is present in every online game. If they are doing their best on the matter is only to be determined in the office, but I trust that they are doing fantastic.

since I missed it at start ( and since I spent my day fighting something called BGP i didn't have time to check the forums until now )

- Fiber channel is not Network. It's a Storage Interface. ( as is Sata, IDE/ATAPI, SCSI, ... )
Ok, it's carried on fiber, but that's because usually there's a lot of disks connected to it, so it needs the bandwidth to feed all those disks with data.

- The routing towards Turbine is now carried by both AT&T and Telia, so depending your location you will use one or the other.
From my experiments it's a bit smoother ( but I'm in Europe and we European never had the kind of Lag lots of people complained about when the Tier 1 carrier was Cogent. )

They would use the hamsters, which makes sense as to why the worlds are down. They had to take the hamsters off the wheel so they could burrow their way to us. They don't have burrowing drones yet, that's a hamster thing.

The only assumption to be made is that since the updates have stopped, and we are 1 hour and counting passed the last updated time, is that they do not know at this point when it will happen. Or, everyone went to grab lunch real quick.

I've noticed that when the maintenance folks (mechanics, IT people, etc.) are working on something, the first time you ask them if the repair or maintenance is done yet they are polite when they tell you not yet. The next time you ask them, they are a bit snappish with their reply, by the third or fourth time you ask them the answer is "F*** U, It will be ready when I tell you it's ready!!!" They also begin to work slower the more often you ask them if it's ready yet. This is from personal experience of having a supervisor telling me to go ask the mechanic is working blindly with one hand up to his shoulder underneath a machine to replace a broken gear.

Actually, the lag monster was roaming freely, but otherwise the game was just working fine afaikt. If they resolve the lag issues that seemed to have clogged their servers all is fine. If not, prepare for worlds opening the 1th (of march), not at 11 pm...

so i get this:
i can finaly log in, after having having to wait an extended maintenance period that wasn't anounced well in advance to begin with.
i get to play a shortquest when the following messages about the game stopping and finding a safe spot to log out pop up:
30 seconds
19 seconds
20 minutes (this time in red world chat)
9 seconds
16 seconds
all within a second or two of each other
then the game shuts down

with this kind of failure in timing and planing, it's no wonder Updates come out in such poor shape and require so many patches to function (assuming you call the current state of the game "functioning")
You're not even able to do a proper countdown?
If i would do my job in this poor fashion i would be kicked out years ago.

In the grander scheme of things it is no biggie if you didn't find a safe place to log out. In the old MUD words that could be an issue - and could really be an issue if you had died. For those unfamiliar with MUDs - you die someplace in the world - then you had to go back to your corpse and loot the gear from your corpse. If you failed to loot then after corpse rot ( a pre determined time when your corpse (read storage device housing all your gear) would cease to exist and your personal effects would hit the ground for anyone to loot. -- THAT S*cks!!

You die in DDO - no loss of exp, no loss of gear no loss of anything really....go back to your quest go back to your grind.

For most of us as power players (if you will) all we are losing by their down time is grind time.....do you really miss the grind time that much?

They are trying to get some Cannith Artificer to build up a small adamantine steam hamster force, but so far they could not resolve the problem of where to find a competent artificer.
