In the Ballroom portion, I am totally lost on the optionals (except the private rooms upstairs). I must be the dumbest player around because I could not even understand the other chat discussions of how to do them, or even where to find them. Where, for example, is the viceregal office? Thanks.

When you get to the desk with the 6 stat runes there's a huge door to your right - Once through that there's another smaller door again to your right.

To get to the Viceregal Office and other optionals you have to first make it to the Ballroom and speak to the NPCs.
Then you can go back through the Illusionarium to get to them.

To avoid the Spikes on your way back use the side entrance in the lobby by where you sign your name in the book.

The viceregal's office is in the chapterhouse. To get there, to through the illusionarium (where you fought the giant) and enter the chapterhouse. Once inside the chapterhouse, stick to the right wall, you should get a room with paintings displayed in it. the door to the viceregals' office is in there.

To open the office door, you need the key from one of the chests at the end, where you protect the viceregal. After that, it's better to go back through the 'front' of the illusionarium, by going through the door in the lobby, where the guards are, than trying to to back through the display hall (the door where you came into the party area). This way, you don't have to fight the illusionary guards in the display hall.

Lots of useful info in here: http://ddowiki.com/page/Partycrashers in case you hadn't already checked.

It lists the skills/gear needed to spot teh tieflings in the ballroom. And has a map.

ddowiki.com is the best source of info about this game IMHO (apart from other players/guild in-game). Consider bookmarking it if you already haven't.

Just my 2 cents.

You are not dumb, you are just trying to play the game without the wiki.

A lot of content in DDO is solved the first time by trial and error, it tends to be hard to find the logic behind it (well, sometimes there isn't).

You have two options: (i) spend an hour trying every possible option, or (ii) read the wiki.

Agreed. I mentionned the wiki as an alternative to coming to the forums for help.
I always run new content solo and without checking the wiki for the experience, and I don't play on Lammania for the same.
But there are times when you get stuck or can't find an optionnal and that is when wiki comes in handy (apart from build creation, gear, etc.).

Aye this is the right spot to look at ...

What you mostly need to avoid final fight is do 3 optionals:

First the upstairs room: need to pick the lock, high bluff (think 31) will help you bypass at first the big boss and reach the restroom, in the end you'll have to kill it but is better to bluff it (also some XPs) to kill it alone and kill the tieflings in little groups, much safer than starting a slay-living + comet-fall fest that might end up very bad for you.

Second the brainwasher/illusionist is the guy in the south talking to a big group of guards: here you can get two optionals, with high diplo you can make the guards leave without harming them (you can also use bluff but if you do that you'll get no XPs and will have to fight against them in the library), with high bluff (think 36) you can make the illusionist go to the library and kill it there, for all this you'll need either truesight or high wisdom/spot and waste some time round him to detect the disguise.

Third the poisoner/servant: one of the servants is a disguised tiefling that drops poison over the drinks, have to do the same than with the illusionist although this girl requires a less high bluff roll (think 31), come come to the library and HACK!

Bluff rolls are for EE, lower on easier diffs.

After doing those 3 optionals you'll only see some cinematics on the end of quest, all after a looooong relaxing walk of Cyan :D

I'll just share my expertise of the Partycrashers quest...

The Viceregal Office Key can be received from the Dwarf, Drake Aramon, who asks you to retrieve Natt Gann's Urn from the Viceregal Office.

The Jeweled Private Room Key can be found inside the Viceregal Office, next to the Urn, if you don't have anyone who can pick locks. The Private Rooms are filled with Tieflings out to fight, you can either provoke the guard who seems to be just standing there by running past him, or say that you need to use the restroom and use the conveniently-located secret doors to exterminate the rooms of Tieflings one by one.

The Contraband Vault Key (The door inside the Viceregal Office that you can't seem to unlock initially) can be found while looting the Chest at the end in Viceroy's Chamber after finishing the main objective, be warned that the statue just beyond the unlocked door will release an Abishai which will fight you after its escape, this fight can be rather difficult, so keep your guard up.

There are other optionals, such as helping Thaddeus Hitchstone's with his claims that someone is out to kill him (And he's actually right), if you can get a general idea of where and what scene the Backdrops represent, you can solve it with relative ease and time, just watch your step when you pull the lever for the final time.

Salva d'Phiarlan asks you to replace the illusory sculpture for him because the Viceroy said that "It wasn't big enough." The crystal for the said sculpture can be found just beyond the gateway where 6 Runes sit before it. The crystal is behind the sculpture.

Malior d'Phiarlan is a Tiefling cleverly disguised as an Elven guest, and has charmed all the guards at his service, you can use Diplomacy to get the guards to go back to their posts, or if you've seen through his disguise and lured him into the Library, you can kill him first while ignoring the guards so they all live and Malior (Now Dariel) is dead.

One of the drink servers wandering the Party Hall is actually secretly serving poison, if you're keen enough to Spot her pour poison into the drinks, or can see through her disguise, you can lure her into the Library as well and kill her.

If you kill the Tieflings in the Private Rooms, Malior (Dariel), and the drink server (Migris), Lokael, who appears at the end, will be so distraught by the fact all his plans were ruined and he was too much of a n00b to think up a backup to the backup for his backup plan that he'll unknowingly drink poison and die, the other optionals do not have an effect on the status of this boss fight.
