ALL HANDS ON DECK! We hereby invite the DDO community, throughout the world, and from ALL SERVERS of Eberron proper to our Veterans Day Ceremony this year.

DATE: Tuesday, November 11, 2014.

TIME: 3PM and 9PM EASTERN ---> Click to convert the time into YOUR TIMEZONE - First Event (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=2014+Veterans+Day+Event+1&iso=20141111T15&p1=179&ah=1) Second Event (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=2014+Veterans+Day+Event+2&iso=20141111T21&p1=179&ah=1)

WHERE: Ghallanda House Deneith's Temple of the Sovereign Host

A few things have remained a constant here in DDO since 2005. The worldwide community of gamers, daytime and nightly D&D adventuring, the camaraderie of young and old, and a commitment to welcome the armed forces community, family, friends into the fold. Turbine may have created this game, but its those of us that have taken this a step further... that come back to play in the world of Dungeons & Dragons time and time again,to share a camaraderie thats more than skin deep, that continue to make DDO a special place.

The Tyrs Paladium guild, a guild filled with many proud veterans from many nations, once again wishes to welcome all to join us to pay tribute to veterans, and their families from the United States, as well as those from nations around the world, who've risked life and limb to fight for human dignity and freedom. We gather solely to further our cause, of appreciation to those who put their lives on the line each and every day, to allow us to awake yet another day, to hug our families, our kids, our parents, and do whatever it is we want to do.

This is the longest running, most witnessed event in DDO history, thanks to all who've attended over the years. As long as there is a demand and DDO servers, we'll be there.

* If you do not already reside on Ghallanda, all you need to do is roll a fresh toon on Ghallanda... contact me privately for precise instruction if necessary.

This is for our brave soldiers, and their families. I hope to see some of you there!! /Salute

--------------------------***--------------------------

We highly recommend that you give a little bit of your time and resources to your local community's veteran's association/organization if you are able. Veterans and their families can benefit directly in various ways.

One of my favorite organizations I got involved with the past two years is:

http://i43.tinypic.com/15p5qpy.jpg

This year we'll be sending a video of our event oversees directly to US and ally troops, as well as to members of the National Veterans Wheelchair Games which is a sports and rehabilitation program for
military service veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems.

It's so nice that you do this every year. There's a parade song in mind as I read this, but I don't know the name of it. I will try to be there. :)

Our event this year is dedicated to this very special human being, who fought in World War II, who earned this Medal of Honor, yet didn't fire a single shot, wouldn't even carry his weapon... Thank you for showing nearly inhuman bravery Corporal Desmond Doss. We're going to tell his incredible story this November 11. Don't miss it!

We are going to pay tribute to CPL. Nathan Cirillo, who was cowardly shot while guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa. Since the terrorist attack in Canada that took his life, there's been such an outpouring of support. One particular showing really is worth detailing, an incredible statement of support by American and Canadian Hero, and 5 time Purple Heart recipient Major Sinke.

A great charity in the UK for blind Veterans.

http://i60.tinypic.com/33204eo.jpg

St Dunstan's, the world famous organization for blind servicemen, was founded in early 1915, "when few people thought it possible that a blind person could lead a happy and useful life." Its founder Sir Arthur Pearson, himself blind, was a remarkable man, and "although no one then realized it, the blind man's world would never be the same, after the formation of St Dunstan's" said lan Fraser, who was Pearson's second in command and had lost his sight on the Somme.

On Christmas Day 1915, The Illustrated London News informed its readers that, "in a corner of London's most beautiful park is a house where miracles are worked." It was to this house that soldiers and sailors were brought who had suffered the cruelest injury that war could inflict, they had been blinded. The house was in Regent's Park and it was St Dunstan's Hostel.

The world famous organization housed in the park issued a number of fund-raising picture postcards during the Great War. This post is to honor St Dunstan's work, and attempt to describe the establishment of St Dunstan's and its activities through the postcards it published during that time.

http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/Verse%20card%202%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt226x367o0%2 C0s226x367.jpg http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/verse%20card%201%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt207x341o0%2 C0s207x341.jpg http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/Verse%20card%203%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt234x360o0%2 C0s234x360.jpg

A Victoria Cross hero - Captain Angus Buchanan

One of the residents at St Dunstan's was Victoria Crossholder Captain Angus Buchanan, who received the decoration after he rescued "under heavy machine?gun fire" two wounded soldiers trapped in No?Man's Land.Buchanan was the only V.C. holder to be blinded in the Great War and St Dunstan'ssaluted him by issuing a postcard featuring this brave man.

http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/dun%2021%20%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt237x368o0%2C0s23 7x368.jpg

This card was the first in a set of three and was dedicated to Captain Angus Buchanan V.C., who studied braille and typewriting at St Dunstan's. He was a student at Oxford university when the war broke out and in 1919 went back there to study law. He became articled to a firm of solicitors in Gloucestershire. In 1942, he told Ian Frazer, "I am still very fit and have plenty to do." He died two years later.

As terrible and bloody battles raged on the Somme in thesummer and autumn of 1916, more battle?blinded soldiers came under the care ofSt Dunstan's. It was probably in the late summer of 1916 that the organizationissued a set of five postcards.

http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/St.Dunstans%20envelope.jpg.opt591x380o0%2C0s591x38 0.jpg

http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/dun%203%20%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt239x378o0%2C0s239 x378.jpg

"BLINDED FOR YOU" A splendid and moving picture by R.Caton Woodville, which brings to life the noise and confusion of battle and theunseen danger lying in wait for a blinded soldier. Woodville, a painter in oils and watercolors, traveled extensively, often reporting from the battle?front. For instance, he observed the Russo?Turkish War of 1878, the Egyptian War of1882, the Anglo/Boer War and the Great War. His illustrations regularly appeared in The Illustrated London News.

http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/dun%204%20%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt238x372o0%2C0s238 x372.jpg

"PALS." It seems the wholesale use of guide dogs forblind ex?servicemen did not begin until the early 1930s. Apparently, many ofthe men had been reluctant to use them, because of the pre?war image of the blind beggar and his dog. Perhaps this card was meant to change peoples opinion.

http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/dun%205%20%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt246x381o0%2C0s246 x381.jpg

"WHENNIGHT SETS IN THE SUN IS DOWN." This card Caton Woodville's hauntingpainting which depicted a blind soldier being led away in the aftermath ofbattle, while in the background shadowy figures tend to the dead and wounded. Amemorable picture.

http://www.worldwar1postcards.com/resources/dun%202%20%5B1600x1200%5D.jpg.opt243x386o0%2C0s243 x386.jpg

"YOU'VE NOT SAID HOW I'VE GROWED, DADDY!" This was Thomas Henry's impression of a blinded officer returning to his family. The text on the reverse of the card reads, "The ever increasing difficulties experienced by the blind women employees of the National Institute for the Blind in finding suitable lodgings for themselves has led the Council to provide a Hostel for their use at 38 and 40 Langham Street,W."

In 1961, lan Fraser said, "Men whose sight had been damaged in the early days of the [1914-18) war, who had left hospital then with an adequate amount of vision, and when sight had since deteriorated to the point of blindness, would eventually nearly double our numbers.

"Up to the present - and the list is still not closed - we have had over 2,900 men who lost their sight through service in the First World War... Some good comes out of evil, and even war itself has produced its highlights of human conduct. Britain, and indeed the whole world, is the better for the existence of St Dunstan's, and its message will go on."

Sir Arthur Pearson, who died 1921, would have been pleased to know that the idea which inspired "The House of Miracles" is still alive and active today.

Jeopardy
Question:

On Jeopardy the other night, the final question was

"How many steps does the guard take during his
walk across the tomb of the Unknowns?"
All three contestants missed it!

This is really an awesome sight to watch if you've never had the chance .
Fascinating. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

1.
How many steps does the guard take during his
walk across the tomb of the Unknowns
and why?

21
steps:
It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute which
is the highest honor given any military or foreign
dignitary.

2.
How long does he hesitate after his about face
to begin his return
walk and why?

21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1

3.
Why are his gloves wet?

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his
grip on the rifle.

4.
Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and, if not, why not?

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

5.
How often are the guards changed?

Guards
are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

6.
What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he
must be between 5' 10' and 6' 2' tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30.

They
must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb,
live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot
drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of
their lives. They cannot swear in public for the
rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the
uniform or the tomb in any way.

After
two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that
is worn on
their lapel signifying they
served as guard of the tomb. There are only
400 presently worn. The guard must obey
these rules for the rest of their
lives or
give up the wreath pin.

The
shoes are specially made with very thick soles
to keep the heat and cold from their feet.
There are metal heel plates that extend to
the top
of the shoe in order to make the loud click as
they come

to a halt.

There are no
wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards
dress for duty
in front of a full-length
mirror.

The first six months of duty a
guard cannot talk to anyone nor
watch TV.
All off duty time is spent studying the 175
notable people laid
to rest in
Arlington National Cemetery .
A guard must memorize who they are and where
they are interred. Among the notables are:

President Taft,
Joe Lewis {the boxer}
Medal of Honor winner Audie L. Murphy, the most
decorated soldier of WWII and of Hollywood fame.
Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty..
ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

In
2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was
approaching Washington ,
DC , our
US Senate/House took 2 days
off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC
evening news, it was reported that because of
the dangers from the
hurricane, the military
members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb
of
the Unknown Soldier were given permission
to suspend the assignment. They

respectfully declined the offer, "No way,
Sir!" Soaked to the skin,
marching in the
pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that
guarding
the Tomb was not just an assignment,

it was the highest honor that can be
afforded
to a service person. The tomb has been patrolled
continuously,
24/7, since 1930.

Id like to review the simple process of copying in DDO and pasting links in your browser. Some have had trouble in tributes past, so I'd like to clear up all doubts.

1. Highlight the link by holding down the left button of your mouse and dragging across the link. Press CTRL C.

2. Open your browser and click where you normally type your web address. Press CTRL V.

3. Some of the videos are processed in HD. Depending on your PC however, you may only be able to handle standard definition, while DDO is open. On the bottom right of the video, you have options to play in 320p up to 1080p HD. You can go full screen, but I only advise those will really good PCs and high speed internet speed to try that! :)

Tonight we'll be paying tribute to a Canadian hero, and a retired American Marine that risked his life to pay his respects in the best way he knew how. A heartfelt tribute we'd like to share with the DDO community.

There is a wide cultural gap between those who have no relationship with the Armed Forces and those who've served their country. Closing that gap is as necessary as it is long overdue. That is the main reason I participate in these events each year, and why we'll keep doing them.

Whether it's a simple conversation with a veteran or their family member or volunteering, get involved. Figure out what you do best and offer that skill. If you're a mental health professional, donate your services to Give an Hour (http://www.giveanhour.org/), which connects counselors to service members, veterans and their families.

Reach out to? TAPS (http://www.taps.org/), Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which connects family members who have lost service members and veterans in similar ways. For instance, if someone's brother died of an IED attack in Iraq, TAPS links that person with a peer who has lost a sibling in Iraq.

The National Military Family Association (http://www.militaryfamily.org/get-involved/) and Blue Star Families (https://www.bluestarfam.org/) also connects military families with leaders in the civilian community.

"The Uncounted" highlighted an innovative New York clinic (http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/11/us/va-mental-healthcare-clinic/index.html) that broke from the traditional approach by linking the VA and a private hospital system so both could operate in a single shared office space. Patients, including one Iraq veteran and his wife, credit the clinic for saving their marriage.

The RAND Corporation (http://www.rand.org/topics/military-families.html) has recently secured funding for a yearlong study of the clinic's efficacy to see if the program should be replicated across the country, said senior adviser to the project Terri Tanielian, whose career has been focused on veterans issues.

An overwhelming number of nonprofits and community groups have popped up over the past decade, making it harder to find a good one, she and others say. Tanielian recommended Welcome Back Veterans (http://web.welcomebackveterans.org/index), which is intended to help people in the community link to veterans.

The effort spans the country (http://web.welcomebackveterans.org/about/index), and is based at medical and academic institutions in Boston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Durham, North Carolina. Read an in-depth analysis of the program (http://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR719.html).

With 22 US Veteran suicides a DAY, One every 65 MINUTES, it is NEVER too late. This is a toll that has surpassed the number of soldiers killed in combat. And the above organizations really can help before its TOO LATE. This is something you can do... today, or tomorrow. A family you will most likely never meet might be eternally grateful you did.

[I had to break up my post into 5 posts since only one video is allowed per post. I think it makes for easier reading anyway...]

Hello and welcome all to our Veterans Day Ceremony!

This is also known as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, and we sincerely thank our international brothers & sisters to stand with us here today.

I am in the Tyrs Paladium guild here on Ghallanda. I will be the MC for today's ceremony. Thank you all for taking a bit of time away from questing to be here today.

As we begin, I'd like to start with a poem. Its a simple, but powerful and memorable poem. We in Tyrs Paladium have used it in every ceremony we've ever done.

"It is the Soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us Freedom of the Press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us Freedom of Speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the Freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial;

And it is the Soldier--who salutes the flag,
Who serves the flag, and

Whose coffin is draped by the flag--
Who allows the protester to burn the flag."

-------------------- *** -------------------

The videos can be viewed FULL SCREEN, in 72Op or 1080p HD. If you've got the computer for it, try it! Videos marked CUSTOM VIDEO PRESENTATION were produced by me (audio, video, transitions) for viewing at our event, and afterwards by our community, and especially for our Veterans, wherever in the World they may be.

The Tyrs Paladium Guild, along with the Dungeons & Dragons Online gaming community pays its respects to the man who would not carry a gun, yet braved near in-human conditions to save 75 men within hours during one battle alone, in World War II. CPL. Desmond T. Doss. An incredible story worth telling, and definitely worth knowing... I provide the intro narration....

Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae is popularly believed to have written Flanders Field on 3 May 1915, after he witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, 22 years old, the day before. The poem was first published on 8 December of that year in the London-based magazine Punch.

Please remember this week all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for you. Keep the torch of our freedom burning brightly. Keep faith with those who died yester-year and with those who will die today and tomorrow. Teach your children well the importance of Veteran's Day.

Thank you all for spending time with Tyrs Paladium, the brave men and women of the armed forces past and present, and most importantly in honor of those who could not be here.

Thus concludes our ceremony.
