View Full Version : "As the mind tears, the souls bleeds"

It came to my attention that I didn't know a lot about the storyline for many quests, due to skipping dialogue and zerging :)

So I had a little project this life, which was to read every single dialogue (in and out of quests), read all the Compendium descriptions for quests, talk to all NPC's available, etc.

That's when I saw the line in the title. It is uttered by one of the beholders in the quest Prison of the Mind (I know it's called the Prisoner, but it will forever be Prison of the Mind to me). Now it has become one of my favorite lines in the game! "As the mind tears, the soul bleeds", you gotta love Xoriat.

Do you remeber any funny/interesting/creepy/crazy lines from DDO?

PS: I also found quite a few crazy NPCs around Stormreach. One of them keeps saying (Bantam Chirrakas, in House D):

"One is the number of the Chosen One! Two are the enemies, light and darkness! Three are the names of his dark servants!"

I wonder what he is talking about?

There is a site that ties the storylines together with their own backstory fill, and it is an enjoyable read. Trouble is, I seem to have misplaced the link... :(

I think i know which ones you mean. One tells the story of Eberron (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/319677-The-Story-of-Eberron) and the other is a Timeline (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/366627-DDO-Story-Arc-Timeline?highlight=sir+lawrence) connecting all the packs together.

These two links are great, and the people who made them are even greater!

But there are little nuances that you can only catch be reading all the stuff the NPCs and monsters say :)

I always enjoy the storyline of VoN. I like the idea of gathering a band of master-criminals to break into an extra-planar vault. Definitely the high water mark of DDO. Creative and well written with some excellent quests.

All of the narration in Siegebreaker is completely insane!

"But where are the bodies? Did they... eat them??"

I like the Xoriat quest NPC comments a lot.

Broccoli... why must it always be broccoli...

This game is chalk full of little gems for those who take the moments to notice & enjoy them... A few of my favorites:

• Failing to kill enough in Framework results in Dorris "muttering about too much noise, and not enough violence..." as well as the narration of the various optional kill marks like "Don't stop killing Minotaurs now!" and "Now finish what you started..."

• The Beholder vs Medusa staring contest in Lord of Eyes where they're telling each other "You blink!" "No, you blink!"

• The corpses from Gauntlet in the Shroud.

• The series of doors/gates/barriers in Made to Order that's so reminiscent of "Get Smart."

• Siegebreaker gets a double mention for "Brinky & the Pain" as well as "But where are the bodies? Did they... Eat them?!"

• The quest Missing in Action having a quest-giver named Braddock.

• And of course the classic Korthos giggidy "We beat them off! ... This time"

To paraphrase the great Ferris Bueller: "The game moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss something." ;)

"It's red! Too red! Put it back!" -one of the Xoriat cultists in Dreams of Insanity

"Toss my corpse to Xoriat..." -Invaders cultists

(Say): Sor'jek Incanni says, ''The worms return to feast on my bones... again...''

(Dungeon Master): Cinnis' roar shakes the tower, 'My flame burns no more!'
Every time I break that crystal, I get shivers. Silly, but that line is just delivered perfectly.

I still quite like the old DnD cartoon homage in Fear Factory.

For those who don't know, if you explore a bit you'll find the corpse of an Acrobat and the undead forms of the Barbarian, the Cavalier, the Magician and the Ranger. (Presumably the Thief managed to get away).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_(TV_series)

(I still have a boxed set of that on DvD somewhere, the episodes seem shorter than I remember from when I was a kid).

I think one of the Kobolds in the STK-chain keeps saying "Hobgob food is made of Kobold!"

There's loads i enjoy, but the one that immediately springs to mind is Grulemith when he introduces you to his trial, you're something along the lines of "and if i complete this, you'll give me the orb?" & he's all "no! what are you, stupid or something?" :)

And pretty much all of Amskar's journals in the Stormhorns where he sounds progressively more annoyed at his underlings' incompetence & you get the impression he's just going to have to roll up his sleeves & do it all himself.

What's always bugged me is trying to decide whether Annelisa Hdar in Keeper's Sanctuary is the same Annelisa in Bounty Hunter. They admittedly use the same name and character model, but that could always be cost-cutting programming. As a reminder, she was the NPC that was "imprisoned" in the Bounty Hunter quest who you have the option of saving or killing. The main bad in that quest was Drog Blackhand. You next see this character (or just model) in Keeper's Sanctuary. There she is some random mini-boss up to no good in a quest filled with undead shenanigans. Near where you kill her is a message to that character from the Black Abbot.

My Dearest A -
You have outdone yourself, yet again. Blackhand proved a most capable servant to our cause and I shall not forget your service. Those self-righteous fools dare strike out against us. I can only laugh at their pathetic attempts at my destruction. The witch-hunter now knows the truth of the matter: all who oppose our cause must die, and in death join my legions. My servants gather and my power grows as the Dead Time draws near.
Shadow draws a veil across the land. My rise to ascension begins. May you fare well in the storm to come.
The Black Abbott

Sooo....after reading that note, seeing its the same name and character model, would you kill Annelisa in the Bounty Hunter or choose to let her go?

Keep in mind, this is total plot meta-gaming. In the Bounty Hunter she presents herself as a damsel in distress in Bounty Hunter, telling you that the villains there have basically "had their way with her" and giving you text options that basically say, "Fear not damsel in distress, I am a paladin you are free to go" vs the more lascivious "Hey, sounds like they had a good thing going, so gimme some sugar baby." There is no text option for "Hey, you really don't look like you were tied up. Was that guy I just killed actually protecting you? Were you secretly sent her by the Black Abbot to recruit these scoundrels and after I fought my way in here are exploiting my adventurer trope of rescuing damsels so that you can sneak away to Delera's Graveyard and help with vile undead rituals? Or are you like a totally different person who just looks the same because some programmer re-used some sprites.

It would explain why, in Bounty Hunter, you get the XP reward for killing her but not for letting her go.

I use this one quite regularly:
"This is why we can't have nice things" - Yaulthoon, In the Flesh

The halfling from Dream Conspiracy... "PEANUT BUTTER!!"

Many more that I'm too tired to think of. But these are what makes HTRing fun for me.

Korthos also has "even at rest it is a truly awesome beast" which always makes me chuckle.

Oh dear... I love you now. I'm big fan of ddo storyline... Welcome to my world mate.

My favorite would be "Amarath" eternal war between celestials and demons. Have you seen archon city? it's so cool... I would pay something similar to that pack. From what I know, demon king of nine hells made a contract with angels to assist him in battle, to defeat demonic army... however, both were so powerful that they ripped the dimention.. gotta love that story.

Fear factory has:

Undead Barbarian - Optional named zombie
Undead Cavalier - Optional named zombie
Undead Magician - Optional named zombie
Undead Ranger - Optional named zombie
...and you find the corpse of a thief acrobat.

Those just happen to be the same classes played in the D&D cartoon. First time I played this quest I was waiting for a lost baby unicorn to pop out....
