Hello. I'm looking for a paladin tank build to duo with an archer friend. It will be a first-life 32 pt build that needs to be viable to level 28. It does not have to be pure paladin, I have all the other classes unlocked. It can be any race except WF or BF (I don't want a construct).

I understand update 23 will radically change just about everything I'm looking for, so this may be a very short-lived build.

I strongly suggest keeping ur pally pure because of the sacred defender capstone. It heals u 250 points when u go unconscious but not dead, affected by heal amp. A human or pdk pally can fairly easily obtain an unconsciousness range of -85. I know of one who has it at -125. A pally can also easily obtain well over 100-200% heal amp.

A pally can also get very high prr (and mrr) and the highest saves of all classes. Meaning u will always take half damage from the nasty aoe's and a fraction of nasties like disintigrate, and around half or 40% less physical damage. (Even less with update 23). When u go under 0 HP u will geat healed by at least 500, probably more like 750 dependi g on heal amp. Basicly u will be near immortal unless enemies get a lucky shot in. (A mob hitting for 200 will deal 120 damage (not taking into account ur DR which will be good)). So u will have to be at 35 HP or less to get killed by a mob hitting for 200. This is at epic level by which u can have 1800 HP at least.

OP? Yes. And they decided to beef up the ol' pally by a lot with update 23. Don't fear ur build will not last long, basicly prr will reduce more damage when the update goes live and they will add mrr as well (same as prr but for spell damage).

I cannot (or will not, rather) go into details how to build it, but dont worry its pretty straightforward when going pure. This because i dont play pallies myself but a RL friend of mine has an excellent pally on which im basing this.

The goal is to make an aggro magnet that can deal significant damage as well. I like the new shield enhancement tree and I plan to use the shield charge to chase down my archer buddy when he has a mob on him and is running around like Ricky Bobby on fire.

If you see any glaring holes in the build, or even minor tweaks to improve the effectiveness, please let me know.

Hey, didn't realize the builder was already updated! :) Been waiting since U20 for this...

A few general comments: normally I dump DEX & WIS on pallies unless I need to meet feat pre-reqs (e.g., Dodge, TWF chain); the THF chain is backloaded, meaning GTHF provides the biggest DPS boost, which means I think you should take all or none; you should definitely max out Intim on any tank build (I would max Intim / UMD / Concentration; if you take a +2 INT tome, put extra pts into Balance).

For 32-pt I would start CON 16.

B/c of feat shortage, I skipped b.sword & THF chain; this build uses rapiers & heavy picks instead. But it could be built for any 1H weapon by swapping Improved Crit feat. [Mornh is a good option.] If you still want to go for GTHF + b.sword (or d.axe), drop Blinding Speed, Bulwark of Defense, Shield Deflection, and Imp Shield Bash to take them instead; and swap IC:Pierce for IC:Slash.

Still trying to work out the sweet spot for enhs, but the goal is 41 APs into Vanguard for T5s and capstone, at least 13 APs into SD for defensive stance and +20% HPs, and at least 8 APs into KotC for Div Might & Exalted Cleave. You can see I put 3 APs into human for Dmg Boost & 10% heal amp; 25 APs into SD for +6 STR and Swift Defense (+10% movement speed); and a few more APs into KotC for better DM & EC.

The builder is updated, but there is a code error in the SD tree that you need to fix before you can assign the points fully.

So, you think the vanguard capstone is better than the SD capstone for a tank? The other poster suggested it was the ultimate for survivability.

And I do plan to stay with dwarven axe or b.sword for the flavor.

Other poster was talking pre-U23. Vanguard capstone provides "While shield is equipped: +2 attack, +2 damage, +5% doublestrike, +1(W), and shield bash stuns 5% of the time DC(10 + 1/2 Character lvl + strength modifier + stun bonus)." That's a pretty decent boost to DPS.

You may wish to consider khopeshes instead of b.sword / d.axe; you lose glancing blows, but khopesh is 15-20 x4 crits (w/Holy Sword + IC:Slash), while b.sword is 15-20 x3 and d.axe is 17-20 x4 (or 17-18 x4 19-20 x5 w/Headman's Chop). Although the other advantage to b.swords is there are a couple of decent named epic options, namely Nightmare (http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Nightmare,_the_Fallen_Moon) and EE First Blood (http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:First_Blood_%28Level_27%29) (+15% is highest Enhancement bonus to doublestrike, AFAIK).

You could take Vanguard capstone + Glorious Stand, but that costs 72 APs total, which doesn't leave enough for KotC + human trees. I wish Turbine had put Exalted Cleave into T1 KotC; as-is you have to spend 4 APs on filler to unlock T2. :(

Between Sealed Life and Eternal Defender, you are basically unkillable. You don't die until you hit -70 HP, and between that and 0, you automatically heal; with max CHA, your saves will be insanely high, and Sacred Defense gives you so much PRR/MRR that you take drastically reduced damage. Add in some DR, and only bosses will do more than scratch you.

KotC gives you enough punch through heroic levels, and the relevant EDs should pick up the slack in epics.


End game and fully geared out, a STR build will be preferable, but on the way there...
