View Full Version : Future Development: Mirror of Glamering Preview!
Cordovan

Lamannia is now offering a sneak peek of a future development using the Mirror of Glamering! We've made an adjustment that now allows players to use the Mirror of Glamering on weapons and shields!
Please note that this feature is an expansion upon the version of the Mirror of Glamering currently set to be released with Update 23. Currently, the Mirror of Glamering is only confirmed to be able to be used to create a cosmetic version of armor and helmets when Update 23 is released. However, we are also working to allow players to create weapon and shield cosmetics, and are putting this preview on Lamannia now for you to take a look at, and provide us with feedback!
NOTES:
- The weapon cosmetic will only display on your character when you are wielding a weapon with the same combat style. The current combat styles are one-handed, two-handed, quarterstaff, great axe, crossbow, repeating crossbow, bow, rune arm, orb, and shield-only. Handwraps, and thrown weapons are not able to be made into cosmetics.
- Particle effects on weapons or shields (like flames) do not transfer to the cosmetic weapon or shield.
- You can get a Mirror of Glamering from the DDO Store on Lamannia (speak to Lord Poincelot for free Lamannia Turbine Points if necessary!) Additionally, Cordovan will be online from 5:00 - 6:00 PM Eastern (-4 GMT) today (Tuesday, September 2nd) to distribute Mirrors of Glamering in the Test Dojo. Have fun!
- This additional feature is not yet in a complete state, so expect to see some bugs and order-of-operation issues. Thanks!

Excellent! Vary excited about this addition! Two questions:
• I'm assuming that the Weapon & Shield aspects won't be part of the U23 release - if that is true, will already purchased Mirrors retroactively gain this functionality when the +W&S version hits live? Ofc, if I'm wrong and the plan is to have it all in place for U23 then nvm & so much the better!
• A little bummed about the particle effects, as those are a big part of what I like about the Bloody Hooked Blade. Any chance that's just temporary and y'all are working on the cosmetic retaining that?

Any Mirrors purchased when Update 23 comes out will work with cosmetic weapons and shields whenever that functionality is enabled. If we can get this done for Update 23 we'd love to, but we'd rather get the Mirror out for Armor, Helmets, and Goggles and then add in Weapons and Shields in a later update if necessary. We're not yet ready to talk more about particle effects, but we are investigating various possibilities.

Well, there's the answer to the horrible design of some of the thunderforged stuff. So basically, the item we're copying has to be the same type as the one we're using? So if I like the design of say the blade of fury, I use the mirror and make the silly thunderforged greatsword look a little cooler. Sweet. Look forward to that implementation. So are you guys now adding several more slots (instead of just two) so we can also fit hand slots with cosmetics or will those 2 be it?

Please investigate the option to allow us to choose whether to keep the particle effects or not as well. I'm not a fan of most particle effects and would rather have a choice about them.

I just want to say that this is brilliant addition to the game. While many players won't have any interest in it, others will, and it should be a healthy source of revenue.
Coming next: Cosmetic mounts for in town.

Very nice, even without particle effects there are some very nice basic weapon & shield skins in the game :)
Weapon animation set is fair enough & makes sense for engine reasons, but am I right in guessing weight class on shield won't be an issue, so my swashbuckler can have a Death's Door skin on his buckler?

So absolutely awesome this is getting implemented. I'd also pay for sprite cosmetics for weapons as a new slot, kind of like how path of exile does it.

When you say particle effects don't carry over, does that mean they you get the effects from the wielded weapon instead of the mirrored one, or you get no effects at all?
Do all coloring effects count as particle effects, or just cloudy ones, like Holy? (trying to decide if the mirror is just changing the shape or also color effects, like anarchic)

THANK GOODNESS. Because the Thunderforged Staff looks like a toilet plunger.
- Particle effects on weapons or shields (like flames) do not transfer to the cosmetic weapon or shield.
Does this mean "if you use the mirror on an item with a particle effect, it doesn't show on the cosmetic you make" or "the particle effect on your currently equipped weapon won't appear on the cosmetic"?

So no.. you could have a sword of shadows skin on a maul or a scimmy graphic on a light pick since theyre both generic 2-handed & 1-handed, but a repeater would have to be another repeater

When you say particle effects don't carry over, does that mean they you get the effects from the wielded weapon instead of the mirrored one, or you get no effects at all?
If your cosmetic is overriding your normal weapon then no particle effects should show at all. They don't somehow bleed through from the wielded weapon around the new cosmetic look.
As an example of how this works:
You use the Mirror of Glamering to copy the look of a long sword with a shadowy aura. You equip the cosmetic in the weapon cosmetic slot.
~ If you are holding a one handed weapon it looks like the long sword cosmetic with no aura or particle effects.
~ If you are holding a two handed weapon or a ranged weapon the cosmetic has no effect and does not change the appearance.

We're not yet ready to talk more about particle effects, but we are investigating various possibilities.
Hopefully we can use the cosmetics to get rid of the stink clouds effect on the thunderforged weapons. Those weapon models look great, but the effect looks terrible!
Anyway, glad you're finally making these! Hoping they stay accessible with reasonable prices, or random drops.

First off I would really like to thank you for doing this it has been my(and possibly many others) desire to have more character customization and believe me when this is finished I will be throwing money at you hand over foot :D. Now I'm not sure if it was said some where(yes I did scan the post) but could we please unbind goggle's and helms i.e. make them a separate from each other so I can wear my glowy eyes with helms. Thank you and keep up the amazing work.
Glad to see the expanded functionality. Glad to see you guys making a cosmetic with such a general usage (and I imagine it will help you guys rake in more cash; I plan on buying at least a few!) This is the good kind of store stuff that I like to see (in addition to content packs of course).

Since the dev team is working on cosmetics, could you also look into fixing the cosmetic display toggle getting reset to 'display helm & googles' everytime on login?
I'll try to explain it better with an example. Say, I have the bunny hat equipped, and I don't like to display it on my toon. So I toggle to 'turn off googles & helm' on login. But after I log off, and login again, it automatically gets reset to 'show googles & helm' toggle. Its not a big deal, but a tad annoying having to hide it on each login. It should ideally stick to whatever display option is selected during character log off.

Nice, does that mean we get a second ragdoll just to put our cosmetics on?
(And possibly a third to put the particle effects on?)
And does this mean I have to own an item to take it's look or can I steal the look from some in game "player/npc/foe" as well?

Does this mean we'll get cosmetic slots for both separate hands? (Used for weapon1, weapon1+shield, or weapon1+weapon2)I noticed that two weapon fighting isn't currently a cosmetically supported combat style. I'm hoping Cord's use of the word "current" indicates they're working on it - my guess/hope is that rather than dedicated "Weapon Cosmetic" and "Shield Cosmetic" slots it'll become "Main Hand" and "Off Hand" slots to facilitate TWF.
Hopefully we can use the cosmetics to get rid of the stink clouds effect on the thunderforged weapons. Those weapon models look great, but the effect looks terrible!lol Our hopes are at odds here. With Weapon Cosmetics currently not retaining particle effects, if you Mirror your TF weapon you'll get the look without the cloud. Personally, I'm hoping they fix it to retain particle effects because it's part of what I want from skinning the Bloody Hooked Blade. Ideally the effects will have an on/off toggle - but that might be stretching hopes a bit ;)

i love the idea i realy do, i was waiting long time to hide shield with some other look, but one thing bothers me about it.
if we get a single weapon cosmetic that means it will make everything in hand that falls under that category look like that ONE weapon.... single hand weapon description fits to awful lot of weapons.
so maybe it would be better to add a cosmetic slot to every weapon and shield in game? like in description right on top near the item name, so we can add cosmetic loot to one particular weapon or shield and not everything we hold in hand?
well i dread the moment of seeing the cosmetic weapon in hand and swinging wrong weapon becouse the weapon didint switch due to lag.........., and not all weapons i would like to cover up, just some ugly ones, maybe also there should be weapon type limit so hammers still look like hammers, swords like swords, axes like axes........ just a thought.

Here's an idea. Let there be a way of making that into a cosmetic as well. Like a particle effect for main and off hand. Add that to the armor and helmet slot too and sell particle effects. Kinda like you have them for pets. You'll sell a bunch for sure. Black flames for your main hand? Green sparks? Why not.
This has always been a great way for Turbine to make money, just look at how many that run around with glowing eyes. People like to be able to pimp themselves out.

Actually, on rereading that... Why is Great Axe mentioned specifically? Is there a functional difference between it and Great Swords/Clubs & Mauls for cosmetics - like we can't use a Great Sword or Maul skin for an equipped Great Axe? If not, then "two-handed" should suffice for that animation style.

I could be wrong, but I believe the grip/hand placement is different than other two-handers. For a greatsword/club/falchion you got both hands close to the handle, but the greataxe the hands are more spread apart to compensate the weight distribution. Holding the axe like a bat would look kinda silly.
Although by that logic Mauls would also be different if I'm not mistaken. So I'm not sure...

I'ts probably not the hand placement that's the issue. It's more likely the animations STHF vs FTHF, my guess is that something would brake the animations.

Good call on the hand placement - I had over looked that... So my guess then would be that GAxe & Maul should be interchangeable as well as GSword & GClub. Gonna have to hit Lama later and check that part out if nobody posts about it first.

true, but my problem with it is that when it will be so flexible, and some will like it, others wont like it and will have to remove cosmetic from slot along with changeing weapon, every time they want hammer to look like hammer and not like sword (as example)
thats why i think adding cosmetic slots to weapons and shields, would make each cosmetic to apply to certian item and not to everything held.
hey it could even be done as additional optional way to do it, so you could do either, inventory way to everything held or weapon/shieldd slot for only certain item to have it......

Will it actually be one time use?
Or will it be exploitable to create limitless cosmetic items.
This is a question you should be asking yourselves at Turbine. We all know you know about the exploitation. show us you've created new shiny that is not exploitable.

Would it be possible to use this Mirror of Glamering on some armor that had the old type of the cosmetic armor design placed on them? The ones that were a one time application to one armor only.
Cause there are some great designs from them that were omitted when the Glamered cosmetic armor designs came out.

if that set where available as a kit nobody would wear anything else

And just a silly as not allowing my repeating SOS
From what the devs have said the only reason certain weapons can't be cosmetic'd into a different one is due to animation issues (ie. Q-staff > Greatsword) not because it's "silly"
Seriously though if you don't like it, don't use it but don't try to impose those limits on other people

It was a joke Failed no worry so don't want to limit anyone.
Thought it is silly. I don't think there is any animation issues if a wolf form Druid can run around with a sword & shield magically floating in air.

The store wasn't working for me during the first couple Lama builds, but was suddenly available during the 3rd build. Ofc, I tried out the mirror and was really pleased with it. Nice, easy functionality and something everyone has wanted for a long time. I didn't get to try it out on a weapon which is too bad because there are a few in-game that I don't care for. I agree with those that asked that it be optional to have the cosmetic design with the actual weapon's particle effect.
I know that the price is subject to change when it goes live. I would suggest that you keep it around where it is now on Lamannia. I think that you'll do a much more brisk business. At the very least, if you do decide to raise the price for the armor version, I would have a completely different and much cheaper version for weapons. I might be willing to shell out to change an armor that I wear quite a bit, but I would never dump a bunch of TP to modify a weapon's look.
Finally, I did want to offer my second to Theender's motion:
Would it be possible to use this Mirror of Glamering on some armor that had the old type of the cosmetic armor design placed on them? The ones that were a one time application to one armor only.
Cause there are some great designs from them that were omitted when the Glamered cosmetic armor designs came out.

Now I'm not sure if it was said some where(yes I did scan the post) but could we please unbind goggle's and helms i.e. make them a separate from each other so I can wear my glowy eyes with helms.
It just lets us spend more money, i.e. I'd love to wear the cosmetic winged helm and have glowing eyes, but I can't have both currently.
Also, Mirror of Glamering = best update in DDO in years. Others have said it and I can't say it enough.

I found one very good reason to make it so that you could Glamer (Glamor?) a 2 Handed Weapon and use it for a Single Weapon Fighting (which would/should work, styles are very similar)...
Moonhowl Axe/Mad lute for Bards. You make 2 awesome graphics (both the same) that would be even more awesome on Bards, then make a tree that actually makes bards pretty awesome, make an item that would 'technically' allow them to use both (the mirror), but then add on a stipulation that breaks the whole thing down =( Because you cannot wield a 2-H weapon and swashbuckle, cannot use the graphic without wielding a 2-H, and bards aren't really that good unless they are swashbucklers... lol
Guess have to prioritize whether it is better to look awesome, or to BE awesome... a choice other classes don't have to bear =/
EDIT: By saying the styles are similar, I didn't mean the effects, but the actual sequences of attacks seem pretty similar graphically, only exception is really whether using 2 hands on the weapon or one...
SWF: Left Swing, Right Swing, Stab, Whirl
THF: Left Swing (same as SWF), Down Swing, Up Swing, Wide Slash (very similar to Whirl)
So, in place of Right Swing and Stab, we have Down and Up (one of those is in almost exact same location graphically as Stab)... not much difference, and as long as the game understands there is a difference between graphics and actual mechanics, shouldn't be difficult... EQ2 came out years before DDO, and it manages to do this just fine without any issues whatsoever... I realize there may be some issues with Engine and Code, but honestly, after this many years, even those 2 shouldn't be an issue. And yes, I am only saying this because certain weapon fighting styles are very similar, not asking for TWF to be able to be masked behind a THF graphic, or an Archer as a S&B or a crossbow guy using an SOS lol... but single weapon melee styles should be able to be overlayed...

This. A thousand times this.
I love cosmetic customization, so the more the better.
However, I have always been disappointed with the goggles/eyes and helms issue. I would love (and would pay) to be able to have my glowing eyes and my mask showing at the same time. As it stands, I don't wear my glowing eyes ever, even though I have them and have festival and alchemical enhancements on them, because my characters looks so much better with the mask than with glowing eyes but no mask. To be able to wear my glowing eyes AND keep my mask on/visible would be a dream come true!
*hopes with all his might that this might become a reality*
...
*goes back to drooling over cosmetic weapons and the mirror of glamoring*

What does "shield-only" meen?
Can i not i glamere a shield and an dwarven axe and wear them same time?
If the weapons are categorized in fighting styles - is it then possible to equip an dwarven axe, but put on a glamered hammer?

Just out of curiosity, is a fix being worked on for the following?
I used a Mirror (On Live) to make a Shadowscale Outfit Cosmetic.
When I have it equipped and visible, I see the outfit, but no particle effects.
When I have the outfit equipped but not visible, I get the Particle effects...
