So recently, After seeing a bunch of Dooooom threads about server populations, I did a tour of all the servers to see for myself. In the process, I jumped on a bunch of long ago abandoned/forgotten toons, to see stuff that was once rare treasures, but now are still useful at best, or religated to some bank toon someplace as they are no longer even really helpful anymore. But two pieces really got me waxing nostalgic... The cloven jaw warbeads and my gold ring of feathers..... Lvl 1 FF items are common these days, and +2 con items aren't rare anymore either (margarettes necklace killed the warbeads long ago). But it got me thinking, what other items did you once treasure, but are no longer what they once were?

It took me a long time to get into the higher level content. I rolled and rolled frequently. I played for almost a year before I got a character past level 10. During that time, Carnifex was my go to item. I had one Carnifex and passed that around amongst several characters for quite a long time.

I rarely use it anymore, except when Tr'ng...but it probably is my most prized possession. (Not my most powerful, but still my favorite).

Probably my large slot ring. That thing has seen so much use... at level 1 it almost always had ff and +20 hp, at late levels con +6 and/or greater false life. After cannith pass almost always had +10% melee alacrity on it.

I have a stupid nostalgia for the endless supply of warforge only necklaces of underwater action with proof agains poison on them that I used to get with umd's so stupidly high I couldn't even give those things to rogues. LOL It was a running joke when I opened chests, and so much laughter came out of it.

Otherwise digital gear is just...digital gear. None of it's real and when the servers go away it will all vanish and I"ll never think of the gear again, just the fun times I had with the other players.

Not very legagy I suppose, but I love my epic goggle of time sensing, mostly because I've put in it the 5% exp augment so I wear them from 20 to.. 20.. to 20 again :) and again.. and I don't think about Mantle or Voice anymore..

But if I'd have to choose a standard item, I'd go with this too:

Necklace of contemplation. Was the perfect level 1 twink item.

I still have a couple of old sunblades & mace of smiting which are pretty nifty & useful.. also a couple of the old-style cloak of ice (3xrest blue fireshield clicky). Oh, and i've still got a couple of rings of spellstoring knocking about too.

Old mealstorm from tempest spine. Min lv 2, so amazing til carnifex, also do those broken no min lv rings from madness chain count?
Could get stuff like 6 str resist 5 or gr false life at lv 1, pretty broken back then, but everyone farmed those

My favorites..

~Royal Guard Mask. - 1x/rest free teleport

Abbot goodies...Unique and useful to just about everyone for level range/endgame.
~Litany - +1 Profane bonus to all stats.. arguably best item in the game.
~Quiver of Alacrity.. 10% ranged alacrity & upgraded 30% striding.. best part.. no min level..
~ Vile Blasphemy - Gloves: 3x sp regen, Dexterity +6, UMD +3

Can't go wrong with shroud, and more shroud.. all nice customizable weapons, gear and of course /clickies
Ornamental daggers were awesome until they got screwed in the change from Superior potency to spell power.. Dev's never went back and fixed those to the usefulness they deserved.

Feathers retroactive revamp screwed many good items. the predetermined value for Prefix/Suffix and augment slots made most of the older great items unworthy of the level they represented.

Divine Power clickies, +30% Healing Amp items, and what was my most prized but now utterly useless possession, a pair of Firestorm Greaves.

...it got me thinking, what other items did you once treasure, but are no longer what they once were?
When I started pondering this, there were a few that came to mind. At first I was going to say the Necklace of Contemplation because it was ideal on every character and every life; or the Seven Fingered Gloves because they were pure awesome.

However after really considering...

I have to say Dragon Touched armor. Even though it was an absolute pita to get it right, it was and still is the only truly customizable armor in the game and no other attempt (Madness chain, Thunder Forged...) has come close. Even though the crafting format sucked (and didn't get much better) and it hasn't maintained the longevity of usefulness that Green Steel has, the concept of what DT was supposed to accomplish puts it at the top of my list.

From way back: (Now all useless for the most part)
+5 WoP longswords for my Ranger with icy/force rituals.
+5 Silver Holyburst of Greater EVil Outsider Bane with icy/force rituals.
+5 WoP longbow. <- this used to be the best bow in PVP ever. Fun timers were had by all.

Actual named items?
Silver Longbow
Original Black Dragon Hide armor with the ranged alacrity. I wish I still had mine.
Pale lavender Ioun Stones(before they were easy to pull) Literally nothing in this game will top the excitement I felt the first time I pulled one of those legit in WW on a TR. They were still one of the rarest items in the game then, and I had one. I remember when word got out I got SO many tells from people trying to buy it from me. Half a year later and every alt on the server had one. Lol

The one I still use often on all my toons and love a lot is Epic time sensing goggles.
I've made a pair on all my toons, use it every life. It was also my first epic item on my main, and all my alts.

Maelstrom, min level 2 GAxe of badassery
Bottle of Air - pulled from a rare chest in Cerulean Hills in 2009.
Firestorm Greaves - Oh how I hated the sands for not giving these beautiful boots up. Finally got them when a guildie sent me them
Tharnes Goggles - the "Must have" item in its day
Bracers of the Glacier - Still use them on a tr run. Great little item to get your hands on

Hehe I consider old the first 6 months of DDO.

I have a loot gen level 7 belt of Fire Shield (fire) clickie pulled from Redwillow's Ruins in the first 1-3 months in the game. Was never supposed to drop and to my knowledge there has never been any intentional Fire Shield clickie loot gen items.

Have 1 or 2 items that are race restricted and allowable by multiple races (warforged and Halfling only) from the early days. They changed it so RR items have only one race.

I have the very first Tumbleweed (Hound raid ring) pulled on Argo, and arguably across all servers, documented in a first raid completion post when I led the first successful Hound), and on my ranger no less which was a perfect fit.

The item I still have in my inventory on a number of toons, that goes back to the start of the game, is the Pearl of the Sirines, which I think can still drop in low-mid quests. Just an gnarly luxury item, like an ivory backscratcher.

Heh, I keep one of these on Araphina as well; I use it every life as well. Make it really easy to get a full tumber pretty early on.
I wasn't lucky enough to run the raids when they first came out though, as I hadn't started playing MMO's yet. I still only played JRPG's.

To go along with this though, something I consider a must have from level 13-22 on every toon are the Levicks bracers.
+6 Str, 20% heal amp, and when paired with either the shield or a pair of Dragon touched outfit +3 AC, and 20% threat.
+1 AC ritual for a all around very nice item.

Also, Ring of Thelis. Heh

Most treasured:
2 rapiers with icy festival burst and stone of change rituals
(The keen one a gift from an in-game friend - and keen rapiers were not cheap at the time...)
Originally both were min lvl 12, and used until I got my first greensteel crafted.
Now they are min lvl 18 and will likely remain in TR cache until the servers shut down.
They will never be deconned for parts, though.

2nd most treasured:
First greensteel weapon, a MinII greataxe, in part because a guildie gave me half the larges I needed to finish it.
I went and farmed a bloodstone for him in return.

Others: clickies. Oh how I miss clickies.
You could tell a tank was a real, serious tank if they had their own solid fog clicky, 5 charges.
Ring of spell storing/Mysterious Bauble. I still farm for the bauble occasionally.
I still find Divine Power clickies when I rummage through mules.
Invisibility, haste, jump.
Kormor's Belt. Good times, there.
Amara's Belt. All those old ToD things we'd stand around the chest passing around.

I still have a RR:Halfling +2 greatsword with festival icy burst and force ritual and no min level I gleefully wave around Korthos when I TR.

My first flawless red dragon scale. Well, I probably don't have it, but I symbolically keep one.
I had arrived, could trade with the big kids, and was fabulously wealthy all in one VoN completion.

It's The Spellsword Robe.
Don't even bother to try to loot one, nor to try to find where it drops... It never dropped anywhere.
It's a plain robe that was created by GMs for our guild to have a uniform ( it also existed as a Docent ) during an Event in Europe long ago.

And before people jump on it : it has no power at all, it's a plain, no bonus, robe. And since we moved to the US it lost it's color pattern.

The early days of Cannith crafting provided me with my most exciting gear. Being able to craft superior devil beaters when the game was all about running those raids and being able to use crafted vampiric weapons the rest of the time...oh man.

That crafting system pulled me out of a one year retirement and I haven't been able to retire again since :(

Ah, so many nostalgic treasures that are now long lost to the newer generations...

* A min lvl 3 cloak with 3x shield clicky that I use every life that doesn't have umd;

* Guild slotted items, especially large guild slots;

* Old school Cloak of Ice with 3x fireshield clicky (the new one sucks IMO);

* My Ring with 5x grease clicky

* Fernian wraps with no minimum level

* But my favorite item, that I looted on my 1st or 2nd run was the old, totally unbound, Ring of the Ancestors (yes, I'm looking at you BTCoE status, you blow)

I also have fond memories of farming the giant caves in threnal to get my 1st +5 con belt which gave me over 100hp on my wf fighter (what do you mean cons not a dump stat....).

Be warned though at the beggining DDO was a very buggy mess (yup even by todays standards). It took almost a year for them to work out a lot of the kinks and to make the game enjoyable. If I could go back to any point for me it would have been when they rolled out demon sands as I think (for me at least) that was when the game was at its peak and had the perfect balance between character power and quest difficulty.

Unless I've missed something, yes to both. I pulled a lvl 1 ff ring from havendashers last month, and bottle of air from "hips" about 6 months ago. The bottle of air was always extreamly rare from chests ( only seen 1 ever in a chest in over 7 years.) but have pulled a few from the "hips" drop point.

Well if we are bind nostalgic then I offer the following

Epic Garos' Malice: http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Epic_Garos'_Malice
This was the first "epic" item I ever made back when epic items and quests actually meant something. Wasn't the best item but man was it nice to walk around and hear the ooh's and ahhh's

Ring of Feathers: http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Ring_of_Feathers
The old school unbound version. Managed to pull two before they basically became worthless and sold one for 200k back in the day.

Ring of Spell Storing: http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Ring_of_Spell_Storing
I pulled 2 of these before I ever got the bloodstone I was farming for. Back in the day this was an amazing item that I still carry and use in emergencies. But when mana pots were less plentiful and blue bars a lot shorter adding 200-300 SP back to that bar to reach the next shrine was amazing. Would love to make it epic but in all my years I haven't even seen a shard, seal or scroll drop for it ever, for anyone. I am pretty sure they each have a drop rate of about 1 in a 1,000,000,000,000.

Yes indeed there was once a time when this item was both powerful and coveted and I .. I had two of them. It was glorious. They still sit in my bank gathering dust but I won't get rid of them.

I was wondering, since we had the other thread about FF and UA items seeming to be rare drops now - does the bottle of air still drop?

Yes, just pulled one today in HIPS.

The good ol' days :). I remember using the Dynastic Falcata for quite a long time as well as the Bloodstone (I still use the Bloodstone with the Resistance Ritual applied to it).

I really liked having my Bloodrage Symbiont (http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Bloodrage_Symbiont). It was never really a good item, but I still use it on melees for the rage clickie. Plus you can get an wind-stance elf with 2 con with it and what's more amazing than that?

Got one in the first chest I ever opened in the sands. Thought, "Wow!" Still have it but never use it; Stalker rings are close enough. But I remember my toon's first life with the old Deepwood sniper enhancement and getting 400 damage on snipe shots. Was shocked; so I keep the Bloodstone as a good luck charm, even though I never equip it.

same for me, but my bloodstone sat in my bank for 2 years until I realised how good it was......I pulled it running out there on my gimp drow pally, and I pulled it and was gonna give it away because I thought it wasn't very good.....luckily i had nice party mates and they told me to keep it as it was very good XD

My favourite item is probably my original lit 2 greensteel greatsword......kinda miss playing that wf fvs, good times.

I received the Bottle of Air from the usual spot in HIPS two weeks ago.

I have also received the Bottle of Air as reward from STK(years ago) and Recovering the Lost Tome(three years ago).

No one has mentioned

Beholder Optics from Invaders!
Trapblast Goggles from STK unbound, level 1, +4 to reflex saves. I probably have around 10 of these.

Lot of people talking about the bottle of air.... am I missing somthing?

I have probably pulled 3 or 4 of these over the years and they sold very well but I have no idea why.

It is currently the only no min level UA item as far as I know. I believe all others are at least min level 5 now... but I could be wrong there. Not that there are many quests that need a UA item before lvl 5, but there are some it can be very helpful, especially if you are new, and don't know exactly were you are going. However with the ring of water breathing you get in the grotto, most of the lowbie quests do not need a UA Item.

A Mace of Smiting and a Sun Blade. Cute twink items and now random loot gen does better.

Oh and a Carnifex.

Some of the stuff I see listed here is still awesome stuff. Just for not as long as it used to be.
Necklace of contemplation still sees heavy use from my toons but only for a couple levels. No ml +10hp , + 5 concentration +1 attack is still awesome twink.

.........

My list of old gear that was glued to my toons before that now just sits in the bank
Aryln's ring used to be awesome , now not so much.
Boots of the innocent , like any striding item except the abbot quiver.
Icy rainment
Devout handwraps - still somewhat useful but not the omfg it was before.
-----
I'd like to add DT armor to that list but my monk is still a healing amp build and I still can't get over +10&20% amp on one piece of gear. Add to that the abysmal state of random gen armor and I don't see it getting removed any time soon

Hands down Best level 8 item... http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Stave_of_the_Seer

Okay, that's completely awesome!

I've never seen one drop, but I suppose that's not surprising as I often don't take the time to run Restless Isles (the quests are great, but the explorer area blows chunks).

Also completely awesome at level 8 is the Snakeskin Vest (http://ddowiki.com/page/Snakeskin_Vest) (I don't think that there's actually a better light armor in the game from 8-14or15), the Luck Blade (http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Luck_Blade), and I still use my old Sirocco a little bit when leveling (the new one is min lvl 10, the old is min lvl 8)

Not level 8, but one of my casters has the old Black Dragonscale Robe, which is still pretty decent for leveling a caster in.

A couple of my casters have the Mysterious Bauble (http://ddowiki.com/page/Mysterious_Bauble) too.

Original Whirlwind.

no binding, expanded crit range, excellent damage, ML 8!!!, excellent look, and piles of knock downs for many levels. All my toons have used it at one time or another, and several friends TR's and just starting out as well.

Love it. Even if it is outclassed these days.

I love the Bauble. It took me a long time to get one for my main character. One of my farming characters got it just by running the quest for xp/favor on the very first try.

That's how it bounces.

Yup, my very first DQ the torc of Prince Raiyum-de II dropped for me, was on my melee toon.... Thankfully I't was a shortman run and the partyleader said it was ok to pike my caster as well... :)

Night's Grasp +1 longbow of Greater Aberration Bane. ML 10, and my ranger uses it until level 22. For its intended targets, only outclassed by Pinion.

Not sure if it counts, but the item that "gave me a warm feeling" when I pulled it was a +5 Mithral Tower Shield, Race Restricted: Elf, back when +5 Mitrhal Tower Shields were still coveted...

Forced me to make my 2nd character, an Elven TWF fighter with limited tanking capabilities back when HoX normal was hard to complete at lvl... :D

Haha, awesome stuff. Always wish I played in the early days. I thought I knew of every item there was but never heard of that pearl!

So, legacy being stuff you can't get anymore, mine are...

A couple of old robes... ML:6 deathblock robe, ML:6 20hp robe, ML:6 sacred robe of mod fort.
A couple old versions of named items... whirlwind, ferrian wraps, maelstrom, stave of the seer, arcane shard, cloak of ice, phase hammer.
My old Epic Antique Greataxe, with a +7 gem, which has higher base damage then the new ones.
ML:10 Shocking burst handwraps of lacerating with force damage ritual and icy burst added to them.
Couple greater conva. of supp. parrying bracers.

Lots and lots and lots of BTA versions of stuff that has become BTC (or BTCOE) over the years. Sure they miss an augment slot or +1 less damage, but my inventory space is precious.

Litany of the dead.

Really like this trinket since I started to play ddo, and it took me 40 pug runs of abbot to get it in Ghallanda when the raid was challenging and had a low success rate. And most of the people I ran with are afk now.

However I lost it in TR bank when I undelete my main toon, sad story.

My very first Muck Doom. I might have pulled it on my very first trip through the pit. I had no idea it was rare. I haven't pulled one since.
My very first their 3 greensteel item - LIT2 Maul. I loved it. Makes me want to roll a barbarian just to make another one.

On my first melee (TWF Paladin) a friend helped me make 2 paralyzing khopeshes with icy burst festival ritual and that was way before the khopesh of water was added to the game. Fun times :)

Now add 1 druid level for this spell and you have a level 8 weapon doing over 4d6 +4 of base dmg per swing...

When I got my first character up to level 12-14 or so a friend took me out to the desert for the first time to farm for the rare items.

First chest I ever opened in Menechtarun had a shiny Ring of Spell Storing in it.

I carry that on any caster I'm leveling.

I hardly ever actually click the thing but it reminds me of how awesome a pull it was.

The winners for actual hours of use for items would be the bugged loot that dropped from Lordsmarch the first week it came out.

No minimum level +4 stat items, no min lv mod fort/+6 poison ring, no min lv shocking burst of pure good with icy burst from risia, no min lv +10 skill items.

I had quite a twink set up for any/all toon until the loot pass made them all level 9 as they rightly should be.

-Lesser/--/Greater Conv. of Superior Parrying Bracers
-+1 Riptide of Lacerating Great Axe (ML 8) with Icy Burst Ritual. 1d6 Frost, 1d4 Whatever, 1d8 Bleed, 1d6 Bleed, 1d6 Bursting Frost. At level 8. Still need to Force Ritual it, never bothered to.
-Cloven Jaw War Beads
-Divine Power Clickies
-Haste 3x/5x Clickies
-20 Pairs of Visor of the Flesh Render
-For a while we had +6 Stat rings with no ML that were BTA but those days are over.

Back when the game was about 7 months old (Level Cap 10) I was running Elite chest farms on C06 part 6 and pulled a +5 Shocking Burst Great Axe of Pure Good, which was at the time the most powerful lootgen weapon mods you could pull, I believe. I mean there were extremely rare Vorpals and Wounding/Puncturing, but those didn't work very well on bosses. I hadn't been playing too long and the offers I got on the forum for it were absolutely insane.

Probably my large slot ring. That thing has seen so much use... at level 1 it almost always had ff and +20 hp, at late levels con +6 and/or greater false life. After cannith pass almost always had +10% melee alacrity on it.

oh yeah
i was so satisfied as i finally had a ring with a large guildslot!
too bad the large guild health gem isnt working anymore (since it doesnt stack with the new airship hp bonus)
but at least the sp one is still worth it, since it got more than twice the ammount of sp given compared to the shipbuff

@ topic: i'd say my +1 evoctaion dagger of major ice lore was my best and beloved item back in 1st life, especially after i put a superior glaciation 8 on it in the risia ice games
