I have been playing this game for quite some time and I'm proud to admit I have never even created a mule toon and I never filled my all my bank slots (except with ****).
I asked my guildmate and he said he had 4 mule toons and I was like... wut? He said it's mostly BtA stuff, we talked about it for quite a few minutes but the conversation obviously didn't get anywhere, I just kept telling to delete some stuff for 20 minutes.
Honestly, how do you people fill so many mules...? Are you keeping your Clubs of the Holy Flame or something like that? I know it's a sacred weapon but it's time to let it go!

Hoarding. Things like all levels of Challenge items, Cove items, Mabar items and various BTA items from chains like the Missing chain can take up quite some room. Add in the various rune arms, all those various ingredients that you never use but might someday, Festivult cookies, and some useful random gen gear and you can get quite an impressive collection.

I saw that club for SALE yesterday on the ah. lol.
But seriously, Ive been playing only since Sept 2013 and I have 13 characters of which 11 are placeholder/banktoons. Mostly holding lootgen garbage or bound on acquire (still mostly garbage). I really have no choice though, as a lootgen +6 health gloves lists for 20-30k PP these days and I haven't seen anything useful from a vendor since november.

my 6 mules hold a variety of stuff. only 2 are failed characters I stopped playing between 13 and 15 and actually have K favor maxxed out. the other 4 are just vet status characters. I use them to store anywhere from TR gear to tomes for future characters to miscellaneous stuff like hires with time left, Eberron shards, sp pots, bags I looted for future characters, cookies and other stuff I don't want my characters I actually play to take up space. most of the stuff I have stored is BTA, but I do have some that is BTCoE.
1 for shields/armor
2 for items
3 for weapons
4 for miscellaneous
5 for tomes
6 for miscellaneous weapons like named kamas, kukris, bastard swords and staffs for future characters.
5 years of collecting and my bank toons just continue to grow. I was just thinking the other day I need to do another cleanup or I will have to create 7 for epic items. if we could have a better banking system I could eliminate 6 mules and eliminate the constant logging in and out just to grab an item from a bank toon or logging in and out of toons trying to find something you misplaced and cant remember which toon has it. Turbine could make some serious cash if they could do this.

Been playing since 09. I have 3 mules. Filled with things like tomes/seasonal items and general hording. All those save for a rainy day but never actually use. I like looking at their inventories about once a year to see all that fat loot! Maybe turbine should make a trophy case where you can put stuff that you will probably never use but just cant let go of.

Well I suppose if you play a single toon, a single way, and only care about a single life progress, bank space is easy to come by, for example, my Heal Bot Clonk, has ample inventory space and bank space, because well, I never plan to TR them and I only play one way with them and thus I have zero need to quest after "situational" gear or other needs, I focus on one thing, healing, and then everything else is SP, reflex save and HP, with all other options being worthless.
However, my TR project, I have a collection of weapons from Ranged to Melee, to span most levels from 1 - 20, with several set each for a specific situation and in some cases devoted to a specific adventure pack, Like Mournloads for Orchard, etc. I also have a collection of armors from cloth to plate, situation dependent, class dependent, and level dependent, as well as shields, also level/class dependent, and you get the idea. This fills the bank slots quite fast, and I have not even gotten to the additional stuff like head, hands, neck, boots, belt, back, and rings, which also take up a substantial amount of space.
Now mix in a few other things like, festival items, like potions, and then add in scrolls, bags, wands, and even if I am only using what I need for this life, and what I expect to need for next life, this takes up an insane amount of room.
Sure, if I sat at cap, only played one life, or did some 14/1/5 mix where I always played the same build to carry the TR class, that would cut down on space, and I would slit my writs in boredom playing such a away, I TR to experience playing that class, not to get some stupid PL, which, no matter what anyone says, I never would TR just for the PL feat, it is simply not worth it to me, I TR because I enjoy the process.
Anyway, all the gear I have, I earned, so what you are wondering is why don't I just vendor trash the stuff I spent the time to earn.. well golly that is a great question... maybe because, you know, I went through the effort to earn I might want to keep it.

Well, for my main I have effectively 3 bank toons full with gear.
1. Weapons for future lives, and BTA weapons for any new toons I create/TR. I have full sets of melee weapons for different types of builds, so I have a full set of staves I use, other THF weapons, a full set of rapiers, scimitars, and Khopesh. all my Shortswords are BTC.
2. Gear for TR's and new toons. Mostly things that are BTA gear that can be used by almost any build. New Icy Raiment, Challenge gear at various levels, Cove trinkets, Extra large ing/gem/collectibles bags, Extra BTCoE named loot that will be useful to hear up new toons. I keep all of my named EE items(or base epic items) I pull and don't use on my main on this toon. I've got all the gear for an EE ready shiradi just in case...
3. Misc. gear and items. Extra sets of +1/2/3/4 stat/skill tomes for alts, Blank Silver weapons for crafting DR breakers for ungeared TR's, Event items and all my event ing bags. Lootgen items for use during events that will be particularly useful/powerful on future builds/tr's but have no specific use for now.
And then I have a 4th toon that's not a bank toon, but I do store some things on it like Alchemical weapon blanks, blank GS items, Different items from chains like Madness chains and Attack on stormreach. Basically named items that are useful to have when you want them, but are annoying to have to farm for.

.. Basically named items that are useful to have when you want them, but are annoying to have to farm for.
This sums it up for me :)
There are also those items that some day might see a brighter future (usually dated raid gear) that are just too good to delete.
This might chance as inventory space value is increasing very quickly.
On a melee character that is far from cap, and mostly 90% THF-ing i have 15 weapon swaps, including 3 shield combos, a thrower, a bow, and my gswords and gaxes.
Large ingredient bags are filling up so fast as well, they dont feel large at all when you need 11 to hold stuff and still be able to collect into bag :D

As a active TR/player of more than one character, I moistly store low level gear for different classes, and same stat items in different slots. I try to have2 of each must have item too, so I can equip it bout on my TR, and on character I play. Also crafting ingredients, epic scrolls/seals/base items (in bags, but there are a lot of them), Rare scrolls and potions (spell point pots, invis pots, exc), Rarer forms of clickies (divine power x5, Rage x5, Exc), some build specific items, Extra tomes, upgrade tomes...
That said I do have a lot of junk I should clean out.

loot isnt a problem 4 me.I saved 4 pages of cr^p and then learned what really needs saving.Justa few key items .Whepons for various lvls are by far most abundant. Zero mule toons ,and I play 6 different toons.Buying new stuff u need is no problem(unless you have no plat saved)Pretty easy to accouter your character if you have a hat /whepon/armor covered from the start. With new ship buffs ,its easy to run with weak equipment anyways...a real shame as items are way less important at lower lvls

Well, if people have problems with space, they need LESS junk, not MORE space for more junk.
There is no search or sensible inventory management, more space makes it worse.
I was just thinking about this because of last week bank sale.
Never bought any upgrade, have basic 20 shared bank.
But I try to move/ sell stuff really fast / cheap, do not ever bank random loot or easily farmable items. Basically only Greensteel and raid gear.
Each to their own but I sometimes wonder what kind of completely useless junk people must have been hoarding :)
Compulsive hoarding or collecting makes for good business for Turbine too.
I have been playing this game for quite some time and I'm proud to admit I have never even created a mule toon and I never filled my all my bank slots (except with ****).

Some people like to hoard, including myself. I like to seek out every named item out there in existence. For instance, did you know there is a Vial of Slumberdust for the STK chain? Absolutely useless, but I like to keep one. And the Rattle Charm, from the Titan raid, I don't really see how Sonic and Acid Lore really jive in a build, but I like to keep it also. Hoarding is fun!
Additionally, I only have one character I play, and my plan is to perpetually TR/ETR him, so I want items for any type of build out there. On the other hand, I have 14 full mules, max banks slots and max inventory slots.

This is something I go through every so often.... It never ceases to amaze me the "junk" that builds up, even if you try not to let it.
Sometimes its flagging/quest specific things, such as seal of heaven (used in wiz-king, found in a side quest) or essences of dragon (needed for Stealer of Souls). At the time you were running them often so you saved them "for the next run" that never happened.
Sometimes its things such as shards of power, as when you want to make something, you want to make it, not wait for the random drop.
Sometimes it is that useful item for a specific level range that never seems to drop when you need it, but drops every time once you no longer need it, but you want to make sure it's available for your next toon. (muckbane, I'm looking at you. Yes you don't need one, but I'm not going to pass if I get one) one toon has 5 muckbanes on it.
There are those items you outgrow, but you are just not ready to part with it... My lvl 28 melee toon just found his old +2 True law of disruption Great ax. no intention of ever using it again...
Then there are items that you worked too hard on to get rid of, such as my Epic Antique Great Ax.
And then there are those items that are just too rare or come from special events that you don't know what to do with, yet you can't get rid of... I still have 4 year old birthday cakes on some toons... As well as blessing/tokens of the Traveler, claim tickets to stuff, as well as stacks of XP, guild renown, crafting XP pots, that "I'm waiting for the correct moment, so as not to waste them"
Yes I go through and clean the junk out from time to time, but it builds quickly if you're not on top of it.

i have 1 character that i send all my scales, shield pieces, tome pages, basically any ingredients/collectables that arnt shroud or epic crafting because they are permanently in my shared bank, i have BTA cannith crafted stat items with master craft that i move from 1 tr to the next
everything else is sold or stored in the bank

Honestly I wish people would just liquidate some of their non-BTC inventory on the ASAH...
My characters could use those tomes you're hoarding. And AS don't go bad. If you need it later, odds are you can buy it back again from someone else on the ASAH, if everyone stopped hoarding everything :)
I don't mind that people enjoy curating a collection if that's what they find fun in a game. I mind when they start complaining that there isn't enough storage for them to play their personal metagame and calling for additional space. Especially because storage=servers=money, and that money has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is us.

The 30-32% cut to the AH for plat and ~40% for ASAH is what stops most people from doing this.

I still have low minimum level stat items on some of my mules from before crafting was a thing. I have cleaned out one of ten mules and that was when my weapons toon had no more inventory of bank slots. It was a trip down memory lane. Most of the stuff was ****, but I found a few treasures.

Mostly junk but i am always full on all my banktoons and most of my actives. example you never know if next year the troll regen ring will finally see some play in anycase its been stored for a couple of years just incase all my active characters got one

Well, to be honest, I personally never asked for more free bank space. I am more than willing to pay for it. If VIP got unlimited bank space, I would become VIP immediately. If it would cost 20000 TP for unlimited space, I would also pay. I don't see the problem in asking for more space if people are willing to pay for it. It is much less P2W than many other things in the game and has zero impact on the way others play DDO.

and most people on here don't ask for more free space. now people are willing to throw money at Turbine for more space and even more so for an improved banking system to eliminate bank toons. its such easy money for Turbine, but the new shared ingredients banking is just the beginning. hopefully it gets better than that though.

Most of the stuff that takes up space is **** that should go in a bag but wont. Like...shards of power, or challange tokens, or event items like bronze or motes. Then theirs of course tr stuff for the levels, trinkets, ml8 to 10 deathblock, heavy fort, invuln. (Basically stuff that was all to common years ago and is now not in existence on the ah.)
All of it just kinda adds up into this huge pile. Gets worse with the number of alts you have. Altaholics have er rough. got about 7 myself on one server.

It's pretty simple really. While I know I will most likely not use the vast majority of the stuff I save. I don't know which of it I might, so save anything that could be useful.
Which is likely why people tend towards the extremes on the issue.

Yes, I know. I was just answering to the post I quoted that stated that it costs money to store stuff. I know it costs money. Let me pay for it then.
About the new shared ingredients bank, it is kind of disappointing, with the amount of ingredients we currently have. I already bought a gargantuan ing. bag which has the advantage of letting me store BTC ings as well. The biggest storage problem for me is BTC stuff. Unbound and BTA stuff can be stored an mules, and although it is a pain to log-out/log-in ad nauseum to get what you want on the toon you want, it is manageable.
But I really hope you are right and the shared ingredients banking is just the beginning to our storage problems.

As for my bank characters, it's mostly BtA stuff for assorted levels. I have 22 characters on my main server. I'm not farming **** for all of them when I can just store until they need it during their TR. The rest is BtCoE gear that I've acquired but havent' decided on which character will get it or on what life.
Luckily, you don't have to understand the why, since it's not affecting you in the slightest.

Very much that.
One of my anti-burnout tactics for doing multiple PLs accross multiple toons - especially when some of them want multiples of the same PL (ie Cleric, Bard and Monk all enjoy 3x Pally PLs) is to try and make each life a little different, a little unique in it's design and build. This, combined with a desire to make each build (no matter how flavorful) as powerful and productive as I can, creates too many build variances to rely on even a few "standard" Reincarnation gear sets. Some items are universally useful, sure. For instance the Necklace of Contemplation is a standard on every life; however those universal items are rare (for me anyway).
Sorry, that became a bit of a digression...
The point I was meandering towards is that it's my hoarding of loot - especially pre-Ghostbane era goodies - that has enabled me to gear out many of those various lives. Among the most often usefull of those is a plethora of Helms & Rings of a variety of spell powers: Devotion, Radiance, Resonence, Combustion, etc... Not to mention the oh-so-rare Heal Amp among others.
Of course, none of that is really needed, and not all of it (that I have) is applicable (or at least desirable) from level 20 and up; but it's all in the "nice to have" category, and once it was no longer available I became all the more glad I hoarded it :D
Fwiw: when it comes to non-BTC storage, character slots (w/3 inventory tabs + 1 bank tab) are much more TP efficient than bank slots.

Turbine makes a game that has a ton a inventory space fillers and then does not sell the inventory space to carry it all.
That is like the embodiment of everything that is wrong with this game.

I hoard what is needed so I don't have to dump into shared bank, relog, etc. When that shared bank is full, I unload it onto someone who isn't going to be played for a while. I focus my playing efforts on 2 characters. 1 on epic content, 1 on heroic. When either hits their peak (epic has no destinies left to make, at 6mill karma in each sphere), then I shelf that character for the majority and focus on a different second character. If heroics are boring me, I pop on the epic, farm some gear, then do something else.
Ultimately, I am reducing the amount of farming I have to do later on.
I do have 43 characters to stock up for.

I used to have a bunch of stuff... had a second with 4 toons for mules and a toon on my main account for this.
Always told myself, I might need this or that if I ever make this or that toon.
However, I started a completionist toon, and the first few lives I was all OCD about having the best equipment for each level.
then on one life, I got tired of doing all that, and realized I had hit level 13 with nary +x stat item at all and using some weapon I had found.
And that was the end of my hoarding... doing elite streaks all the way to 20 each life and never really worrying about having the best gear because Turbine dumbed the game down so much that I could pretty much gain a level in the time it would take me to go to the bank, and rearrange gear, or log into other account to get gear moved over.
It was nice to be set free of the hoarding over something "I might need" in the future.
and I have 150 levels in all 3 types of crafting, and I don't even craft for new toons anymore except maybe when I get to level 9.
