The game worlds have reopened! Thank you for your patience, and we will see you in-game!
The DDO Game Servers and http://myaccount.turbine.com will be offline for maintenance on Monday, May 19th from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM Eastern (-4 GMT). The forums will remain up, but players may not be able to log in. Thanks for your patience, and we'll see you back in the game soon!

I sense there's always a conspiracy where the servers are down when I take a scheduled day off from work. :)
Oh, well. Be sure that your team meets the Hamster Union Local #1324's current demands so we can play again soon. (I recommend the Cheez-It snack crackers and an I.V. drip of the Dew of the Mountain...always a winner.)

and that explains why account page and forum log ins are offline too how?
it might be part of whatever is being done, but definitely not the only thing or even the primary thing, I assume.

Maybe not an explanation, but there was a heads up. Server downtime was posted on the launcher on Friday saying it'd be down Monday. It's Monday. Servers are down. Go figure.
For anyone else complaining about server maintenance... look here... it's a persistent, online world. Multiple worlds, in fact. It's not a console game, meaning, they can't work out every single bug before release, and they can't guaranty that new bugs won't pop up after release. So regular maintenance is actually a good thing, keeping the number of issues down. 4 hours now and then is a lot better than letting things go and having a 4+ day crash with no way of knowing what happened. Not to mention, does anyone know how easy or hard it is to defrag a server farm that's constantly running 24/7 with thousands upon thousands of people constantly coming and going, moving and shifting data around all the time? My computer defrags once a week, and it does it automatically while I'm sleeping. I set it up that way. Because if it defragged while I was awake, I'd be sitting here staring at the screen ripping my hair out waiting for it to be finished. I'd imagine defragging is a major issue for a server farm. Pop that into maintenance, and four hours is reasonable, considering my computer alone takes a half hour easily. Anywho, just my two cp.
Great work Turbine! Appreciate all you do for us, and I'll be here waiting when you come back online! ^_^

Could we please get at least a word on whether or not there will be client updates to download? You know, when you post a note that the maintenance break has ended?
(Size of download, or at least a rough estimate, would also be nice to know in advance if there is a download.)

I fully agree. Okay there are too many things to count that get on my nerves about the way the devs run things but 4 hour downtime and even extentions are acceptable.

Sooner or later, Turbine will realize that it's far better to give themselves more time and end up not needing it than it is to have to extend their downtimes almost every single time. That's my hope, at least. It probably won't ever happen. *sigh* Ah, well. This is why I make sure I have other things I can do.

Ha, welcome back. Be prepared to have to redo a lot on your characters (enhancement pass). Although its possible that your gear is outdated, some of it might actually be wanted because nowadays it doesn't drop any more. I guess that after 2 years you will just have to endure another hour or so.

Welcome back.
Sorry you picked today to come back. But once the game is back up, you will be fine.
What server are you on? Some of us might be on your server and we can help you with plat etc, if you are on our server. Such as, I am on Cannith and Ghallanda where I have more junk than I need. On Argonesson, Sarlona I can help out. I do live on Wayfinder, but basically have nothing of any value whatsoever. I do have characters on Thelanis, Khyber, and Orien, but if I have anything I need it.

Really? Everyone knows we don't believe in Canadian holidays in the US, which incidentally is where Turbine is based. Just like we don't believe in Canadian currency. For evidence, ask any American how many times they've felt like an idiot for trying to pay for something and finding out that they're 25 cents short because somehow a "Canadian Quarter" ended up in our pockets instead of an American one, and the stores and even vending machines here won't take them....
I jest! I love you guys Canada! You has awesome bacon!!!

They don't mention when they are (asking) for your money to become a VIP or to buy adventures/classes or packages that :
DDO has constant bugs that need rectifying so downtime is often extended to rectify these re-occuring issues, this will leave you frustrated. Also whilst in game you will find that the 20th completion you have been working so hard to complete to obtain said item is definetely not guaranteed to give you said item. Ooops and just to make you feel that we are always here to help. Send us a ticket to which we will reply with please visit this website and leave your ideas for ingame improvement there. Soon I feel people will be asking for there money back. Esp when they begin to realize that some bugs and extended downtimes are causing them to no longer enjoy the game that they invest so much time and money.

For a certain reason it says I cannot give you reputation twice for the same post which is too bad. But don't worry, after 3 pages and a double downtime extension, we finally have a winner - and a real one ! Dude with such a great first post, if I were you, I wouldn't post anymore, all the rest would look so bland in comparison wioth this piece of art.

Doh, Monday is a holiday here in the north.
You know you would think they would start scheduling these updates for Tuesdays. It's far more likely that players will have a Friday or Monday off and thus be more greatly inconvenienced on those days. I know we don't schedule any maintenance or patches at work on Mondays or Fridays.
In particular given than something around 30-40% of these maintenance patches seem to get extended it makes even less sense to schedule them on the first or last day of a work week.
And yes some of this is grounded in the fact that this is a Holiday Monday in Canada and, of course, the one day that I actually have to myself and available for gaming on the holiday.

I hope to god they use a filesystem that doesn't require defragging. Most widely used operating systems apart from Windows ship with filesystems that don't need to be defragged. Most NAS / SAN systems don't need defragging as they don't use NTFS (even if they report to Windows that they do), let alone (12,16,32,x)FAT.

This I did not know, and now that I do, I kinda' hope you're right. But even if it's not defragging, the servers probably do need some sort of regular maintenance. Most machines do. Cars, computers, planes, Star Jones.... Everything but the TARDIS. That's one perfect machine!

Any odds on this being a three day downtime again? ;)

UPDATE: Today's Maintenance has been extended until 11:30AM (-4 GMT). We apologize for the inconvenience.
In the future, would it be possible to try and schedule these maintenance period between Tuesday and Thursday. Local holidays are often set to fall on Monday or Friday, as example it's holiday today in Canada and I think it's holiday next Monday in USA.
Also, if you would of been able to bring servers back up for original time, this would be les of an issue, but an 8 hour downtime period is pretty long! (game client currently states 2pm for return of server...this thread has not been updated at 12h10 eastern time)
Ok, now let me tell you about my problems...
What, you don't want to hear about my problems? Imagine that.
I don't pay to listen to excuses. I can understand having unforeseen problems or even having a bad day once in a while. But this stuff is repeatable to the point that when they do what they say and communicate it well, it's truly amazing.
Problems?

They could at last use the time to do some long needed fixes to the lag problems... But I feat they only will get worse afterwards...
By the way, something seems to have been going horribly wrong with the server hamsters, it seems. No necromancer available to produce zombie hamsters when one is needed?

does anyone on the forum actually stick around here because they love the game that - gasp! - turbine made for us? Or do people just come here to complain constantly?
yes.

DEVS - While I do understand that problems arise that are unforeseen, you would think after EIGHT, yes that's eight YEARS of handling "maintenance" on this product you would have figured how to keep it within a reasonable time frame given. A good 70% of the time you always bugger it up and have to extend it (which I and i'm sure many of us don't mind) by an hour or two. Then you turn around and due to stress, higher ups, complications, short staffing, or just flat out honest general incompetency add another 2+ hours onto the scheduled "3" hour maintenance. This has often times even led to entire days of being unable to access the product which a fair number of us so graciously pay out of our pockets for on a repeated basis for an out dated and antiquated product. We do this for love of DnD, for what DDO USED to be, and because more than likely (if they are anything like myself) for the sheer amount of money we've spent on the game over the last 8 years and we just can't walk away from that investment.
All ranting aside, you really need to get your development, research, and maintenance teams together and motivated to get their hamsters moving. Not sure if your marketing and finance people realize it or not, but the moment a competitor who's customer service / reliability / etc whom are MUCH superior to Turbine's are able to launch a product that has the same level of customization (because let's be honest, that's the only thing your product has left currently), then you're in a world of trouble.
Final point: take the time to do things right, code up a maintenance protocol that everything done that you want for the session which when activated will auto-run itself and seamlessly integrate to the live servers. The result is about an hour downtime, if that.

Bag it.
See you tomorrow.
Just so you know DDO got more information about the downtime than Infinite Crisis. Their announcement still says 10 AM EST.

Do you actually have an idea of the workings of a server farm pretty sure you don't otherwise your statement would not have been made lol and if you have to defrag your pc once a week you're doing it all wrong, jump forward in time 20yrs mate and catch the rest of us. And yes i work with servers everyday, maybe not game servers, but i can guarantee they see more traffic then Turbines and far less maintenance, not commenting on their set-up just your pretence of knowing how it all works.

The longer the downtime, the less I want to even exist in the same universe- much less play the same MMO- as the people who rage in the maintenance thread.

yes I'd like to know what changed and I know there was changed because I already noticed the Bank is different and has an extra tab. what else changed?

So, looks like you have activated that bag bank thing then Turbine? Interesting, was that WAI or an oversight on the version you put live? Any other changes we should know about?
Maybe that was not completely WAI (the bank tab) as its there on Wayfinder, but not on Khyber (I haven't seen other servers yet)

guess the tab is gone now back to normal guess it was a glitch of some sort.

it's gone now so looks like it's added to game but not suppose to be 'active' for players and was quickly removed.

Yeah, looks like that was a small mistake. Shame, I should have taken the opportunity to try and respec my bard on wayfinder to swashbuckler while the development/LAM build was switched on :-D

Not quite true, as for most of the maintainance Lamannia was actually up, so you/we could have all taken a shot at evaluating epic 3BC and tried the SWF feats and the Bard Swashbuckler tree or sail around on updated / new guild airships with brand new (partially functional) guild amenities!
