Does anyone have tips for defeating the Shadar-Kai Assassins when they pull out those nasty chain weapons?

....get out of the way. When they finish swinging, go back in and kill them.

Runaway...
They can be stunned/held/tripped/paralyzed if you have that capability in the group.
the chain is angled so if you are in the right position you can avoid the chain... its tricky though and you don't have much room for tial/error.
best method is to move out of range then re-engage when whirling cycle is done.

Charm spells work well.
They seem to have a low Will save, and rip each other to shreds in no time.

Don't get touched by the chain, they enjoy it too much and think you should too

Yeah, get the heck out of the way. A high tumble means you can get out of range fast. (I know, not always possible.)
Last I recall stunning or tripping them didn't stop the attack either.

Stunning and tripping do stop the attack... If you can't do that... back up and get out of the range of the chain... they can't move when they are swinging that chain.
I find them a very interesting change of pace to combat... I like the Wheloon quests because the Shadar-Kai can be a challenge... One chain swinging guy is pretty easy to deal with... 2 or 3 in the same room takes some skill.
Real-time physics detection is what makes this game great, and more like a first person shooter... If they start swinging, either punch them in the face fast and stun them, or get the heck out of the way.

The Chain attack is a short ranged attack, they cannot move while they swing the chain so you can move out of range.
Any ability that can make a NPC not able to attack will also stop the chain swinging - Stun, Trip, SAP, charms, holds/paralyze etc.

I play melee-oriented characters of one ilk or another almost exclusively (even as a "caster") and have learned to deal with these annoyances pretty consistently.
Any tactical move or spell that will incapacitate them stops their attack. Once they get that chain out, you have three "warm-up" revolutions (about 1.5 seconds) until it starts to do damage. If you can shut them down before that, they're harmless.
As Missing mentioned, a decent tumble (30+) will allow you to avoid all damage while getting out of the way. If your tumble isn't that great, tumbling away from them at right angles to their forward position works best. A good tumble also allows you to attack while they are swinging. You can tumble in under the chain, perform a SF, SB, Trip, Sap, etc. and they'll happily let you to beat on them without being whipped in the process. Doing that does take some practice, but it's quite effective.

Stunning and tripping do stop the attack...
Glad they fixed that then. When it was first released I stuned and tripped many of them only to have their attacks still going on.

blind stops them from doing it as well. sunburst from druid (for example) works quite well
