I just got a Toshiba HDDR320E03X just installed the game on it. After reading threads upon threads of how an external ssd did wonders for DDO lag wise and that it fixed the double log in bug, I decided to get one. However, installed the game on the ssd and it still loads like a piece of ****. Any advice? Did I do something wrong? Is it my computer or is it me? The ssd has over 320gb of space and my hdd has 4 gb of ram? Any advice??
The only advice I can offer is to use DDO preloader. It did wonders for me.

Was it a new ddo install or a copy from your old drive?
I've got an SSD, and my first login after turning the pc on is flawless, subsequent ones are a nightmare unless I use the ddo preloader.

Its ddo problem which turbine refuses to address.

If this is the HDD you have installed DDO on:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4004963
It is not an SSD it is a slow 2.5 inch SATA Hard Drive.
It is also USB 2.0
I would expect DDO to run very badly if installed onto that drive.

Good catch Kambuk. Yea -DDO will be brought to an absolute crawl if you put it on that.

Well, um, obviously...? Why would you expect it to run any faster again?

Instead of a storage drive get an actual SSD thingy, like this:

The problem isn't with your computer, it's on Turbine's end. A large number of people have this problem. They need to fix this, everyone and their mother has had log on problems for longer than I can remember. Use the preloader until Turbine can fix their game so people can actually log in successfully without fan created applications.

i vote what he said, it's a odd problem that needs computer programers to fix.. . . ... . . ... . . .

Why on earth would you install it externally and kill all that potential speed???

Buy an actual SSD? (That stands for solid-state drive so you know what to ask for)
I'd also suggest re-installing Windows on the SSD too... Maybe you can get Best Buy to do that for you... Everything WILL run faster if you re-install clean on an actual SSD.

Unfortunately, you are getting mainly criticisms and not help here. What you need to know is that:
1. You did not buy an SSD. I would wipe it and try to return it. If you can't return it, use it as a back-up drive for photos, music, and other files.
2. If you can buy an actual SSD, buy that and install both DDO and your system as Thrudh mentioned.
3. If you can't buy an SSD, put DDO back on your internal hard drive. Games don't run well on an external drive. Then use the Preloader as that is the best you will be able to do if you don't have an SSD.
Good luck.

These are the solutions to your problem.
Please edit your original post to reflect that you did NOT actually install a SSD drive. Doing so would have fixed the issue and there is no reason for you to mislead others.
That said, Turbine should not be given a pass for failing to fix this issue for users of mechanical drives. They have had many months to deal with it.

Because he/she is not a tech, and thought an external drive was an SSD. Kinda like how some people have come to call a computer enclosure a "harddrive" or how some people think "lag" has anything to do with their side of a network card.

Depending on your system (notebook vs. desktop PC vs. Tower PC) you might want to buy and have installed an internal SSD drive. This presumably will only work in Towers and perhaps in a desktop PC, notebooks usually do not have a slot free to install SSDs internally. If you have a notebook, check if it has USB 3.0. If not please forget it.
The installation should be a thing of just a few minutes by a competent person. If you feel less fit, ask in the shop you buy the SSD, they usually offer installation too.
Then deinstall DDO where you have it now and reinstall DDO on the new internal drive.
If you have a notebook with USB 3.0, buy an external SSD drive. They are usually better than your normal hard disk drive, but do not provide the same speed an internal drive would offer. Make sure this to be real USB 3.0, both on notebook and SSD drive side. In case of doubt, ask your experts at the shop selling the SSD.

In related computer advice, please also know that sometimes hard drives die. If they die and the only place that you have something saved that you care about is on that one hard drive, then you no longer have that thing.
If you care about some piece of data (whether it's a song, a game or a picture or a doctoral dissertation), keep copies of it in multiple places. All of those computers/hard drives may die at some point, but they're unlikely to die at the same time.

I was having those loading problems. Installing onto an actual SSD drive worked wonders. It's super fast now.
You should buy a Seagate ST32140 (http://redhill.net.au/d/54.php). It is an external 500 GB SSD with high performance, yet very inexpensive, you can find it at around $50 in any tech store.
Once you have installed your game on this drive, tell us how fast it goes.

Not SSD related but this preload doohicky fixed the agonizingly slow - must double log to get in the game - problem on my old slow PC.

I'm not sure what people get out of this sort of trolling. You posted a link to a 2Gb IDE drive from the late 90s. It is not:
External
500Gb
SSD
high-performing
available in any tech store
Normally I wouldn't feed this inane BS but I'm posting because I'm still not convinced the OP understands what constitutes a solid state drive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ssd), and I'd hate to see him spend $40 on eBay only to find out some clown was yanking his chain.

Ignore that guy.
Look here: http://www.newegg.com/SSDs/Category/ID-119
There are How-To Guides and FAQ's for you to get up to speed on what an SSD Drive actually is and how to install it if you must. Otherwise, spend a little extra time and money to find a local computer store to do it.
Any drive you buy will very clearly state that it is a Solid State Drive (SSD) if it is. If it doesn't, it's not.

OP;
A lot of good advice in this thread, but a few lemons too, so be careful :)
Before your next paycheck, you can also run DDO on a 16gb usb flash drive, and it runs great from there.
You never need to re-install DDO, you can simply copy the files wherever you want. In fact, you can even maintain a couple copies of DDO installations. For example, I have a copy of it on my hard drive as well as memory stick on my older PC. Each copy needs to be maintained separately (meaning when there's a game update, you need to patch each copy, which is automatic anyway) but the bonus is that there is only one set of configuration files/settings on your PC, located in your My Documents folder. So regardless of where you run DDO from, you'll always have the same settings used on your PC.
The advantage of maintaining a few copies of the game is mainly because if something happens to your usb stick install, or you lose your stick, or if it gets fubared somehow, you would have an up to date and maintained version on your hard drive that you can copy over to another stick, or external ssd drive, or wherever.
Just another option for you.

FWIW, two years ago (I think) I bought a 512GB Crucial m4 SSD, and I love it! I installed it into my MacBook Pro, and it was like I had a new machine. Standard laptop drive just plain suck. I think the m4 is discontinued. The m500 is the current model.

What do you take from the reaction of the OP?
You tell someone "go buy this new cool thing", you provide them with a link that says the thing is actually old and useless, they say "thank you I'll buy this".
That's not how a normal person would react. The OP is a troll.
Thanks for your input, Mr ForumPaladin

The flash drive is my prefered solution. DDO runs great from mine.
