[INDENT]Well I dread working on completionist. With a laptop I can play most melee's and rogue toons very well. But I have noticed hot bar Intensive toons like monks are a pain In the ass on a laptop. And I am so used to playing rogue/melee styles I really dread changing my playstyle to spellcaster.As being I just don't get Into this style.
So any advice on how to learn how to play toons that you are not used to or comfortable with would be appreciated.

Just do 6/6/6 class splits, doing the first 6/6 in the two classes you like most and then the other 8 for the TR credit. Some cases you can do 7/7/6, just check out the TR order (i.e. barbarian gets priority over monk if both levels are equal)

You will either have to play the split to level hated classes or learn to use the hotkeys. Most classes, when played effectively, will use lots of keys. Even a barbarian will be switching between trips and several cleaves, etc.

The trick when limited by space is to assign a hotkey to toolbars that are not visible. Clever use of ctrl key or alt or even ctrl+alt can open up new key commands that you don't need the hotbar showing to use them.

Another alternative is to use the ctrl+{number} and set up hotbars based on tasks.

Such as moves to use while in a particular stance.

There are some in this game that actually play with no UI showing or even with minimal UI. Creative use of Keyboard and even game pads helps.

As a completionist myself the most annoying aspect about the TR process is dumping your reincarnation cache and resetting your hotbars.

The fact we have no index for our Reincarnation cache, a way to sort alphabetically or by item type, or a way to delete items from the cache is a pain in the ***. Aside from that it is not hard. Regrading leveling monks - don't bother with your attacks/finishes. It is a major pain. Throw your stances on a hotbar, default to earth for 99% of the time and you are good to go. The other monk attacks/finishes are a waste of clicks that do not matter as things die easily enough considering you are playing the most powerful class in the game.

Spellcasters do take up a lot of hotbars. I typically roll with 4 horizontal hotbars in two columns next to each other and find that gets me through up to epic content just fine. Put your most used spells up on top maybe strong offensive spells in one hotbar while you reserve the top one next to it for self healing/scrolls/wands/SLA's.

Wow. That's some of the worst advice I've read in a while. Did you stone your way to completionist?

1. fists of light
2. fists of iron
3. quivering palm
4. stunning fist
5. earth strikes

Seriously if you're not making good use of atleast 3 of those abilities often, you're playing a monk badly.

Also, Earth stance is pretty useless before level 12, get a set of jidz tet bracers and roll in fire stance until you can umd heal scrolls.

For myself, I treat monk just like any other melee class. They have more special attacks available, but you aren't at all required to use those special attacks. And at early levels, you're not going to have enough ki to be able to use the finishing moves most of the time anyway, so it doesn't much matter.

As for spellcasters, I can't imagine playing a spellcaster without having a mouse available. I do a lot of WASD maneuvering with all of my characters, but there are a lot of spells that benefit from being aimed between enemies instead of just using the hard targeting on the keyboard. Spellcasters do absoultely require some getting used to. I wasn't actually good at playing a Wizard until part way through my second life with one. Now I love it.

All of those are very good abilities. I especially love stunning fist. The generic elemental attacks and finishers aren't all that important compared to just having decent-ish handwraps that are appropriate to what you're attacking (i.e. breaking DR if needed) and knowing how to move around as a melee in order to reduce incoming damage.

Don't worry about the attacks and finishes. Add them as you get comfortable and you'll do fine. Monks are more complicated than other melee classes, but you don't have to add all of that complication at once.

Yes you can. The poster meant 6/6/8.

I think Grim was referring tot he elemental attacks you get by default.

I do wish the monks had something better for their moves, since they are fickle about how they tie together. Like you could pick a finishing move and it would auto add the required moves into your attack chain. Or make those moves offer more, since it is true, they are not the best moves to use; yet take serious dedication to utilize them to their full potential.

Uska's post could have been clearer, but the "can't do that" was referring to mixing barbarian and monk, which is impossible due to alignment restrictions.

Monk is a joke. Stunning fist, quivering palm and done. Finishing moves are not necessary nor are elemental strikes. This is not a challenging class to play in any way.

You could purchase a usb keyboard, or even a usb gaming keyboard. I love my old logitech G11, Tons of extra keys and can record macros.

/ui layout save <name>

/ui layout load <name>

One less thing to worry about.
TR cache lag is still the most annoying, though.

Just an fyi; if you name a layout and you misspell it when you attempt to load, it will fail and you won't be able to reload it until you relog (or quit the game).

Another reason to get a gaming keyboard that records macros. Ill have a custom layout for each toon, recallable with one button!

If he hates the class, he probably DOES play it badly. So what? He is only playing it in order to get a PL, and is making it as simple for himself as possible.

If I ever want a monk past life badly enough to suffer through leveling a monk, I probably will do same thing.

If your laptop has a numpad, try this setup. It works excellently.

USB mouse
plus key (numpad) as modifier

mod+keyrow 1-9 is hotbars 1-9
mod+0 is hotbar 10

mod+numpad 1-9 is hotbars 11-19
mod+numpad 0 is hotbar 20

For starters, never have all your hotbars on your screen at once and click things. You WILL hit the wrong button at a crucial moment and die, I don't care how the EE soloers say you should do it. Next, use mouselook. T key. Easily react to new threats, better circle strafing/kiting, etc.

Dump your main abilities on keys 1-6, according to use. Potions on 7 and 8 (I use Cure items on 7, Haste on 8.). 9 and 0 are Toggles/rarely used/long cooldown, like Power Attack or Abundant Step. In other words, out-of-battle abilities, because you'll never hit these in combat. Be prepared to accidentally press ability number 2 by accident when going for W. Your main bar is 1, go to 2, 3, etc as you need space. All your buffs go on 20, going to 11, 12, etc as you need room

I've never gone past hotbar 14 for buffs or 5 for attacks. The only reason I went to 14 was that I was playing a druid, which has an obscene amount of buffs. Only class I got to 5 on was a monk, and that was because for each bar, I only changed 2 or 3 abilities. My finisher would stay 4, my Fists of Darkness stays 5, my Stunning Fist would stay 2. All I would change is my elemental strikes and whether Quivering Palm, Sap, or Touch of Death goes on 6.

The great thing about using + as the mod key is that, with a little dexterity, you can change hotbars while holding the left mouse button down.

I used to find Monks a nightmare but now I generally use the following keyboard set up for hotbar 1:

1 = Stunning Fist.
2 = Unbalancing Strike.
3 = Cleave.
4 = Great Cleave.
5 = Quivering Palm.
6 = Dismissing Strike.
7 = Tomb of Jade.
8 = Fists of Light.
9 = Smite Tainted Creature.
0 = Generic Finisher.

Most of the time I use the first 4, the rest are situational only.

Yah I should have used a comma or something to make myself clearer.
