View Full Version : Why I don't PUG (much)

FAQ

Because I'm bad at this game. There, I said it!

Don't get me wrong, I love this game, I have been playing for almost 4 years, and yet, I'm still not good at it. Sometimes I get lucky streaks, and that's when I decide to PUG, and it all goes FUBAR (well not always, but many times).

The reason that made me post this was because as soon as I logged on today, I got a tell from a player asking for help running Undermine. I don't know if he was a new player or not, but he was not a TR. I was feeling kind of uber at the moment on my WF sorc blowing stuff up, so I decide to help out. He was level 17, which meant no BB, but I didn't really care.

He asked if I could do traps. I said no, but that we didn't need to. I said I would "show him a way" because I imagined he was talking about the minefield.

So we get to the minefield, I blow up the initial mines to the corner, I cast jump on us both and we're off. Well, I bet you already figured this out, but I fall, and die, shamefully. I fall, not on a long jump, but on a silly little hop.

Actually, we all die there, but he dies after he crosses the minefield. I think he used a rez cake on me and we're off again.

Boulder time. I say: "I'm gonna pull the boulder". I cast hast and displacement, run off past trash and trigger the boulder and start running back. I get hit with a Cyclonic Blast and am on my back as the boulder squashes me to death...

This is a recurring case with me. Here are some examples:

- Fvs life running Brothers of the Forge (just as it came out): leader says to do it on EN, I say: "We can do it on EH, it's easy" (cause I had just soloed on EH). Result: I got gangbanged by those little scorpions and died.

- Monk life and The Pit on elite BB: I say I can do the furnace rooms (having soloed this every life...). Result: I get melted by acid jets

- Also monk life and Crucible swim: I say "I can do the swim, I have improved evasion and high reflexes". Result: blades slice me when I try to swim into the room

- Wizard life: VON5 and someone falls in the lava. I say I can jump down, grab stone and cast DDoor. Result: DDoor fizzles on first try. Lava ends up killing me.

- Sorc life running VON4: To save time I say I can cast DDoor. Result: Locked out of quest

- Fighter life Running hard Shroud for mats: I finish puzzle fast and go help break crystals to get into pool room. Result: I break the wrong frikkin crystals and loose underwater chests!!! (and no, not my first shroud).

I swear, in PUGs I feel like Bad Luck Brian (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/bad-luck-brian). Maybe that could be my Forum Title. Bad Luck PUG Brian...

TL;DR: I don't PUG much because I suck (in groups) and would rather spare people from my bad luck.

Just needed to get that off my chest. Thx

You are not the only one!

Back when the level cap was 20 I was healing Epic Devil Assault. On the last boss I when to switch to Heal scrolls for the tank and accidently used a Word of Recall scroll instead.

I'm wondering why I'm suddenly in House D as I hear *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding*.

I'm pretty sure someone in that group burst a blood vessel resisting the urge not to scream profanities at me.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a game! Learn from your mistakes and try to do better next time:)

I'm glad. It also makes me laugh when I look back at the trail of destruction I have left, but not when it happens... :)

Lol, that's what I try to do, but I usually end up putting my foot in my mouth. I'm just glad most people are cool about my mess-ups (except that Shroud group)

Best pugging solution: run in and die right away. 5 other people go "whew I wasn't the first" and everyone has fun.

If one person gets salt on his chapped arse and starts up some ruckus about his bonus you lost, boot that guy & find a better person to fill his slot.

Simpler performance anxiety. Don't put so much pressure on yourself, enjoy the time instead.

Bah, if you PUG a shroud, kiss the water chest goodbye and be glad if you get it.

Yes, I believe you are right. But I do enjoy my time PUGgging. In that case with the monk dying in the Crucible Swim, we had a bet going if the cleric would be able to get further than I had gotten :)

Well, actually, I have only lost the water chest about 3-4 times in all my runs. And I only PUG shrouds, since my guild is tiny.

I've lost it twice, neither was my fault.. Even so, assume it's going bye bye. No idea why people get annoyed when they lose it anyway, doesn't everyone have thousands of medium ings by now?

Edit: Your filter sucks turbine. Get rid of it.

I can relate to this so much. I do still PUG fairly often, but there are certain things I won't do. Basically anything where there's a good chance the whole group is going to be relying on just me. E.g., I never group for Crucible on a rogue life. I never group for Coal Chamber . . . ever (I swear I get overconfident and wind up falling down one of the shafts at least half the time). When I'm playing a divine, I barely PUG at all -- I hate being expected to heal, because I'm bad at it and I feel terrible when I let someone die.

I also have an unfortunate tendency to get overconfident in groups like you described. Just because I can easily solo something on elite when I'm invisizerging or going slow or when I'm feeling lazy and pop a hireling healer, I shouldn't expect to have as easy a time in a chaotic BYOH group with no scaling.

I'm not terrible, and I'm certainly better than the average person in my PUGs, but I'm definitely not one of the game's elite players. And it's just so embarrassing to fail badly when I feel like I should be a lot better than I am.

Yes, this, exactly :) Thanks for sharing.

I got disoriented and did the same thing once. We should group up sometime so if it happens again I can blame it on you :)

I had a similar thing happen with teleport. I accidentally hit the "+" sign, which changed my quick slots up one, so when I thought I was about to FOD I instead tp'd to the portable hole.
