Coming back after about 3 years away. Seem to spend more time being disconnected than actually playing. Never had anything like this issue before. Is this just the way things are now??

Is this just the way things are now??Not in my experience. There'd also be a much bigger outcry on the forums were this the case. Time to troubleshoot your connection, methinks.

No, I never get disconnected. And I am seriously saying that. What specs are you using for your machine and internet connection?
I run a 8 core workstation with 8 gigs of ram, a old rendering video card, and have cable internet on one of the lowest packages (3mb up/12mb down) and have had no problem with ddo disconnecting outside of server crashes.

Please check your game program version. After 3 years maybe you will want to get a clean new install. Otherwise, please check if the connection timeout is a startup thing - try the DDO preloader. Perhaps this solves the problem.

I have been having a problem for weeks now where after ~10 minutes of logging into another server, the client just closes without any warning. I can duplicate this problem.

Does your firewall allow Turbine, Awesomium, and Akamai Netsession_win.exe?
I log in and out of the game successfully mutliple times per day currently(until Monday April 7 then I can go back to running quests) and I have no problems such as you state.
One time recently I had the game crash and just go back to the Windows Screen. Nothing whatsoever, just completely went away. And that time was before March 10.

I have similar problems. I usually have to log on about 3 times before I stay logged on and if I am not careful, my laptop shuts down in the middle of quests due to overheating. I have a cooling pad on order that should be in sometime in the next several days.
As for the logging in, I've seen people talking about a preloader to solve this problem. Never heard of it before, where do I find it?

After each and EVERY time i close the ddoclient (rebooting due to changing too many toons, reboot pc due staying on for too long , reboot due to daughter pressing the darn button etc) when i log back in, after 5 to 10mins the game will close without warning.
Sometimes it might disconnect more than once but that is not an every day issue. ALSO game freezes on me quite often but that may have to do with my machine been pre-historic as i stole it from a darn pc-museum back in the 90's....

The past few days DDO has closed on me, or dropped connection, without warning. Dont know if its the game or something on my end.

Please look here for all the necessary information on the preloader (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/420738-How-to-make-the-game-loading-faster-DDOPreload-official?highlight=preloader). Worked perfectly for me.
I cannot promiss that this will cure any midgame timeouts though. For getting your laptop heat down - tried a notebook cooler pad? (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/180-3705881-5956836?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=notebook%20cooler%20pad&sprefix=notebook+cooler+p%2Caps&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anotebook%20cooler%20pad) Worked for mine, an AMD egg and bacon grill ^^.

It seems about one out of every 3 login attempts I get redboxed and disconnect upon login.
Also i ocassionally disconnect after question completion. I was disconnected just now in the Twelve right after I upgraded an augment on a weapon.

My new laptop running Windows 8.1 Pro does this, though sometimes it will stay connected for hours. Roughly half the time it just crashes after about 10 minutes. Also does that annoying disconnect on the first logon each day.
Just installed DDO maybe 6 weeks ago and my laptop is otherwise pristine.
May load the Preload program eventually to see if that helps.
My primary gaming PC is Windows 7 desktop and never has this problem(s).

Please take a look on the Preloader here, too (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/420738-How-to-make-the-game-loading-faster-DDOPreload-official?highlight=preloader).
The red star of death had been a common occurence for me until this fine tool. Alas, it can only be used with the official DDO launcher, except for some hassle. I use DDO ML by first starting the preloader, canceling the agreement with Akamai and then starting DDO ML. Works fine, but is a hassle doing this every time...

Already use the preloader. It helps but even with it I still disconnect upon login fairly often. Also did a fresh install recently.
I had recently done a fresh install as well... hoping this would help with the red star issue. And since doing the fresh install I have to log in 3 times every time I want to play. First is always the stupid red star... second time I am usually booted without anything popping up game just closes out full. Third time is when it usually allows me to stay on... which if I knew I would have these issues I wouldn't have ever done a fresh install on the game since before the fresh install it was only the red star issue.

I haven't really had any serious lag or discos for about 3 months or so. But I'm not running Epic stuff right now and heroic quests are a ghosttown.

Does this involve running multiple clients windowed? I never used to disconnect anywhere (after I bought a decent PC) but recently I have found that running multiple clients (my 2 FtP accounts) along my main account will cause a crash frequently. It actually seem like the game considers one of the account dormant and times it out and at that point closes all open clients. A "fun" version of this is that it even if I have my FtP accounts online shortly and then closes it down, my main account will crash about the same time as it would if the FtP client was online.
All of this never happens if I only run my main account.
Best of luck finding the problems.
