View Full Version : If this is working as intended - why do I feel like I've been scammed?
I won two separate auctions for jeweled cloaks on the shard exchange. These are exclusive items. I already have one so I put my existing one in my character bank. I opened my mail and got the first one I had won and transferred it to my shared bank without any problem.
I opened my mail to get the second one and it immediately became bound-to-character (BTC) without me equipping it and without any confirmation prompt.
Contacted out-of-game and in-game support. They told me this is working as intended. Pointed me to http://www.ddo.com/en/update-17-patch-1-release-notes. This is such an absolutely screwed-up 'gotcha'. What kind of logic justifies calling this 'working as intended' and how on earth are you supposed to know about this behavior before hand?
This just sucks. Been playing since 2006. Had plenty of good experiences with support. Utterly underwhelmed with Turbine today.

have you been away from DDO for months? this is exactly how ASAH works since its introduction. RT(F)M.

I have bought many many items on the shard exchange. This is the first time an item has become BTC the instant I opened the auction mail. I had just thirty seconds earlier opened an auction mail with another of the same item and it did not do this. I was able to transfer it to my shared bank just like every other time I've bought a BTCoE item. (RTF-OP).

Your previous items had probably not already been equipped i.e. they had not bound to anyone yet and the status doesn't change when using the shard exchange. The last item had been equipped by the previous owner I assume and again its startus doesn't change when transferred so it became immediately bound to you once you opened the mail.
You can, of course, sell it on again using the shard exchange and hopefully get your shards back that way.

Was it btc when it was put on asah?

Items that were previously bound when bought on the Shard Auction House will bind on acquire.
Look at the item on the AH and you will see a difference in the Binding Text, the ones that are not previously bound will have only one bind message, if it has multiple messages then it was previously bound.

I agree with the others. Looks like you bought one that someone else already equipped.

This is why I think I'm having such a tough time with support on this. The issue revolves around the exclusivity of the items. The knee-jerk reaction is to assume the binding state was already BTC. Both of the cloaks I bought were BTCOE (I so wish I had screen-shotted that now). The bug is that when I have an exclusive item in my character bank and in my shared bank and then acquire another one (BTCOE!) the game logic somehow decided that this new one had to instantly become BTC.

I find it rather notable that your statement to read the manual directs the user to a community driven system of documentation, not an actual manual by Turbine. Because, were one to read any official manual on how the game works we'd be wondering things like why we aren't getting auto-crits on paralyzed mobs.
So yes, the documentation exists for how the ASAH works. That doesn't detract from the reality that its a system prone to customer dissatisfaction. And the in-game documentation for systems like this and others are still error prone or missing key elements forcing one to rely on community driven documentation (if one knows that its a requirement which is not everyone).
Also, since its my nature to do so, XKCD has a comic on this topic of when there is a system designed such that it needs manuals like this.

Both items are still BTCOE, but one of them also says "Bound to Character" on a totally different line in the item description.
The bind status is 4 lines above the binding mechanism.
Here is an example:
It says Bound to Character on the 3rd line.
It says Bound to Character on Acquire on the 7th line.
You need to check the status of BOTH lines to when purchasing the item. They will both say BTCOE but one will also say BTC on a different line.
I hope this clears things up.

Edit:
TLDR: You purchased an item that was already bound, which is why you can not move it to bank. It has nothing to do with exclusivity.

Maybe not be right but it has been talked about in the forums before they should make it clear on the shard auction house

I had this happen - I posted it for a low price - switched to an alt and purchased it.
You need to be quick - minor loss due to AH % - but best work around I have found.
Thank you for your replies all. I appreciate the detail on recognizing BTC versus BTCOE. I have been burned before so I look for that but I have to admit that I could have missed it in the rush to buy two of these items at the same time. I think I will test with some less costly exclusive items. Not sure why this is bugging me so much but still feeling very much scammed by a a bug or a systematically designed 'gotcha'. Probably time for a DDO break.
If you accidentally doubled clicked the item it will equip it on you instead of selecting something to be moved - I've done this with potions a couple of times.
