View Full Version : Feats for Dwarf Radiant Titan

For my next heroic life, I'm planning a combination of Sirgog's Radiant Titan (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/427304-Radiant-Titan-revisited-Clr17-Pal2-Ftr1-melee-healing-spec) and an idea I got from a friend. It's basically a Dwarf Radiant Titan with near max Con to take advantage of the Throw Your Weight Around enhancement. I won't qualify for Overwhelming Critical, so I'm planning to try out the dragonmark to play with Radiant Forcefield. In what order should I take the following feats:
LD: Warding (have to take at lvl 1?)
Power Attack (have to take at lvl 2 as fighter bonus)
Empower Healing
Maximize
Quicken
Cleave
Great Cleave
THF
ITHF
GTHF
IC: S
I'm not sure I'll ever run this in epic levels, as I may just TR her again at 20th. I'm thinking of pushing the metamagics, except maybe Empower Healing, to last in case I skip epics. Either way, I have some tough choices to make. Help!

I've been toying with TYWA builds and my conclusion is it's not worth it on any build with easy access to Div Might; esp. not if you're sacrificing Overwhelming Crit. You have to spend at least 18 APs into dwarf tree to get TYWA, which really hamstrings what else you can take; vs 4 APs in Warpriest for a decent-sized boost to DPS. OTOH, I like the idea of a dwarven Titan with Radiant Forcefield, so good luck with that. :)

imo Divine might is incredibly overrated its a short term buff that can only be used a few time a day. On the other hand TYWA is permanent allows you to really crank up the Con values and the weapon range is actually pretty wide (picks, axes and hammers)
Unrelated to the OP an Occult Slayer Dwarven Barbarian would be fun since rage duration is based on Con and their Capstone would give them a MASSIVE SR give those Drow something to whine about.
All I know is TYWA has me actually looking at making a cleric Tank next time our group reincarnates. Con/Wis based. Probably a multi-class
@OP if you don't plan on playing in epics don't sweat not qualifying for OWC since it's an epic feat :)

Not on a cleric or favored soul, which is what he's talking about here. Divine Might these days is powered by SP and lasts 2 minutes. With reasonable CHA, it's an incredible boost to DPS and tactics DCs.
We all make mistakes, but I think it's a bit irresponsible to give strongly worded advice like that without at least checking the wiki.

While I do agree with Unbongwah that TYWA is a suboptimal choice, the flavor of this build idea is really cool and I'm definitely not going to discourage it.
As for the order to take the feats, my preference is to get power attack, cleave, great cleave, and improved critical as early as you possibly can (meaning, as early as you qualify for them based on BAB). They each make a huge difference to a melee build's effectiveness. Everything else can be pushed a bit later. I haven't put this together in the planner, so I'm not sure exactly what the levels would be, but it should be pretty straightforward for you to do.
It would be nice to have Maximize by the time you get Blade Barrier. I know you'll primarily be melee, but any build with this many cleric levels is going to be BB kiting and using Divine Punishment at times. You'll probably want Quicken by the time you get Mass Heal, if not earlier.
The THF line is useful, but it can be pushed later without sacrificing anything too major compared to the rest.

On my paladins, I usually have at least 10-12 TUs to power DM, so that's 20-24 mins., more than enough for most quests. On a cleric/FvS, it's 25 SPs every 2 mins.; compared to how much all your divine spells chew up your SP bar, that's nothing, IMHO. :)
On the other hand TYWA is permanent allows you to really crank up the Con values and the weapon range is actually pretty wide (picks, axes and hammers)
OP is going THF, which means he's stuck w/greataxes & mauls. Plenty of axes to choose from, of course, but the number of named mauls that are worthwhile is pretty slim.
Plus like I said, going for TYWA essentially commits you to spend at least 18 APs in the dwarf tree; that hamstrings your build's flexibility. [Although if OP really intends to take Gtr DM, that's already 12 APs, so...] And let's not forget TYWA only applies to dmg, not to to-hit or tactics DCs, so it's not like you're going to ignore STR entirely. And what does going CON-based really get you: some more HPs & higher Fort saves? How much does that really matter?

OP -- what tomes do you have on this? And based on the "next heroic life" bit in the first post -- is this a 36 point build?
I'm intrigued enough now that I want to try putting it together in the planner, and I'd just like to know what you have to work with.

As far as Radiant Forcefield, I was actually considering trying to fit in Extend. The wiki says the dragonmark version has a 1 min cooldown for a 22 sec forcefield. If Extend means I've got 44 sec of every minute with 25% damage reduction...

+5 Con, +4 everything else, 36 pt build. Ideally I'd have all three pally lives done, but I want to hit completionist before I start repeating lives.

As far as Radiant Forcefield, I was actually considering trying to fit in Extend. The wiki says the dragonmark version has a 1 min cooldown for a 22 sec forcefield. If Extend means I've got 44 sec of every minute with 25% damage reduction...
Isn't divine might redundant with TYWA? The CHA bonus goes to STR not damage

Unfortunately, both the duration & CD for Radiant Forcefield (http://ddowiki.com/page/Radiant_Forcefield) is fixed; so Extend does nothing. :( In fact, if the Gtr DM has only a 1 min CD, you can spam it in faster succession than the actual spell!

Yep, this is correct. Divine Might is useless for TYWA dwarf builds because divine might post enhancement pass is a bonus to STR, it is no longer a bonus to damage.
I've come to the same conclusion as above...TYWA isn't worth it for a battle cleric. But hey, nobody says you have to min/max so go for it if you wish.

Technically, Div Might & other STR bonuses are still of some use to a TYWA build, b/c it boosts your to-hit & tactics DCs. But I fail to see what the OP thinks he's gaining by having both; why make a battlecleric more MAD by worrying about CON on top of STR, CHA, and WIS?
Also, I recommend taking Emp Heal NLT lvl 12, b/c it's the only metamagic which boosts RS aura.

The OP thinks he forgot that DM is an insightful Str bonus, and therefore useless. I can get the same bonus from epic gear at no cost in precious AP. I'll probably rejigger enhancements to go Kensai instead.
Also, I recommend taking Emp Heal NLT lvl 12, b/c it's the only metamagic which boosts RS aura.
This is the kind of feedback I was looking for. Though, assuming I get to TYWA as quickly as possible, I won't get RS aura until 15.

Some comments:
I think it's a bit better for playability to get Heal and Blade Barrier early than to get the paladin saves. I never really feel like I need super high saves until around elite Gianthold anyway.
Enhancements are very similar, but I can't live without haste boost on a melee. (I took Divine Might, too -- it's not super useful for this build, but you need 22 APs in Warpriest and it's arguably the best option. Could move 2 points out of Divine Might into Charisma, reducing it's duration to 30 seconds if you find that you don't use it.) Obviously these can and should be respecced at any time, so not much to say here.
Like you, I couldn't find a way to fit the THF feats. You could probably live without Quicken and Maximize in heroics, but Empower Healing is essential for a cleric; and if you can't take all 3 THF feats, it's probably not worth taking 2. (Even without the THF feats being backloaded, I'd still rather be able to drop Quickened/Maximized Blade Barriers than improve melee DPS a bit anyway -- even with trash DCs, Blade Barrier is a room clearer in the mid to upper heroics.)
You definitely want Empower Healing by the time you hit level 12, for the aura.
All in all, I think it's a pretty interesting build. Probably less effective than the human version -- I doubt the survivability benefit of increased CON and radiant forcefield outweighs the human's healing amp, and the human STR-based version taking advantage of divine might will definitely do more DPS. But despite that, it's a flavorful alternative that I really don't think would be too broken.

I'm really glad you posted this. I agree that it makes a lot of sense to hit the best cleric spells before taking the paladin levels, so that is what I am doing. So far, I like the build, but it does feel a little on the weak side, since I haven't hit TYWA yet. It's also a bit of a trade off, because I could probably use the extra attack bonus from the pally levels this early on.

Cool! I hope you report back later on as well to let us all know how it works (or doesn't). And yeah, this definitely seems like it would be a huge pain until you get the better spells. Now I'm wondering if it wouldn't have been better to go with Maximize early and spec it initially as a caster cleric (Divine Disciple, using the SLAs) until you get TYWA.

It works out just fine for melee at low levels. By the time I started really wanting TYWA, I had it. I maybe could have taken the dragonmark later, but I needed the AP spent to get higher up the tree, so...
All in all, it's working fine. Elite traps suck, but what can you do without evasion?

I just hit level 16 on this guy, and it has been one of the easiest lives I've played. Even with dumped WIS blade barriers still rock, though I'm so use to melee I sometimes forget to use it.
My only complaint is that I'm pretty disappointed in the dragonmark. The Radiant Forcefield is pretty awesome, but unnecessary. The Spell Resist and Neutralize Poison are convenient, but also unnecessary. I'll probably swap out the dragonmark for Empower Spell. I won't get IS: Slash until 18; but I'm also still swinging a Carnifex because I didn't craft a GS axe last life, so it would be irrelevant anyway.

You may wish to farm up a ML:16 Cannith g.axe (http://ddowiki.com/page/Elemental_Greataxe_of_Fire) or an E-star Cormyrian g.axe. Apart from GS, they're probably your best options until you hit epic lvls.

You could also check the auction house if you don't want to grind...while I'm not too familiar with heroic weapons these days they did bring back weapons with multiple burst effects on them so you might find something worthwhile. I would think definitely something better than a carnifex at level 16.

Sometimes I miss Shade/Axer . . . currently there's no one to (wrongly) say:
There's nothing better than a Carnifex at level 16!!!

I managed to snag an elite Greataxe of the Chained Soldier on my first try in Tor, and I'm happy with that. I don't have much farther to go to hit cap, so I should be good for now.
P.S. I slotted a Ruby Eye of the Inferno, because I don't need Devotion at this point. Boy, is that sucker underwhelming...
