I think a lot of folks are overreacting about the Akamai software. Everyday whether you know it or not information is being uploaded to the Utah facility to store information and metadata on you. If you are using any version of Windows operating system your information has already been sold out. If you use Twitter, Facebook, Skype, Twitter or any social media, then files are constantly being uploaded. KEYWORD=Uploaded. If you have a cell phone, well again information on you is being UPLOADED and sent to various places. Whether it be the NSA, FBI, CIA or PRISM to name a few. Your little user friendly software that you "think" detects spyware and the such is designed NOT to detect govware that runs in the background. So no matter what softwar your using to detect it your not even going to know its even there. And not only that you have Drones flying around your Neighborhood and some of these are as small as a insect. I know this because I'm the guy that's controlling some of them (drones).
So stop your complaining and be a good little sheople, download the darn thing let it do it's job and You enjoy the game.
Have a Wonderful day :)

Fascinating. Tell me more of what the USA is doing in my country. Are you using your Drones to hunt drop-bears?

...its NOT over-reacting, the stuff is known spyware. This isn't even open for debate, this is not opinion, the stuff is spyware. I dunno why people don't get that.

You're wrong and I'ma tell you why.

Tinfoil isn't made from tin at all, it's made from aluminum.

You think that's a coincidence? It ain't.

They know what's going on, and they know we're on to them!

Evidence that this is spyware? I haven't found any yet. And I have been searching. All I see is paranoid people on multiple game forums and yahoo answers saying this company is the devil, and not a single one has anything to go off of.

Witch hunts begin with misunderstandings. Akamai is not a full blown spyware. Its a distribution software. Heck they even distribute bulk data to NASA.

But I guess you will have some people who doesn't mind sitting at their computer for 3 hours waiting for a download to finish, while all at the same time they are paying for internet connection. But God forbid Turbine uses a software to speed up that process.

This is one of those cases where it really helps to be jaded and paranoid, like me ;)

I assume that pretty much everywhere (on the Internet) I go and everything I do is being monitored, recorded, categorized and sold/distributed to as many parties as possible. Accordingly, things like DDO using Akami just simply don't bother me. Why? I have nothing on my box that I would consider sensitive or valuable. No financial info (I only use a Pre-paid CC for online transactions, if anyone gets that CC number it hurts me not - there's no funds there to steal, no liability for me from fraud), no personal info. If they want to know what games I play, porn I watch or sites I visit they're welcome to the info... It hurts me how? One of my (many) junk email addresses get spammed with carp? Lol like that doesn't happen already - it's what junk addresses are for. I have zero relationships with social media, so no personally identifiable info available from those sources either.

My only concerns are as follows:
• Does it impact my computers' performance? - I don't mean in the "technically yes, everything has some impact" sense but rather in the "am I actually noticing the impact by usage, not just because some resource monitor says there's an impact" sense.

If the answer is "yes" then I wipe the nuisance and avoid it in the future. If the answer is "no" then I honestly don't care. I use no resource consuming anti-virus, firewall, spy/ad/mal/etc-ware checker - and I rarely have issues. When a problem (virus, w/e) arises, I do a reinstall of OS and DDO and I'm good to go.

Privacy in the modern (and especially online) world is at best an illusion, at worst a self-delusion; have nothing to steal, and you won't fear thieves; always assume "they" are watching, so it won't be a shock when you find out "they" really are. Big Brother is real!

I don't know why people don't get ^that.^

Spelling mistakes aside your opinion is exactly that - your opinion. I would explain why you are wrong, but after reading that you play a pure paladin on Cannith I do not see the point. Carry on.

OP, You mention the FBI and NSA among others and while government agencies are of concern, a greater concern is criminals and what companies and their employees (with or without company permission) do with my data.

25 years ago we bought something from a company through the mail. At the time we received ads from the company every few months. Ten years ago we started getting email from the company even though we never purchased anything else from them or gave them our email address. It seems that they bought a bunch of personal information and matched one to our street address. This is just one example in my life where my personal information has been sold to someone else.

I regularly get phone calls from companies I have never heard of, much less done business with, even though I am on the US national DO NOT CALL list. When I ask them, they tell me they bought my information from some company, but since they buy information from so many places they have no idea who it was. Some of these companies even keep calling after I have told them to put me on their company DO NOT CALL list.

I don't use Twitter, Facebook or a lot of other social media sites because they tell you up front they well/trade your personal information to say nothing of employees who do so without permission. I had a friend who had access to the personal information of everyone who had a Mervyn's credit card and when he had some free time at work he would look up famous names.

Then there are companies like Target who make little effort to safeguard personal information from hackers (if they did, the computer with your personal information would not be connected directly to the internet.)

This is coming from someone who has been the victim of identity theft at least 4 times!

Theres a difference between having a locked door with a security guard posted -vs- propping the door wide open for everyone.

Ah yes, Forgive me I had not thought about the grammar police. Again forgive me from posting from an iphone with buttons that like to stick or just not react to respond to touch at all. As for playing a pure build Paladin, What is wrong with that?

Tin foil doesn't work anymore. They put rfid chips in reynolds wrap.

When I was young we used to peel the foil off gum wrappers. Thanks to this specialized training I was able take some tin foil apart.

I took the rfid chips and put them in the TV room. I played some porn and had a recording of a girls voice that occasionally shouted out "Oh, Hoglum!"

Now the NSA thinks I'm a total stud.

Remember those agents that got fired? They were listening to my fake life. Nobody is paying any attention to the rest of you so you're safe.

I've have to maintain this image though somehow. There's a downside to everything & if I don't live up to their expectations there's a black helicopter waiting out there for me.

The girl I paid to say "Oh Hoglum" recently blackmailed me and said she'd tell the NSA my wild life was fabricated.

Now I'm out a lot of money. I suppose the moral of the story is: be paranoid. Of everyone.

You are now 0 for 2 for using an iPhone and for your original post. Please stop posting and return to your high school studies. You have a long road ahead of you and making saddles to go on drones is a challenging career path.
