Stealth nerf to hirelings?

Last night I was running Splinterskull chain with a hireling. Recalled into Tangleroot after the next-to-last quest (Doom of the Witch-doctor), and few seconds later I get message "Storm has expired" -- or something to that effect, I do not remember exact words. Poof, Storm is gone.

Until now, if a hireling's contract expired while in quest or wilderness, they stayed with you until you recalled to public area. Now only in quests? Or worse, not at all?

They must of started a union and imposed work stoppage rules, poor hirelings were not getting overtime pay and being taken advantage of sounds like. :)

Was your hireling set to not move? If your hireling isn't mobile when you leave a quest, they stay in the quest. And when the quest instance times out, the hireling poofs out with it.

It's likely what Nibor said. I had no issues with Natasha in multiple quests last night, including when she expired mid-quest.

Not only Storm was mobile, he took it upon himself to smash Zulkash's pillar while I was killing the last hobgoblin, and thus Storm actually completed the quest for me. He did recall with me.

Tonight I will check if any of my toons has a hireling near expiration, and will test them in some Wilderness area

My reaction to Storm's contract expiring would be "Sweet, now I can get a competent hireling".

Did he say "Voice of the Master" before smashing the pillar?

Ive had that happen several times over the years. Usually he was set to stand still after i exited, but sometimes there was no apparent reason. Might be a rarely occurring bug of some kind or other.

It wasn't unusual for one of mine to get stuck in a quest like that, regardless of if they're on follow or not. Now I always manually click the follow button (the two foot silhouettes) to make sure they load into my instance before they poof away on accident. Never had a problem when doing that.
