Please be aware that if you had trouble installing the latest update and went directly to Akamai to install their netsession service as a workaround, that their version is different than the DDO version.
I am not sure if a subsequent run of DDO will then replace the netsession service. Their version is of course the full client, with person to person, while DDO has a special disabled one.

The difference is in single statement when downloading:

Turbine does:

https://client.akamai.com/conf/install.html?file=installer&upload=false&silent=true

The default download of akamai does

https://client.akamai.com/conf/install.html?file=installer&upload=true&silent=false

Changing the upload parameter changes the setting, also the silent parameter controls wither it asks you if you want to install it.

of course that requires belief in that akamai only does what it is supposed to do....

My question,

Since Turbine downloads Netsession_win,exe each and every time you click on DDO, when you run another application that downloads it, what happens if their settings are different? My guess, you get the new settings.

How do I copy tweets?

From DDO Twitter (<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p><a href="https://twitter.com/r_e_s_t_">@r_e_s_t_</a> The client is not using P2P at all, and is not a third party launcher. Please notice the CYA of non-P2P for DDO. No mention of what happens when other applications auto-download and write over your netsession. Since I wrote this I am now looking into this deeper than I wanted.

Just skip the Akamaicarp altogether, and use a 3rd party launcher.... it's what I did.

Uninstalling Akamai does not, in fact, uninstall-- the Windows Registry was still rife with instances of this horrible software.

Going to Control Panel, and using their little "akamai admin" thingy does nothing-- the client is **still** running, even if you click "stop service".

And the files are still there on your PC after an uninstall too! Even worse... they are still running, post-uninstall. I had to nuke the service from Windows Task Manager in order to delete the offensive folder/files.

The Akamai is truly horrid software..

We cannot determine Akamai Netsession's behavior for other software products you might have that utilize it. For example, Adobe uses it for its Creative Suite (digital download), and NFL.com uses it to serve video. AutoDesk also uses it.

However, to reiterate: Peer to Peer has been disabled for DDO, and is not being utilized by the Akamai Netsession service that is installed with the DDO launcher. We are aware that the Akamai EULA discusses things that are not implemented in our version of the client, such as references to utilizing upload speed, but that is not being used for DDO. We are looking into our options in regard to the required EULA text, but the EULA text has to remain intact for now.

Cordovan... what about the users that had to go MANUALLY download akamai because the DDO install wouldn't work? Are we safe and protected by DDO's non-peer-to-peer?

Yes, since the DDO launcher is not requesting peer to peer, it should not be happening in relation to DDO.

What about the rest of my computer? This program starts up with windows NOT with DDO. Is my system secure or is this a method for companies to know things like who I bank with?

EDIT: I read that there is supposed to be a control panel for Akamai to make sure it's upload is set to off, but WHERE would a user find that control? I am not computer savy on that sort of stuff so I am like a blind guy trying to find my way across a street.

Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Akami Netsession Interface Control Panel.

In case you ever want to uninstall Akami again, you'll find instructions here (http://www.akamai.com/html/solutions/client_faq.html). Note: you generally cannot uninstall programms while they are running. So you might need to access the Akami Netsession Interface Control Panel, click the "Preferences" tab on the top and tell it to "Stop" before uninstalling.

Thank you Beethoven. Once you gave me that I opened it up and found that INDEED my akamai was set to ALLOW uploads. I disabled that. SO for anyone that HAD to do manual installation of Akamai.. get in that panel and DISABLE your uploads

I like this answer. Adroitly stated.
