With the update today, Turbine switched to the Akamai download service.

Akamai always starts up with your system, even if you are not using DDO.

Akamai uses your bandwidth, as well as processing power.
This slows down your computer, as well as internet connection.

You have no control over Akamai, except to manually turn it off. (Control Panel/Akamai)
If turned off, it requests you to install it again when you start Turbine launcher.
If you do not agree, you cannot play DDO... it quits the launcher.
This happens *even if there are no updates* to download.

These behaviors are similar to mal-ware activity.

The previous service, Pando Media Booster, did not exhibit these questionable behaviors.

** A temporary, tedious workaround is as follows: **
Disable Akamai from startup at boot time. (Spybot Search and Destroy/Startup Tools can aid with this).
Create a shortcut to Control Panel/Akamai, and place it next to your DDO Launcher.
Before you start DDO Launcher, start Akamai. (under Preferences tab)
Once you get the login display, stop Akamai.
Log in and play DDO as usual.

Basically, you are paying Turbine for a service.
In turn, they have sold you as a product (processing power/bandwidth) to Akamai.
