View Full Version : Dear Devs: Well Done

Not sure if this has been said elsewhere - but c'est la vie.

A very heartfelt Well Done on the trading cards. :)

I thought it was brilliant to have the event kick off with the Red Box. Quite a blast from the bast, that was. And, I am very much in love with the fact that the cards are the first artwork of any of the creatures from the first edition of the Monster Manual. Well... except the Grell, I think that was from the Fiend Folio.

I haven't tried crunching any of the cards yet - so I can't and won't wax philosophic about that yet. But, the nostalgia factor of the cards is off the charts cool.

I think I might just like these better then the Cakes. And I loves me some Cake. :D

There are PLENTY of other threads complaining about this, why did you feel the need to come into this thread and take away from someone else's heartfelt sentiments?

Poor form.

And when you do crunch them you'll realize it uses the same broken UI as the stone of change and the runes in refuge.

You'd think adding something new that uses the same UI would be a good incentive to fix what's broken about it.

But no.

Cards are nice though.

What's wrong with that UI when dealing with only a few cards?

Im guessing they will change their mind - it will probably have more to do with me and others spamming the internet with hysteric histrionics about how Turbine and Warner Brothers are trampling over paying costumers rights than will have to do with breath holding.

I like the reward choices better yeah there is very low almost 0 chances of getting the big rewards the bag for one, but I am happy with some raid timer bypasses some memonic pots and xp elixer and the cards for these rewards seem common enough that you should be able to at least get them, oh and a +3 stat tome for those who don't have one.

Just saying its a nicer option to the cake :) and if it brings some nostalgia to some all the better.

That alamai whatever is a separate issue I don't know why it had to be brought up here.

Strong praise indeed! Thank you.
You are very welcome.

Another thing I meant to mention above, but was pressed for time @ that moment, the choice to use the old MM and FF art was inspired. Not only is it awesomely nostalgic, and stoked my retro-D&D love - but it also fits very well with the Card motif. Again, haven't crunched any of them yet - I'm proably just going to once again play Hoarders: DDO! and collect them for a while before doing so. Another thing these cards have done, trigger my pack-rat mentality. lol

I do have one question, if any passing Dev or Mod has the answer to... I know the "Event" ends at the end of the month, but will the cards vanish at that time? I'd hope not. Even if we can't do anything with them (pending the cards' return next year, if they return next year), it'd be nice to allow folks to hang on to them if they'd like to. I know I'd probably hold on to more then a few if they were going to persist. Conversely, knowing they were going to go *poof* at the end of the event I wouldn't even try.

Again - nicely done. :)

They've responded to a bunch of the Akamai threads. They haven't really said much that people are happy with, since it's mostly just repeating that they're not using the P2P portion, but they've been responding. I imagine they're sick of it. You can check the Dev Tracker to look at all their responses today if you're interested.

I have to agree with Memnir - this is very nice indeed. I've first played D&D when that sort of art was current, and it's a nice bit of nostalgia.

Also I didn't have that many +3 tomes amongst my 30+ toons so getting 8 on the first day is most helpful.

Pando was slightly better (as you could uninstall Pando after the initial DDO install & after updates).

But aren't you the slightest bit worried about a P2P system that NEEDS to be installed every time you run the launcher?
I'm not going to go all tin foil on people, but I feel it's bad form to require this program to be running in the background Even When I'm NOT Playing DDO.
Perhaps if there was a way to deactivate it when the DDO launcher is not running- it would not be as worrisome.

I am disappointed by the lack of a mini kobold that recites lines from crystal cove as a prize, but all of the rest of the card trading bit is quite nice.

I'm a fan. I like that it's more work than the cake, but it's not tedious work. It's a fun little side game and I like it.

Not even a little. It's a system I have worked with in the past, I know several companies use it, and we all get our windows updates through it. It's really not something I care about in the least.

But, then again, I also have no firewall, antivirus, malware remover or anything. I am safe in my browsing, and if I do happen to get a virus, well, it's a minor inconvenience. That being said, again, this program will not have that happen.

Here I am wanting to play (VIP by the way) but adding always on software/spyware that has such questionable uses is totally unacceptable. I will accept a longer/slower update if needed to avoid this issue. We need to be able to opt out of this. Turbine get it fixed or I will have no choice but to cancel

I noticed that too. ;) Nice touch!

I know there's a lot of negativity on the forums and it's oh so trendy and hip to be outraged at anything and everything the Turbine does and says...

But!

I pugged two different groups of folks in Haunted Halls and Thunderholme and we were all having a great time. We did not want it to end.

I'm gonna say well done Turbine folks! And my biggest criticism is that there's not more!

Oh my gods yes! I so love everything I've experienced with the update so far. The cards... perfect. I squeed with joy when I saw the original art for the monsters back when poking around Lam forums looking for previews.
And the Haunted Halls! So wonderful. <3 It really is so much like a classic dungeon run... well as close as you can get in an MMO version I guess. I wish that I had more time, I've been playing D&D for over 20 years now but oddly that's one of the few published dungeons I've never run. I was poking my husband about seeing if we had time to do the Haunted Halls adventure in PnP before the update came out, we didn't quite have the time though. Ah well.

The Ed Greenwood commentary was just pure love. I was so happy with hearing the background to the Forgotten Realms, and some things that I never even knew about it. I started playing D&D in the FR and never knew some of that information about some of the classic, long running baddies in the setting. (Not saying, just in case it's a spoiler. I 'think' it mentions it at the beginning of the quest but I can't remember for sure.)

Seriously, I was so excited when I saw the new treasure for it too!! A Libram of Silver Magic, OMG! I kinda geeked out when I saw that on the list because I was playing some classic PnP dungeons at the time and had been talking about how sad it was that 3rd ed dungeons didn't have treasure like say.. the Towers of Power any longer... with numerous Librams. And the Magestar! I can't even remember where I had originally read about it, but I remember seeing something about that item many years ago while digging through D&D books.

I'm so very happy, it's a wonderful blast from the past for us old school gamers. DDO, you really delivered on this. <3

Flail Snails are one of the most ridiculous and most oft maligned D&D critters. I think they were included first in either the Fiend Folio or MM 2 (leaning towards MM2).

I agree with Memnir the geek nostalgia factor is off the charts... Nearly squeed at the original Monster Manual Owl Bear, there's something taprestry like about the OD&D illustraitions... leaving your imagination something to latch onto as opposed to the more realistic artwork in newer versions..

A little like the difference between 8bit and modern games I think.

Well Done Turbine, the variety of rewards is also very nice. with a few we're not going to know about right away. A lot was said early on about how "elite players" wouldn't care about any of that stuff, but I could only roll my eyes at that. raid timers, XP pots... yeah power gamers hate that stuff

Once you crunch them they are gone. However, once you double click a card to look at it the full image of the card is saved to your 'image gallery' and can be viewed at any time. So use your cards and build a gallery of cards that you have collected. The image gallery is a new option in the main menu where the epic destinies, monster manual, quest journal, etc. are.

I've double-clicked all the cards I've drawn thus far, and only one of them pops up in the Gallery.

Plus, I fully admit I'm almost as egregious a hoarder as I am alt-oholic. :) I'd probably keep one of each card I draw just to have them, Gallery or not. Which is why I'd like to know if they will persist like the Cakes of previous years (I still have many), or the Cookies - or will they vanish.

This right here. Normally even I as grumpy as i am come back for the yearly event. But not this time, no way no how is DDO going back on my pc even temporarily. As far as I am concerned DDO just went about as risky as using pay for access illegal TV/movie sites or asian gold farmer sites.

Actually its worse. I still use project free tv to watch black sails and rake every week atm. Not even the yearly event is half as entertaining as either of those shows(Aussie rake not american rake;))

For those who've never seen this little beauty - the bunny is part of the critter. It's used to lure prey closer, kinda like an Angler Fish. :)

I'm very pleased that they did something new besides cakes. I didn't play before 3rd edition, so most of these monsters mean nothing to me.

Still cool to have a new idea, with throwback art. Hopefully they get the dice rolling again soon.

I'll admit, as much as I enjoy the cards - not being able to roll again puts a damper on the whole shebang.

thx for posting this. I had the same feeling hit me when I was watching the production video and saw the flail snail!

This is a low, underhanded move, trying to hijack the thread in this manner.

And I apologize for my own interruption of the conversation, but I couldn't let this go unremarked.

Not responding with anything of value is not responding.

You not seeing any value in their responses due to your ignorance is not the same as the response having no value to anyone.

There is much to be said for valuing another's opinion even, or perhaps especially, when you disagree with it. On the other hand, "Opinions are like a**holes. Everybody's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks."

Indeed, thanks a lot and more of this!

Building lore is what makes a great Fantasy World or RPG, 40 years of history is an RL legacy that no other game out there is cultivating in the same way as DDO. Building an MMO for the future while not forgetting the games roots is always appreciated.

Nope.

From the replies to the PC thread about this Card no-one else on the PC has got it - Just Flav!

Make of that what you will.

Luck of the frogs?
