I was supposed to log in with a friend I was trying to get into the game. He is interested, made a character, and we were supposed to meet online today to play, but nether of us can log in. I called him and he is having the same problem. We just get a black screen saying "Installing Pre-Reqs". Not a great first impression and I want to play too. Anyone have a fix, or know what is going on? We are running Windows 7. I have never had this problem before and usually play all the time. This does get me to spend some time in the forums though :P

First, dl and install the DDOPreloader (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/420738-How-to-make-the-game-loading-faster-DDOPreload-official?highlight=DDOPreloader). Start the game via the Preloader exe. If this doesn't help, it could be an issue with that Happy Cloud thing. Do both of you have the small blue cloud icon in the active tasks list when the launcher starts? If not, try to manually start Happy Cloud in your programs list and define it as an exception for your Firewall.

All good suggestions, but, I have been using the Preloader for a long time now and I have had the same problem as OP for about a week now. Occasionally the launcher will get stuck at installing prereqs and stop there until I either end it with Task Manager or it times out. Never had this happen before about a week ago. My girlfriend has the same problem started about the same time. Usually restarting the launcher fixes it , but last weekend I had to reboot at least once to solve the problem.

I had the same experience as the OP, recommended this game to my brother. He d/l and installed. Called me and said it wouldn't launch, so I told him to get the preloader. His comment to me; "Why isn't this included in the program, how long has this game been out?" He was totally incredulous when I told him that the preloader was written by a player. Wasn't too happy about the Pando Media Booster either.

While I'm at it, would be really nice if I didn't have to [ctrl/alt/del -> task manager -> ddo.exe -> end task] at least once or twice a day too. That gets really old really quick.

I've also been having this problem over the past few days. (I run my install off of a 16 gig USB and don't use the preloader. Another good alternative to have the game start quickly).

Personally, I think the issue with "installing pre-reqs" is a network connectivity issue to the servers, which I believe were acting up. I know there were a few maintenance windows over the past few days, and saw some posts on Twitter about "investigating login issues".

So my hunch is that it was server-side issues, as opposed to it really installing something.
