Don't completely understand rangers really.. nor how they do damage. so im more or less a novice to them. i was thinking of 2 bladeforge pally/12 ranger/ 4 monk. i can see how that would make him a good healer but.. not sure about the ranging part...
i do have a 2nd life halfing ranger which.. hits weak tastic numbers.. lvl 19 and still only hitting in the 20's.. thought high dex is needed.. i have high dex.. yet.. not working so great..

Any build with 6 levels of ranger and 6 levels of monk will be a strong AA. Take the 10k stars feat and alternate that with manyshot when ranging.
Also make sure you get a bow with a 19-20 crit as your primary weapon. Silver Longbow > EE Roadwatch most of the time.
And don't be afraid to take Stunning Fist and melee when appropriate.
Wisdom should be your primary stat, but note that Strength still modifies your damage. So you really only need a 21 base dex (so you can take the Combat Archery epic feat)

Your ranger with high dex may not be doing much damage because dex is only used to hit. Not to do damage. That relies only on the stats of the bow itself.
Unless you have the Bow strength feat - and on a ranger you get it at level 1. Then your strength modifier is used for damage.

The powerful archers in the game at the moment are using manyshot and 10K stars to produce multiple arrows and therefore multiply the damage they do.
Here's my pure archer's build and man does she do a lot of damage - from strength and multi-arrow shots. She's also largely self healing through scrolls (half-elf cleric dillettant) and coccoon.
