Our guild just upgraded our ship from the horribly laid out Stormglory Tempest to the OMGWhyDoesTurbineHateUs layout that is the Windspire Gryphon.
I mean.... really? The top deck is all confused, with a guy hiding in the back of the ship, and 3 distinct other spots for buffs. And the lower hold... holy cripes.... nooks & crannies of every stripe, random partial floors, and then steps to jump up just because.....
It seems that we are being punished because we wanted to add a Bar to our buffs....
So now, every time we do our little buff scurry... we'll think of Turbine as that much more incompetent than we used to....
Brilliant!

I actually like the StormGlory Tempest layout. My guild kept that ship until just a couple of weeks before we made lvl 85. We had they Windspyre Griffon for only about 2 weeks before we bought the StormGlory Typhoon.
The Typhoon has a very similar layout to the Tempest. The Windspire Griffon is just horrible however.

Yes, the top tier ships are a confusing mess and aren't something our guild is going to invest in because of their layout.
Money lost for them.
Wasn't there some mention of new ships coming this year? If so....
Please, Turbine, consider the layouts of the ship and make things simpler and pleasant to look at without unnecessary stair layouts and half hidden hookpoints. Thanks.

Think in terms of Windspyre vs. Stormglory, and you will have your answer. ;)
ETA: But hey, GL 85 plus 2k AS will get you the Stormglory Typhoon, which has a nicer layout. :D

The level 55 Stormglory is better than the level 80 ship. My guild kept it until we hit 85 and could get the big one.

One might argue that the level 55 Stormglory actually has the best layout of all the ships, as far as placement goes and being able to move through the whole ship quickly.
The 85 Stormglory has this massive deck and only 3 little hookpoints, but 4 clustered around the captain in that little space. I'm always misclicking on something in this crowded area.
What I'd really like if we get new/bigger ships:
Variable placement of hookpoints. Get a hookpoint from the first mate, then go the place on the ship where you want it, stand facing the direction you want the amenity to face, then use the hookpoint. Uses your current /loc and facing to check for adequate room and if so, puts the hookpoint on the deck at that spot.
Want your most popular buffs (like resist and xp) all on the main deck for less than 1 minute trips to the ship? Do it.
Want your top deck nothing but fluff like the banker, auction, mail, bar, etc. to create a guild hang-out place for between quests? Fine, do it.
(Honestly, did this use of airships ever occur to anyone designing them? Or were they just a place for a randomly placed buffs?)
If variable placement would be too difficult, then cover the decks with a grid of hookpoint locations, and order show types (instead of all) from the first mate since there could be overlapping hookpoints (1 large over 2-4 small, for example). First mate also tells you how many you can use/have used. Placement of amenities works as we have now - there's just an excess of hookpoints and we cannot access all of them at the same time.
I'd also prefer the option of putting small or large amenities on large hookpoints.
And also please no more floating amenities. I'm not talking about the mailbox.

My only major gripe with guild ship layouts is that every single one is 2 separate instances. A full round of buffs involves 2 loading screens on the ship alone in addition to loading onto the ship to start with and then leaving the ship. I'm sure there may have been technical limitations keeping the upper and lower deck from being one instance, but this still bothers me.
