View Full Version : How does Spell Resistance exactly work?

Today I did the Reclamation quest in the mineshaft (Ataraxia's Heaven). This is a Level 10 Quest on normal difficulty. I set it to Elite. I was a Wiz 10 / Rogue 2 / Druid 1. Charm Person and the Enchantment SLA Resistable dance worked pretty good and in 95% of all cases did what they are supposed to do. But the Hold Person SLA never worked (0%) on any of the duergar because it couldn't break through their Spell Resistance. It seemed that they have more than one spell resistance value - they can become charmed easily but never holded. My Spell Pen roll was 1d20 + 10 + 3 (Helf racial) + 3 (AM) + 2 (Wiz PL).

What irritates me is the following: Charm Person is a T1 spell, Hold Person a T3 spell, both first must overcome Spell Resistance and then are saved or not. The spell and the SLAs were all heightened and enlarged and had the exact same DC (30). While in some cases the Charm spell was saved, the Hold SLA instead always was defeated by Spell Resistance. Why wasn't I able to hold the duergar but to charm and dance them only? Was it just some crazy moment of really bad luck in a row in a whole dungeon or did someone experience something similar already?

I am not a DDO expert, but I know that my paralyzing weapons do not work on duegar. Perhaps they are immune to such affects which might include hold spells also? Might want to check the wiki for the best information.

It might relate to Immunity to Paralyze for Duergar (http://ddowiki.com/page/Duergar).

Immunity to paralysis, phantasms, and poison. This trait replaces the hill dwarf’s +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison.

Thank you all for clarifying this. It's not me, it's the others, what a relief :-)
