View Full Version : Character freezing for several hours

I have had this issue happen a few times before... I will be playing, then all of a sudden my player just stands in place. I keep my green connection to the game, and can chat fine, but I cannot move, jump, tumble, cast spells, switch items or anything. If I sit there, after about 5 minutes my connection goes red and disconnects. If I log back in, I can move around for about 30 seconds, but then the exact same thing happens again. Every time this issue comes up, it sticks around for at least six hours, and I'll just have to try logging in now and then throughout the day to see if my character is able to move.

Also, it will just be one character. All my others can move just fine if I log in to them, but one character is basically disabled for several hours.

This is new. Now I get "Error taking a number in the queue! Connection timed out"

No advice except this: Bug report it and/or call Customer Service. Luck, this is very very frustrating for you I am sure.
started happening to me about 7 hours ago.

I noticed a problem yesterday night around 9:30 pm est. It started when I kept losing chat server connection then it would reconnect only to go out again a minute or so later. Then I would freeze, disconnect from server then reconnect. I was unable to do any quest yesterday do to this problem. Didn't want to get into a quest just to freeze and die. So logged out for the night.
Today when I tried logging in it said all servers were down and everything was in red. So, I brought down the client and restarted it. Everything said it was up this time and everything was green. I logged in but stayed froze, would disconnect from chat server and then get red disconnect. I tried logging into many of my characters on the same account from many different level ranges. Same thing would happen each time but would happen even sooner on my epic characters. I even tried my free account and same thing happened.
I checked my computer to be sure it wasn't acting up, everything there checked out fine. I then checked my internet connection to make sure there was nothing going on to cause this problem. Everything checked out fine on my internet connection as well. I was able to login, play, and not lose connection with 2 other games I play with no problems at all.
Going to submit a ticket but wanted to let others know I'm having similar problems as well.
Peace

I have been logging in and out of mine and my 2 brothers' accounts today just to see how questing is going, and between our accounts, we have been disconnected 5 times in the past 2 hours. Characters will just freeze in place. Other characters around us in the public instance are walking around fine, and we can chat, but all our accounts keep having this problem. Immediately after, usually it takes several tries to log back in. The launcher will come up with an error connecting to the patch server

Yeah, it takes like 4-6 relogs and you get about 2 min of playtime then you stuck again. rinse repeat ... the game is unplayable.
Well logged in another character and so far 0 problems like my other one. Wonder why it only affects certain characters.

Argo server. connecting from NC via Time Warner Road Runner cable. Started around 9:30 PM last night. Worked all day today and came home to still having the same connection problems. Chat Server lost goes out, and usually wind up disconnecting, but a couple times the connection was reestablished. Route trace is not showing anything significant.

I have a single character on my account i can play. all the rest freeze as soon as they load in. This is just weird and probly wont ever get fixed until Monday if then even.
*EDIT*
Hm. Seems if i stay in Forgotten Realms i can play my main character. As soon as i ported her to any of the Eberron places that my mark would let me go, it started fritzing out. Thats really curious.

I have Time Warner Road Runner as well. I'm on wireless where another in my household is on a hardline. Both are having the same problem with the game. I checked my internet connections many times today everything else is working just fine. Can stream videos, and play other mmo games just fine. Just can't seem to be able to play ddo.

What realms is everyone having trouble with? Eberron or Forgotten Realms? My 1 character i can play is in Forgotten Realms, i tried porting to Eberron and it stuck me in place as soon as it finished loading.
I made a ticket in game and was told to make a Support ticket on the website. Did that, wonder if ill ever hear back.

I made a ticket and bug report today as well. So far I have heard nothing back. Eberon is where I have tried logging in at. All my characters are pretty much on guild ship. I will try going to Forgotten Realms at login and see what happens.
Does anyone else have Time Warner Road Runner as their internet provider?

I've moved one of the two characters I that I was attempting to play and having the disconnect issues over from Eberron to the Forgetten Realms via the Hall of Heroes on the character selection screen. So far, just standing around in Eveningstar, I've not had any of the issues that I was. I'm going to give It some more time and then to back to Eberron and see if the problem re-introduces itself.

Well thats something atleast. So its not a total fluke Forgotten Realm isnt messing it up. Ive been afk and playing with iconics for awhile now and no issues. Tried to login my lowbie and not 5 seconds in it locked up.

Well the chat server has gone off and reestablished itself again three times in the past few minutes now, but haven't disconnected because of it. Still sitting in Eveningstar.

*EDIT* Got a reply from support. Ive only tried it for a few minutes, but ive not had any fritzing so far.
Greetings ,
Thank you for your reply.
Please open your Documents > Dungeons and Dragons Online folder and then perform these steps:
Within there locate the 'userpreferences.ini' file and right-click on it choosingRename and rename it to olduserpreferences.ini
Once the file has been renamed on the game launcher, before you select a world server to log into, click the button in the row in the upper right-corner that has the single down-arrow on it.
Choose Options from the menu that brings up.
In there under the Repair tab click to enable the Reset game display settings option and clickok.
Then select your preferred server and launch the game again to test choosing yes when prompted "Are you sure?".
At this point if prompted to enable DirectX 10 or 11 graphics choose "No".

I had gotten a response too and just got done trying the suggested:
"Thank you for your reply.
As a test, please perform the steps outlined below to refresh your internet connection completely, and note any results or changes:
Start by power cycling your router and/or modem by unplugging them, waiting 10 to 20 seconds, then plugging them back in
Once those have reset themselves click on the "Start" button and then click on "All Programs"
Choose "Accessories"
In the menu, find the "Command Prompt" icon, right-click it and chooseRun as Administrator. If this option is not listed, simply left-click the command prompt icon instead
On the Command Prompt window that pops up, type the command below exactly as it appears, hitting the enter key afterward:
ipconfig /flushdns
When that command finishes, there should be a message of "Successfully flushed the DNS resolver cache", at which point please reboot your computer and upon re-entering Windows, and test again to see if the issue persists.
If after typing in the ipconfig /flushdns command and hitting enter you do not see the success message, or if you received an error, ensure that you typed the command exactly as it appears above.
Once you have reset your connection as detailed, note in a reply if there was any effect on the issue, or if any came up during the process and we will gladly assist with additional troubleshooting steps.
Thank you,
The Turbine Technical Support Team"
I logged in on a first life level 13 character but was still on the guild airship, seemed to be fine. I then logged on to a level 22 TR character, again was fine on guild airship but.. when I left ship and went into the market and I lost chat server. I went to guild ship port to try and get back on airship and it froze. I had to bring up task manger and end progress of game.
The other person in my household that plays the game did the same suggestion and had the same results. Hoping someone finds a solution soon.

I got another reply. Seems to work so far. the network thing has been green for awhile now on 9000. Ill post if it messes up again.
Greetings ,
Thank you for your reply.
Please open the userpreferences.ini file found in your Documents > Dungeons and Dragons Online folder, and within that file under the sectioned titled [Net] change UserSpecfiedPort to 9000 (e.g. UserSpecifiedPort=9000 )
Exit the file and choose yes when prompted to save changes prior to launching the game to test these settings.
Note that if there is no change using 9000 in the above steps also try using the remaining ports in the 9000 to 9010 range sequentially, as doing so potentially might narrow down if a specific port addresses the issue encountered. Detail any results or whether the issue persists in your reply.
Thank you,

That's because they're not troubleshooting, they're easter egging, just throwing generic "solutions" out and seeing if something sticks rather than looking around and seeing if your problems are unique or not...looking around somewhere like, oh, I don't know, this forum and see at least 5-6 people reporting problems starting 2 nights ago around 9:30 EST?

Not sure about you all but I have not heard anything else back from *Tech Support* so far today. I'm still not able to play the game again today. This makes day 3.
Lets all try to find out what all we have in common with our problems we are having ok.
*What internet provider do you have? (Me: Time Warner Cable Road Runner)
*What is your location? (Me: Ohio U.S.)
*What time did you notice the problem(s) started for you? (Me: Around 9:30pm est on Thursday Dec. 5, 2013)
*What was the main problem(s) you were having? (Me: When trying to log in it would say all world servers were down, or after putting pw in the client would say "in line to connect". When I would restart client I could then get to the character select screen then into the game to either experience one of the following things: Chat sever connection would go down, yellow status bar, and froze can not move. Other times I could walk around for about a minute as long as I was on my guild ship but the chat server connection most of the time would go down first before I would freeze up and not be able to move. Anytime I left the ship and went to somewhere like the harbor, market, house p, etc. sometimes I could get in and walk a little bit from ship port, other times I would freeze right away. I had even froze to the point I would get disconnected from the game at which point the status bar would go from yellow, orange, and of course to red before disconnecting. Other times it would be yellow and disconnect right away.
I have tested many characters on the same account from first life level 5 to level 22 TR. Even tested my premium account characters with the same results. The other person in my household that plays the game and has a different type of machine and is on a hard line is experiencing the same thing.
Thank you and Peace.

Three different PCs in my house are having the same problem on three different accounts. I live in North Carolina, and I am using Time Warner Cable. It started around 9:30pm on December 5th, as Rowan said. Sometimes I can walk around for a little bit, but if I change maps, I can take about 5 steps and then my character will completely freeze up for an extended period of time and several relogs.

Still not able to play myself. This is the third day. While the issue started with my main and seemed to be isolated there, on the 2nd day forward it spread to every character I played, shortly after playing them. Now I can (eventually) log on, however after talking to my guildies for about 1 minute, and seeing people run around me in circles, asking if I can see them move, everything then freezes and I get a full RED connection for about 2 minutes, and it then promptly loses connection to server and game client closes.
Lets all try to find out what all we have in common with our problems we are having ok. From above ^,^ Wanted to leave in your answers to compare.
*What internet provider do you have? (Me: Time Warner Cable Road Runner) Same I believe. I have Time Warner (They just bought out Insight Cable which ran fine.)
*What is your location? (Me: Ohio U.S.) Kentucky U.S.
*What time did you notice the problem(s) started for you? (Me: Around 9:30pm est on Thursday Dec. 5, 2013) Exactly the same time give or take an hour or so.
*What was the main problem(s) you were having? I laughed at first, because my main was in eveningstar jumping over the well and was hanging in mid air. people were below me and were commenting on how I was just stranded up there. So whatever that means I have no clue. If its server connection only I should have dropped down and only I should've seen what I did. 2nd: Like I said, everyone else is fine. I am able to chat with them, for a bit until it finally gives me the connectivity box going from yellow to red. Then about 2 minutes later each time, disconnected from server.
Now this at first only affected my main. I figured it was an oddity, so I switched toons for a while. Came back, she was in a different location in eveningstar, red box connection upon loading in.
3rd times the charm about an hour later, as soon as I got into game and could move, I /Death to get back to ebberon and my guild ship. Where after about 6 minutes of being alright, proceeded to stand around once again til disconnect.
Now when I log onto any of my toons its the same deal. Everything is fine for about 2-4 minutes, then it begins and I can chat only. Then after about a minute or so of that, disco box comes up and while I can chat, I can't see anyone else doing so, and they are running in place. Then red box, and 2 minutes later, Im gone.
From what I have seen, most of the people in this thread have mentioned Time Warner, and several have mentioned being in KY like myself. I seriously hope this doesnt turn into a regional thing preventing us in these areas from getting on to DDO in the future, but this is Time Warner we're talking about...... it's possible ><

One of my guildies is/was currently experiencing this problem.
He noticed that typing in general chat caused an error to appear basically stating that the general chat channel had an error. This brought up memories of when this happened a while ago.
The solution to that problem is in the forum archives at: http://www.ddo.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-127635.html
In short, go to userPreferences.ini in your Documents/DDO area
Go to the net area
change UserSpecifiedPort=0 to UserSpecifiedPort=9000
Save. Restart client.
Hopefully profit. Hope that helps.

If you go to the command prompt and do
tracert www.ddo.com
are you seeing a path that goes through atlas.cogentco.com ?
I'm seeing some higher spikes and an occasional * missed value.
Pinging www.ddo.com constantly sometimes has a time out also.
So far I'm seeing people with this problem from Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina and a few euro players. I'm from NC on Time Warner and have still been having these same issues since 9:30 PM eastern on Thursday night.l

So far I'm seeing people with this problem from Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina and a few euro players. I'm from NC on Time Warner and have still been having these same issues since 9:30 PM eastern on Thursday night.l
I've tried all of the suggestions from people that submitted an actual support ticket and posted the response, short of re-installing the game.

As someone else pointed out, while we are frozen, we can access social panels, look people up etc. I cannot however, switch weapons, cast spells, interact with anything in the game. I am still connected to the chat server, and can see other people walking around and fighting, etc. It's almost as if the server is sending info to me, but I am not sending info back.

I am having the exact same problem. Like most of you, the problems began on 12/05/13, around 9:30pm Eastern time. Like many of you, I have Time Warner Cable internet and live in Ohio.
Also like many of you I submitted a Ticket to Turbine and have received no assistance. To date, I received an automated request for a Dxdiag printout, and after sending it, a second automated response stating to reply to the message if I still required assistance.
I replied to that message about 6 hours ago and have heard nothing.
I have also tried a couple of the generic "solutions" posted earlier, and none of them have worked.
So I'm now spending my gaming time during this +30% XP VIP weekend playing Neverwinter Online.

It does seems to happen every few minutes now. I was able to ping and tracert to www.ddo.com while "stuck" so I don't know if it is a networking issues after all. While stuck I was also able to chat with party members through the guild and party chat and they were able to see it in real time ( I was on the phone with them as well ). The game is definitely unplayable now... I don't even want to leave the guild ship because it might take half an hour to get back on.

Hiya having same problem as rest of you I am also TWC RoadRunner victim from NC. My I can play sometimes for an hour or better sometimes. Other times I am lucky to get 10 minutes. Then my toon stops moving. I can see what everyone else is doing my hireling will continue to work and even heal me. Takes about 2 minutes then I get red connection and disconnected. For all you smart people out there working on the problem I read in another forum post that TWC happens to own turbine. This information may be of use to you as TWC can lose money on both ends if they don't fix this problem. Oh yea started at 9:30 on thursday 12/5/13.

This may not be related to our problem(s) but I think I read somewhere on the forums they started dropping the Festivult coins in the chest in Eberron on Thursday Dec. 5, 2013. A guildie said he was on that day and they were dropping when he logged in that afternoon on that day. I didn't try logging on that day until 9:30pm est so not really sure when the problems could of really started. Did any of you happen to try and log in that day around morning or afternoon? I think what I read so far most of us tried to log in around 9:30pm est that night.
I noticed as well that I can stay logged in longer if I am on the Guild Airship, Hall of Heroes or Eveningstar. But sometimes I still can not make it into the game at all. It acts like it is timing out or making attempts to connect and can not.
I called TWC for the second day in a row. Was on the phone for about 4 or 5 hours and had two techs. I even hooked my laptop up from wireless to hard line and it ended up making no difference. I checked all line hookups inside the house. I even went outside and looked if I could see anything wrong with the box on the house. Everything out there seemed fine. TWC so far could not really find why there was a problem.
I still haven't heard back either from ddo/turbine tech support since they wanted me to check that 9000 to 9010 net thingy of a tech bobby.
This all reminds me of when there was a problem with the ISP servers on ddo's end I think this past Summer, or the time when TWC people couldn't get into ddo cause of a timed out problem because of some sort of not finding the website or something along those lines. Please forgive me I can't remember the details but hoping someone else might remember and give some better details on that one.
I had noticed that before I would freeze, and a minute or more later disconnect, the chat server would start to act up first. This happens to me every time, not some of the time but every time. The chat server will either disconnect once then I freeze, or it will disconnect, reconnect and do this a few times before I freeze then lose connection.
When I do a tracert www.ddo.com the first attempt always fails. If I get a chance tomorrow I will try and post what mine says when I do a tracert.
Missing the bonuses for this weekend really stinks. And losing days on VIP really stinks more to me. I tried hard today to find some answers just to be pretty much back to step one maybe. Still hoping one of us will find an answer/solution.
Best Wishes to you all.

Along with TWC as a possible problem I just want to mention that I had just updated my graphics card driver that day as well. I mention this as I thought it might have been the problem to begin with. I am running NVIDIA 620 graphics card Driver version 331.65. Is this the case for anyone else or am I barking up the wrong tree?

My provider is Time Warner. I live in Southern Indiana. I am experiencing the same issues as most of you: freeze then disconnect within just a few minutes of logging in.
I used tracert this morning (6:50 am), and had several instances of "request timed out". I ran again 10 minutes later and had no time outs.
Time Warner seems to be a common theme, as is cogentco (routes traffic). Googled cogentco, found WoW, Neverwinter, DDO, etc get routed through there.
Will keep a watch on the thread, see if anyone finds a solution. Would kind of like to play DDO :(

I'd say it's safe to say this is a problem somewhere on the internet between us and Turbine. Turbine could probably fix this with some research and some work with routers (possibly routers belonging to other companies) but that probably won't happen until the work week at the earliest.
And yes, same problem, TWC Ohio.
same problems i have twc in northeast ohio also

It seems if I continuously attack, I don't freeze. I'll only freeze when I stop attacking and attempt to do some other interaction like pick up a collectable or talk to someone. This is better than previously where I would freeze while just running around. Not really a work around but interesting to note. If I don't attack constantly I am now freezing in a matter of seconds after which I'll sometimes recover and sometimes be disconnected.

My (new!) wife has been having this exact issues all day but it has gotten progressively worse in the last two hours. Much worse. We too are TWC in North Carolina.
Here is where it gets weird: she and I share a connection and I am not having the problem. Except for about 30 minutes this morning, when I had the problem but she did not.
Weird huh?
She tried resetting her player preferences but that did not help. She changed her port to 9000 and that did help, enough that we could at last finish the quest we were on and she could log out.

Connection issues resolved?
I won't know until later. Connecting to the game from work here is fine, but that doesn't go through time-warner/cogent. (If those are the source of the problem since last week.)
ETA: A post from LoTRO:
Since there's a clamor for some kind of 'official post' here's the details.
There seems to be (for the last day or three) a routing issue affecting a segment of the player base. It is external to Turbine and affiliated systems, appears to be backbone and/or shared data center related affecting either, both or all packet routing/DNS between the affected systems and the game sevrers also may be peering related.
Players on a few specific ISP's are affected, predominately southeast US but if your traffic happens to route through the same systems it affects your connection as well even if you are not on the same ISP.
Http traffic for affected users seems to be fine if a bit slow, but the delays are affecting the games UDP packets during gameplay the most, they either are backed up significantly or simply never reach their destination and your connection times out.
Again it is external to Turbine and affiliated networks but we are aware of it and doing system checks all the same but all signs and portents point to this being external. Again routing appears consistent with this being either a shared data center for a few ISP's or a backbone routing issue that those connections happen to pass through.
You may want to try lowering "Connection Speed" in Options > Troubleshooting along with a power cycle on the ol' modem and router but since it's a third party issue until addressed connections will be affected.
http://www.internetpulse.net/ shows where some connections appear affected with high latency between providers.

Hey everyone! Thanks Vlad for starting the thread. I have been having the same issues for a few days. I am in Kentucky and have Time Warner. I first noticed a problem on Saturday December 7th, though the issue was with all my connections to the internet. Netflix was not working on the Wii, could not go to websites eventually and when in game on my Iconic I kept losing connection to the chat server when trying to be invited to my friends guildship after a very long load screen with NO progress I was kicked from the game with the error msg that I lost connection to the chat server. I called Time Warner and they mentioned they were doing maintenance on the servers to help with possible server lag during the upcoming holidays. After talking with them Netflix on the Wii, surfing the web and every other internet connection works fine other than being able to log on to DDO and stay. I was sincerely hoping the maintenance this morning would help. No dice :( All the problems that have been mentioned in this thread have happened to me. It was not just my iconic that I had problems on. I have not used the suggestions posted here because they do not sound like a fix to our problem. I am debating doing a conference call between Time Warner and Turbine support with the info from this thread readily available. Will let y'all know what I find out and if this is successful! Good luck and take care!

Hey hey all!! So I was not able to set up a conference call but I have been on the phone the last 2 hours trying to get lines of communication going. I called 1-855-WBGames(924-2637) and they said that it was a known issue and that the internet provider had been contacted. They also told me that a dev might be contacted to see this thread and perhaps give us information. I then called Time Warner cable locally and talked with tech support. Admittedly, my call was dropped and a regular tech support worker said they were not aware of the problem and a number of other situations but it boils down to this. I contacted Time Warner Customer Support Office of the President and was able to email them a link of this thread. If you would like to contact them so they can realize a number of us are having this issue their number is : 212-364-8300 option 2 and I sent a link to this thread to the email address: customercarefeedback@timewarnercable.com. Additionally at tech support I talked with John, who is a supervisor and his ID is: V151212. The more they hear this is a far reaching situation the more they will focus on it and resolve the problem.

im from ohio. i recently had this problem as well (and i too have TWC) In addition to the freezes you described, it would disconnect me from the chat server and reconnect randomly, and constantly. i reported a bug, but did not get help before i just decided to check into it myself. i found out by opening ports on my firewall fixed this. *updates can some times cause problems with preset firewalls, is what many support threads told me*. so i went through a bunch of help threads and finally came to one that worked. so i hope this helps guys im linking the thread below. *also i fixed this before the update so i dont know if they fixed it already themselves*

And we're back to where we were before. Although, its doesnt seem to come on as "strong", but eventually still leads to complete disconnect. Also, I now only get one or 2 chat server drops, reconnects b4 belly up.
EDIT: Ok seems to have cleared up. Didn't do anything I didn't do before, but all working now.
EDIT2: I did portforward 9000-9010 on my router, and it was still happening, however, now that it isn't disconnecting me anymore, my gameplay is smoother than evar! No weird hitching when jumping, or jumping out of water, much more fluid all around.
