Question about ML on Iron Defender's collars/docents

Does it depend on the owner's character level or Artificer level? I have a dedicated challenge runner -- Sor 14/Art 3. So far I never even bothered to summon her Iron Defender, figuring it would not last long in high-level challenges. But that could change with ML 17 docent and collar.

The level of an Artificer pet is: Artificer Level + Epic Level.

The same applies to druid. You'd have a level 3 pet, and not much use other than as a lever puller or stone runner (if it was character level, I think you'd so a ton more artificer/druid splashes).
