View Full Version : Noob looking for help with a Cleric/Monk build...

Hey all... I've been messing around with a few classes of late, and I've heard people talk about a "Clonk." It sounded interesting to me in an RP sort of way, a fighter who could heal his allies as well. I've done a couple of searches on the form, but haven't seen a lot that is a specific guide (or it could be that I'm searching wrong; entirely possible as I am an idiot). When I made one (I have 32 point unlocked), I went with a human 16 str/8 dex/14 con/8 int/18 wis (19 with tome)/ 9 cha, thinking I'd add to cha with books & level ups & gear. I'm a 2 cleric/1 monk/1 rogue & thinking of going quarterstaff. Feats, I grabbed Empower Healing, Power attack, and cleave.
Honestly, I'm just kind of muddling my way through at this point, trying to figure out how to build this well. At least, better than my monk/rogue/sorc. Also, the heavy armor leaves me uncentered... though I need it due to my low dex. Hrm.
Thanks for reading!

A few questions..
Why does heavy armour matter with low dex?
What's the aim of that build, aside from healing and a staff?
Typically the purpose of a clonk is to use stunning fist (for CC and okay melee dps), with TWF feats and the ability to cast spells/heal. (Not the most viable EE, but fine for anything else)
What does rogue/monk offer if you're in heavy armour? No evasion, no monk stances... both are irrelevant like that. :\
Why char level ups? Charisma offers next to nothing with that sort of build.

Ah ha! These are questions I didn't even know I should be thinking about, which is part of my problem.
As far as heavy armor/low dex... I assumed with low dex, my getting-out-of the way skills would be, ah, problematic. So I would need to wear the plate for protection - or am I way off base there?
... not sure what EE is, so I'm guessing endgame experience? Something like that? It'll probably be a while before I get there.
Stunning fist - I thought that was unarmed - or can you use it with TWF? As far as what I'm trying to achieve - a great fighter with moderate heals. I'm stuck on clonk simpy because of the RP thing I have stuck in my head, but I can discard that.

Most clonks took their levels for this reason: Cleric levels for spells (maybe for aura/warpriest tree), 2 or 3 monk levels for evasion, 2 feats, unarmed fighting and stunning fist. (3 gives more enhancements and fists of light, but neither matters much.)
Wearing heavy armour, while it will boost AC, prohibits evasion - and that's one of the strongest abilities in the game. (It also stops you using any of the monk goodies, aside from feats/enhancements) And.. at higher levels, AC isn't really worth considering at the hardest difficulty (which isn't relevant for newer players). Not to mention, you could get workable AC through wis/dex mod, while retaining monk unarmed combat, stances and stunning fist.
EE is Epic Elite - the hardest difficulty. (Though some people are pushing for something a bit harder.) and yes, it'll be a while before you're there. I have a bad habit of assuming new players want to do EE on a first life, like I did - hence why I say "not doable" a bit much.
Stunning fist requires unarmed, yes. However, if you're wis based (the entire point of a clonk!), stunning fist will almost always land - and you'll have more overall dps hitting a stunned mob while unarmed then TWF against non-stunned. (Unless we're talking endgame, but bah).
A standard sort of clonk would be 17/2/1 cleric/monk/fighter. 17 cleric for Heal, Mass (and enhancements), 2 monk for evasion, 2 feats, unarmed fighting and stunning fist, /1 fighter for haste boost and a feat. Start with enough dex for TWF, max wisdom and then put some points in str/con.
If you're just after a THF cleric with a staff, putting level ups in str (for melee dps) or wisdom (spell DC, so spells land more often) would be better than charisma. Also not sure what rogue offers to such a build, unless you're after the acrobat tree? (In which case monk is fairly redundant)

May want to start over or power through this build and True Reincarnate at 20 (or lesser now). I would probably recommend starting over if the build/toon hasn't grown on you yet. Human works as does the class split, although 17/2/1 Cleric/Monk/Rogue (I actually run the same one, but Halfling), is more of a flavor build now thanks to the multiple updates.
15/15/15/15 Str/Dex/Con/Wis would be my suggestion, just like a pure Monk and level ups into Wisdom and do a simple 18/2 split, which with Warpriest, is tremendously better :) I just noticed you used a +1 tome so slogging through this life may be indeed what you choose to do. Its very possible because there are plenty of pure cleric's who make it so you should also.
Toughness (Monk)
Power Attack (Monk)
Cleave
Greater Cleave
IC: Bludgeon
Empower Healing
Quicken
Empower
Maximize
(Open Feat, possibly Dragonmark for DD)
And use the enhancement tree to make your Staff's ones to remember :) There is Staff of the Seer (level 8 staff) but I am assuming it is either a very rare drop or people hate the expansion so much they don't bother :(
I wish you the best of luck.

Requires a +2 dex tome for itwf and gtwf feats. The build delays as long as possible for both of those feats, but you'd need it before taking lvl 15. If you can't get a +2 dex tome by then, I guess the alternative is adept of forms, master of forms, and then grandmaster of forms at lvl 21.
Important gear:
< LVL 14
any lower level frozen tunics that you want to farm up
If no frozen tunic, standard outfit of invulnerability.
If running in fire stance, + stunning hardwraps, otherwise whatever.
Consider Sora Kell set, as it provides potency without taking up the body (frozen tunic) or hands (handwraps)
shamanic fetish is available on the AH, and will cover devotion and radiance.
vampiric stonedust wraps reasonably good, but may be more effort than they are worth for this build.
LVL 14-16
T3 ML16 Frozen tunic, very important because it provides +1 ki on hit. This is important because you now will have enough ki to be able to use stunning fist all the time. In fact, I'd consider running in fire stance before this point, simply as a way of building up ki
For destiny, I'd guess exalted angel or grand master of flowers, though farming up enough to get legendary dreadnaught lvl 1 so you can twist in legendary tactics (for +6 stunning fist DC) is probably worth the effort.

Contrary to what has been said previously I don't think ki generation will be a problem after level 6 or so. With only a pair or handfull of monk levels your damage will be pretty low , even with everything stunned.
It will take a bunch of hits to kill most mobs so you will more than likely have spare ki most of the time.
Not to worry that isn't a terrible thing. It is just the nature of the beast. You will be nigh unkillable and walk away from just about every fight , they will just take longer than most builds.
If you find ki is a problem , which I doubt, there is a + concentration skill in the heshin mystic tree that seem worthless till you buy the 3rd rank and notice it gives +1 passive ki regeneration.

If my damage is low, I'd like you to ask everyone on Thelanis <10 to reroll.
I'm yet to not have the most kills in a quest.

Some tricks with Clonks:
Helpless mobs take amplified damage from all sources, including spells.
A Clonk can combine Spell Like Abilities (SLAs) with Stunning Fist as a fun way of doing more damage. All Clerics can do something similar with Hold Person on humanoid mobs (useful for archers and big heavies). Later on the Symbol of Stunning spell/Power Word Stun SLA can be combined with AOE damage spells to amplify damage taken by mobs.
If the Clonk is a 17/3 mix (or deeper splash), Radiant Servant abilities such as Positive Energy Burst and Healing Aura and other Turn-related abilities can be used without interrupting combos. Also, so can Halfling Dragonmarks, Unyielding Sovereignty, and a Cleric past life feat for True Reincarnated (TR) characters. I actually haven't tried yet with the new Divine Disciple SLAs to see if they can be used between combos.
Gear-wise...
House D Sentinels Chain, Bracers of Jidz Tet-ka ...provides extra bonuses depending on stance (min level 5 with an epic version available). Of particular note is the Healing Amp benefit to Fire stance.
Harbor/The Twelve chains Harbinger and Reign of Madness...there is a Robe that can be acquired from a quest in the first chain, which can be crafted with collectibles from the second chain to have +10 resistance bonus to reflex save. This robe is min level 14. The penalty to spellpoints can be suppressed by wearing a Trinket from the second chain. I have a Docent from the second chain on my Warforged Clonk (challenging build to recommend, I'm still in the process of rebuilding my characters and haven't got to that one yet)
Thaumaturgy staves are useful - something with Devotion, Healing Lore and either Light, Void or Impulse spellpower depending on favoured spells. Other staves can help consolidate slots...
Kamas can be crafted for spell types as well, offering customization options, eg Potency, Devotion, Ardor, Spell Pen, Shattermantle, Wounding etc. Shurikens can also be crafted, get a Returning one to disjunct into a 'blank' (used to be available via collectors, now your best bet is to break more crates/barrels and check the AH).
Then there's the newer gear, which I'm still learning about...lots of good stuff available just from random gear.

You can use shortswords and stay centered, plus you get dex to damage, so you can dump strength. This build also doesn't put any effort into wisdom, because there's no stunning fist DC to keep high. So you can tool around in master earth stance for the critical bonus. In theory, you could use two celestias. Also, you could use a Luck blade (http://ddowiki.com/page/Luck_Blade) Slotted with devotion, radiance, and impulse or fire for your spell boosting needs.
The envenomed blade is probably your best interim weapon, with something like golden guile or backstabbers gloves to increase your chances to being able to land your sneak attack damage from ninja spy.
I picked light monk mostly for the SP reduction available from aligning the heavens. Not sure what dark monk would have to offer here.

Thinking of something like the previous build you posted (without dump str) for my next life, but will probably try out a 16/2/2 for the extra fighter feat and since I'll just be tr'ing at 20 so won't have much use for those 9th level spells.
With the extra feat I'll be gaining I'm planning on taking adept of forms. I was wondering if there'd be merit to taking master of forms instead of IC bludgeoning. Gives me more options as to how I play and I've eat +3 tomes in a few of those key stats, so the +3 from master would put me bank on an even number, depending on which stance I'm in.
Is this something that I most definitely should NOT do on a build like this? If not, then why?

I just want to /second the dragonmark of passage and the enhance points in racial to get dimension door. Somehow I got along without that for years but now I can't imagine not fitting them in on a human since the line is a one-feat investment rather than a 2. In most quests it will speed you up (like Rainbow in the Dark) or give you an out when you're looking at turning into a soulstone.

Jingwei, quick question on your builds: Isn't taking monk on level 1 preferred for skill points?

The drawback to going DEX-based on a cleric (or pally or FvS) is you don't benefit from Divine Might. Also, if you completely dump STR, you can't take Power Atk, which is gonna hurt your DPS. That's why I think it's better in the long run to go either STR- or WIS-based on a clonk.

Normally yes, but if you do that here, you can't take Emp Heal at lvl 1; since his STR is too low for Power Atk, what would he take instead? Precision req's BAB 1, so it's not an option; and he didn't go WIS-based, so Stunning Fist is of limited use. Plus he won't unlock Heal and Spellcraft as class skills until lvl 2 if he does monk first.

IIRC, I started with cleric to get the free points in skills I cared about (concentration, heal, spellcraft). Starting with monk just gives me concentration and, I dunno, balance and jump.
