View Full Version : Tome of Skill +1 (Disable Device)

The other day I rolled a 97 on the daily dice and won a Tome of Skill +1 (Disable Device) on my ranger. I only have the one toon on that server and (obviously) Disable Device is not a Ranger skill. If I use to tome, will that open up the Disable Device skill for me?

It might. But I seriously doubt if it'll be there as an option to spend skill points on while you level.
If I'm wrong about that, the market for these things is about to absolutely explode.

Disable Device is still only available to Artificers and Rogues. I would hope that a class unable to use Disable Device wouldn't even be allowed to eat the tome in the first place.

I'd love to test this, but I suspect you'd be able to eat the tome. The probability of this being a bug is very close to 1.

Thanks, Hucka.
My bet is that the test is "If player has ever spent a point in DD, then allow the skill to be used". And I am assuming further that the tome will count as a spent point. This is not the same as "allow the player to spend level up skill points on this".
I mean, it's useless unless it allows a class to spend skill points on it as they level. If it does, it's the most broken thing in DDO. And the OPs tome is one of the most valuable things in DDO.

beeing able to read a disable device tome on a pure cleric - YES
it increases the skill and thus makes it usable without points spend - NO, still N/A
allows you to spend points in DD at levelup - NO, DD doesnt show up in teh skill tab
the tome bonus counts as point spent (as in your last post) - NO, it counts as misc modifier and shows up there
the skill becomes a class skill for every class - NO, at least not for cleric but i doubt it does for any class
tested on a newly created female morning lord with a +2 DD tome eaten at lvl5
edit: if it would enable class skills then it truely would be overpowered as everyone who preordered the shadowfell pack with the legendary upgrade gets one +2 tome of his choice and two +3 tomes of his choice on every character, even new ones

Agreed, hence the question.

Thanks. So, really I should trade or sell it.

I'm glad that you asked that question, hazelnut, and glad Hucka tested it; I also got one of those tomes, but on a wizard character. I do have a rogue character, but she's on a different server. I wish there were a way to just send it. :/ Looks like I'll be selling mine.

I was a bit disappointed that it would not open up the skill for me, but then with the ability to multi-class or reincarnate, it's my own stubbornness about being a pure ranger that is stopping me from having that skill. And, since I imagine such tomes are rare and hence valuable, I'm taking the opportunity to try out the astral shard exchange. So, I'm still pretty happy even if it's for a completely different reason than when I first picked up the tome.

I would hope that ANY character would be able to use the tome. I would be very annoyed if it were otherwise.
Tomes do persist through True Reincarnation.

Ah, good point. I always forget about the reincarnation system since I'll never make use of it.
