I had someone in game earlier insist they were a pure monk and able to open locks untill this patch or a few patches ago. Is this true?

I guess they could possibly take cross class ranks in open lock and umd, rolling with knock scrolls or something else to boost them to where they could get some of the locks in the game. Monks never got open lock as a class skill though, and I would be wary of someone claiming they used to be able to open epic level locks as a pure monk.

Edit: this is based off of my knowledge, which does not contain the whole of the game's existence. I have played monk prior to u14 though, and I started playing around u9 I believe.

Would the monk in question be a half-elf? I don't know if the half-elf rogue dilettante enables them to pick locks or not, just making a guess.

No,

but back in PnP D&D... maybe 2nd addition Monks could open locks I think.

Some people may have made Monchers with a level or more in Artificer.

human\half orc with mark of finding, and the 2nd tier of it. lesser mark of finding give knock.(uses character level + cha)
half orc can also use enhancement to change it to use their intimidate skill.

Probably not what you're looking for OP, but I max UMD on all of my characters, even the pure ones and I carry knock scrolls. Useless for higher level quests, but still works in challenges and if you're farming lower level quests for twink gear.

There was No Such thing as Monks in 2nd Ed. {Unless you were R.A. Salvatore or using House Rules/Taking from 1st Ed.}.

There was a Monk Kit for Clerics however - Yes that's right - 2nd Ed. Monks were actually Monks NOT Ninjas!

There was a Complete Ninja's Handbook - Basically they were Fighter/Rogues.

As far as I know - Monks have NEVER been able to Open Locks as they've Never had Rogue Skills {OL btw was NOT a Skill (Proficiency} in 2nd Ed. - It was an Ability granted by your Class!}.

I can't think of any way for a PURE Monk in DDO to have EVER been able to Open Locks via the Skill {It is Rogue/Arti ONLY!}.

The guy could have been using Knock Scrolls {or the H-Orc Dragonmark - which is also Knock!} to do this But then he wasn't talking about OL.

I don't even think there's a single Knock Clickie Out there so if he could open Locks before on his Pure Monk he was either using Knock Scrolls or Had the H-Orc Dragonmark.

DDO monks have never had the ability to open locks as a monk ability or skill.

What a character might do (might have done) with racial dragonmarks or in a table-top game is entirely different but also not germane to the topic as these are not DDO monk abilities.

He might be confusing AD&D with second edition. The first game was just D&D but then AD&D came out...a lot of people call that second edition.

Anyhow, in AD&D monks *were* granted some rogue skills and open lock was among them. In those days it was a percentage that increased with your level and not something you placed points into. *Sigh*...those were the days. :)

I'm confused. Trapfinding is a rogue (or artificer) special ability, but isn't Open Lock just a skill? In P&P, I'm pretty sure monks could just put points (admittedly at the cross-class rate) in Open Lock if they wanted to. They'd never be much GOOD at it, but they could in principle do it.

No. Open locks requires rogue/artificer levels. Try creating a character that is any other class, the skills Disable Device and Open Lock will not be available to you unless you have at least one level of rogue/artificer.
