View Full Version : Quests and Randomness

I'm curious what everyone thinks about having randomness in quests. Right now after you have run a quest a couple of times its very predictable... right down to the exact spawn points of monsters. In addition, most quests are basically the same - you go from room to room battling 4-6 mobs until you get to the end where there are 4-6 guys and a red named guy with lots of HP.
So, I was thinking that it would be a lot of fun if the quests were more random as to monster numbers and locations. For example, maybe each location has a chance to spawn 0-30 mobs. Sometimes you enter a room that is empty, but next time you run the quest it could have 30 mobs in it. Of course you would need to do some balancing so you always have the same overall mobs in the quest, so people wouldn't try to farm for the 'easy' instance.
Never knowing what you were going to get when you opened the door sounds like it would be a blast to me.
In addition, you could have random trap locations. And maybe some of the stat runes could be random.
Anyway, just a thought.... what do you guys think?

There are a few quests with random trap locations, GH quests for example. And there is at least two quests in Devil Battlefield with random layout, which are laggy and buggy as heck. If they fixed the monsters can see through random walls causing immediate DA red. I'd be for more of them.

More randomness in mobs and their abilities is fine. Random stat runes wouldn't be. Random required stat checks would just be annoying. They don't offer any challenge, and if they are random, you couldn't be sure you could complete the quest unless you brought a full group of 6 with each person having a different prime attribute.

I was just thinking for optionals. You would of course need to have the quest set up so anyone could complete it... or that would be just annoying.
And Madmax... I wouldn't be for the random layout. Obviously from a programming perspective that would be hard.

6? You mean 5 others have CON as dump stat?

You know, several multiplayer games have 3D random layouts for years...

Agreed. A bit more randomness would be nice. Monster types, numbers, and locations being somewhat variable would make each time running the dungeon more fun so long as they aren't crazy hard one time and super easy the next.

I could get behind an idea like this, provided that it didn't introduce more problems than are worth the added fun factor.
