View Full Version : Lightning Savant Needs an AoE spell - perhaps Storm of Vengeance from druid class?

I love casters, have 7 of them. I am attempting to cap out a sorcerer savant in each of the 4 elemental types. It seems that each of the 3 most common selections for savant (fire, acid, cold) have similar spells to manage the different needed applications in the game, with the exception of lightning. There is currently no AOE spell for the lightning savant. I was thinking something like a "Charged Field" of energy or just the application of the Storm of Vengeance spell from the druid class, minus the acid damage (it's a cool spell if you haven't seen it.) DDO is always looking for ways to balance the classes and paths within them, I would have thought this was obvious.

eh...? Ball Lightning is a true AOE and Chain Lightning and Electric Loop are AOE if you aim them right.

I was gonna say this...tho adding another AoE spell to the Air arsenal won't hurt my feelings as I generally go Air savant on my Sorc's...

EDIT: Though these aren't a true AoE such as acid cloud, fire wall or blade barrier as the baddies can't be led through them multiple times.

I like the idea. I'm used to ice so when I switched to air, I felt a little out of it. Part of it is the firewall/ice storm equivalent. The other is the feedback from the spell. When you freeze stuff and it turns To ice and the shatters, you know you blew the up. With electric, they have a slight seizure and die. Killing with ice just feels better.

Has anybody taken air savant, but then pumped ice as much as possible, and the taken white dragon ED slots and basically played as an air savant casting primarily cold spells? You get wings and knockdown benefits but still throwing ice around.

There already are a few:

Chain lightning, ball lightning, electric loop, lightning bolt, draconic energy burst, draconic dragon breath, sonic blast, shout, greater shout, prismatic spray, cyclonic blast, gust of wind...that is all that could come to my mind atm.

I think the OP means AoE DoT.

Maybe they could give air savants that thing Stormreaver now has? :D

I agree the OP meant persistent AoE or AoE DoT, like ice storm, firewall, acid rain/fog. However, if they did this, all sorcs would be lightning instead of only like 40%. The lack of a persistent AoE is the one big knock against Air Savant (and most cope with it by taking ice or acid secondary). Even with that weakness many people will tell you wings + KD immunity + EDs (either shiradi or DI) trump the other savants.

As things stand there is reasonable balance:
Water - most balanced spells, no weaknesses (has stacking Dot, AoE DoT, no save nuke, and AoE nuke)
Air - lacks AoE DoT and no save nuke, but makes up for it with survivability (90% of my casters deaths comes from getting trapped or knocked down)
Earth - slightly behind the other 2 in damage output, but can spam earth grab for helpless condition and web for CC, and very few things are resistant/immune to acid
Fire - strong damage but too many immunities, and lacks stacking DoT

If I were to rate them on a scale 1-10 I would say Water 9, Electric 9, Earth 8, Fire 7, but if you give Electric an AoE DoT... it makes what's arguably the best savant inarguably the best savant and balance is lost completely.

daze efect of some electric/sonic spells is good replacement to persistent AoE. Keep these spell maximized and heighten. Especially inherent skill ability spells (electric loop, lightin bold) will have these metamagics free (no additional SPs).

Eldar's E.S. combined with electric weakening is very powerfull against bosses (until they are immune to el.spells). keep maxed and heighten too!

In rare cases, i can use ice storm for true AoE combined with sonic blast, electrict loop. should be maxed too.

Fire is very strong in epic giant hold. Especially in EE TOR fire is the only one that has no immunities.

Actually, Giant pyromancers are all over tor and the giant paired to the Black Dragon is immune.

On a separate note, fire lacks a stacking DoT as well as having saves in all spells above level 2, and with 2 entire zones of the game immune, its challenging to run a Fire Savant, EGH is a godsend. Both Tor and FoT have ice dragons set to make a hassle, making fire specs very desirable right now.
