Anyone else think the coincidental timing of this maintainence extension is also secretly to perform maintainence on gamer social lives? "What do you mean I cant play DDO tonight? Sigh...I guess I'll take the wife out for a nice dinner instead."

I've seen some of these wives. These guys would rather be gaming.

Plan: Make 1 million alt accounts, complain on this thread, make $32k, Turbine will say to the board "we got 1 million new players this month!" Everybody wins, except Kaz. :p
(gawd I'm bored, time to go to Home Depot and get the kitchen light replaced. Wife will be happy, kids will be able to see the dishes they have to wash, everyone wins, except Kaz.)

I wonder what the shipping cost would be for $32k in pennies...

The irony...
As of yesterday, I had no intention to play DDO today at all. My work ends at 5, and I am going to see my girlfriend around 6-6:30 (we have a presentation to attend at 7).
Last night I made an AH bid on something I really want, but had no buyout. I realized I will be likely outbid, but what can you do? Wait, the auction ends around 5 pm today. Hmm, I can do something.
So I arranged to leave work an hour early. That way I could get home, check AH, snipe the item if needed, then go see my GF.
Now that downtime is extended... I get to see my GF an hour earlier! Happy Valentine's Day!

I'm still not going outside, HRUMPH !!!
do you think if turbines isp went down for 24 hours, turbine might want the billing date pushed back a day? (we wont talk about the great DNS issue of 2012) it's the point of it. they seem to only be fixing billing and ddo store junk and not game bugs from update 11 (some longer)

It's not fair to make fun of this. If we assume a total of 10 days (240 hours) downtime per year the poor guy would lose more than 300$ per 100 years of subscribing to DDO.

Coming home to surprise the gf one hour earlier on valentines day. This has some epic fail potential right here. Let her know you are going to be early, just to prevent the even remote chance at stumbling into something you don't want to see.

You would get credit or something if the downtime was unexpected. They have had it posted since last week.
At the 1 year sub price, that's down to .27 a day. You can likely find that much in your couch.

A bit harsh...BUT I would like to know why this takes so long compared to other downtimes {incl. MotU Expansion}!
And I'd like to know why they couldn't use this time to go bug hunting - Surely Billing etc. doesn't take up the man-hours of the usual staff?

24 hours? Boo. I wanted to play tonight. :(
Oh well. Guess I'll just have to watch a movie or play PoE or something. Maybe do my taxes...

She does not live with me. That's why I wrote "get home, check AH, snipe the item if needed, then go see my GF."
I suppose showing up at her place an hour early has the same "potential", but considering she has a 70-year old female friend currently visiting, it is rather unlikely. I will call in any case :)

there's no human way for a billing system upgrade to need 24 hours
and even more with the server games, while only ddostore and myddo would be affected(as common maintenance)
something stinks out there, just be careful :P

If I'm reading between the lines (based on what Tolero has said), it sounds like the billing stuff is shared with the same servers as the game clients. So, if someone goes into the store, and makes a purchase through PayPal, and it takes a long time, the game actually servers from the lag because of that. So, I think it sounds like what they're doing is actually moving the store stuff external to the game stuff, in order to alleviate certain lag spike issues that arise from problematic store queries.
So yes, something like that could indeed take 24 hours. Probably 12 to do it, and another 12 to test it to make sure all the components work correctly.

Seriously down times only seem to happen when ive got time to play, events, bonuses only happen when i *can't* play, maybe its fate/ the universe trying to tell me something?

Just a personal theory here:
1). Billing system software getting major version upgrade that would wipe billing info on the server, necessitating a full backup of billing and account data.
2). Since active files cannot be backed up, and any account logged on is considered active, they had to "boot everyone from the pool" to get said backup.
3). Since the server is effectively being rebuilt in the preceding processes, perform major hardware maintenance... Disk testing/replacement, etc.
4), Load new Billing software.
5). Restore billing data.
Having been in a system management position since the mid 80's I can see the process described above taking 24 hours, +/-.
Still, as the disclaimer above states, this is just a theory.

That would be awesome.
I have 3 VIP accts and I see people crying about getting an extra day on their sub's. Really? Do you ask for money off your monthly car payment when you can't use your car because it's in for maintenance?
If there is going to be 'any' improvement to the game then downtime is to be expected. If it's going to take a full day to make a 'major' improvement in the game, as the above quote suggests, then I have no problem with that. From what I see they are not just doing maintenance they are doing a repair, and repairs take longer. Sorry about the car analogy, but I'm a car guy, I think in car terms, totally computer illiterate.

Three trips to Home Depot for parts. 50 trips outside to flip the breaker. Light installed. Wife home (and happy). Kids doing dishes (and unhappy). Arms ache from reaching up to install the light. Off tomorrow. Nothing good on TV. Going to bed with hopes that the outage will cease at the announced time.

I'm sorry, but what in the hell could they be possibly doing to the servers that would require a 24hr downtime? Even if you were to replace the entire system of servers and networking hardware and reinstall OS's, or a complete rebuild of the entire games software coding from the ground up with actual testing would warrant such a long downtime!!! However I doubt that is so much as what is actually being done, so congratulations is in order for the longest downtime I have ever experienced from any MMO operations division!!! Way to go TURBINE.
