Going to TR an elf ranger following unbongwah's Tempest Trapmonkey (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=277496), and this is the build I came up with.

My reason as to why this specific path:
1. 15 Rgr to get CSW and FOM, plus 2 extra FE damage. Didn't take 18 Rgr because the 5 PRR is not much and 5% double strike chance is only about 2.5% increase in my dps as no off-hand proc.

2. 2 Ftr for 2 extra feats; IC:Ranged and Precision to combine power with Manyshot + Blitz(?)/Fury; plus Precision helps against raid boss to bypass fort.

3. 3 Rog to get 2d6 sneak attack damage, and wand & scroll healing ability from early level and even into late game. UMD and Concentration maxed for effective self heal late game (early game mainly uses wand whip and that's why concentration isn't invested).

4. Move Silently maxed as I personally like the stealth game play, and solo quite often.

5. Disable Device, Search and Spot maxed for traps, as well as ability to see invis/sneak monsters. Wild Instinct gives another +10 to spot, so a few points might be allocated toward another skill, but currently I enjoy having high spot without needing to re-equip or re-buff.

6. Open lock is invested whenever possible; this has to do with the fact that there are a few checks with very high DC. Also with the fact that I don't have anything better to add. Other skills that I have considered are bluff and haggle. Though with golden guile I can reach quite decent bluff level (low 40 ish), and haggle doesn't help in combat.

7. Took Ranger Skill Boost IV for the extra action boosts, useful on lower level for traps, and higher level for reaching Deadly Weapon's UMD without consuming charges for haste/damage boost.

8. For self heal, I can UMD Heal scroll no fail (with equips), CSW and Rejuvenation Cocoon with Empowered Healing active.

Now, a few questions:
(1) I only lose 5 PRR and 5% double strike chance from not taking 18 levels of Ranger right? If there's a big damage lose then I will have to redesign my build.

(2) Should I not take open lock and choose something else? I like starting with 12 Int as it allows me to max Concentration, Disable Device, Move Silently, Search, Spot, and UMD with ranger at level 20 (so on my rog level I can spend more points toward rog specific skills). If you were to choose between Open Lock, Haggle, or Bluff, which would you choose?

(3) Any suggestion on what epic feat should I take at level 21/24? Right now I think the Epic Skill is pretty attractive. Overwhelming Critical and Combat Archery on the other hand, requires me changing a few feats. OC would shift me toward more melee focused (take out IC:Ranged or Empowered Healing for Cleave); while Combat Archery will boost my burst damage with Manyshot + Epic Moment since it became +3[W] with Point Blank.

(4) If I were to use hand-wraps and go for monk levels instead of fighters; how many monk levels should I be taking to be effective in unarmed combat?

(5) Finally, not particular build related, but how does Manyshot work with Blitz? On wiki it says melee damage, but on forum there are people saying Manyshot + Blitz/Fury = Highest damage burst. Quite confusing.

1. I don't see any other reason to go 18 ranger than going tempest 3, apart from getting some SP.

Although a +2.5% increase in dps can be a lot - if you are dealing a lot of damage already.
2. Keeping Open Lock at 4ish ranks will still allow you to take care of most locks - maybe not on the first try, but you'll still be able to unlock. I value Bluff highly since it allows you to deal more sneak attack damage.
3. Epic Skill is automatically granted. Overwhelming Critical is a nice choice. Combat Archery is currently bugged and does not give any bonus.
4. A single monk level grants access to the fast attack animation of monks, so from a dps perspective, this may be enough. Monk 2 grants an extra feat, Monk 3 offers access to the philosophy feat, and consequently the option to the Grasp of the Earth Dragon Ki move which makes the party stun/daze immune. Monk 4 offers the next step of unarmed strike, enhancing your base damage by +0.5[W], i.e. you get +1.75 damage on average.
5. Can't answer this one, unfortunately.

Thanks for the input!

So I need to find out whether 2.5% total dps loss is worth 1d6 sneak damage, 1 strength, and +30% scroll healing; whether the monk fast attack speed worth the lose of damage (for 2 monk); and whether I want to boost my melee damage potential at the loss of a few ranged burst damage or self healing effectiveness.

For me, the +30% scroll healing answers the question pretty well. :P

Splashing monk offers another interesting option: Stunning Fist. Stunned mobs are helpless, and thus prone to sneak attacks, even if you are playing alone.
A build which carried this to it's extremes was the prodigy (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=258272).

you could alternatively be half elf rogue dilettante and take some artificer instead of rogue

you lose a feat for some arti casting and a weak lever puller

unbongwah
02-04-2013, 10:52 AM
You also lose a couple spell slots, some SPs, and HiPS; but I don't consider any of that a big deal.
OL doesn't need to be maxed out to be useful as long as you've got good gear. Bluff + stealth is nice, esp. if you solo a lot; lets you stealth-pull mobs one by one so you can murder `em in dark corners. :D [I always have one Haggle-bot per server; but I prefer it to be, say, a CHA-based bard, not a MCed rgr.]
Combat Archery is currently broken and req's base DEX 21, so I don't consider it a viable option for this build. OC is a modest but nice little DPS bonus; though I'm not sure if OC or Tempest III adds more DPS.

This build will have 12 feats total (7 base + 1 human + 2 ftr + 2 epic); I think given your stated goals I would lean towards spreading them out thus:

Melee DPS: D/M/SA (Tempest pre-reqs), Power Atk, IC:Slash, khopesh
Ranged DPS: IC:Ranged, Precision, maybe PBS
Survivability: Toughness, Emp Heal, Quicken

A HE version w/rog dilly & arty splash as cru121 recommends loses a feat (probably PBS) and 10% heal amp; but gains a little more SA. Or could go AA instead, which compensates for the lost feat (only need two feats for AA w/arty splash rather than 3 for Tempest).

Thanks guys.

After doing some research on the forum, I have decided to go with 15 rgr / 4 rog / 1 mnk.

-This gets me 3 more SA damage from SA training II, Rogue Haste Boost II, Subtle Backstabbing I, a bit more saves, and unarmed attack style/speed at the loss of 1 feat, 1 str (2 if counting human adaptability), and 1 BAB.
-Due to not taking OTWF in the previous build I actually got more to-hit while in handwraps, and if I have trouble hitting with weapon I can always UMD divine power.
-Feat wise didn't take khopesh; though it's still possible I slot it and delay taking empowered healing to level 21 (still one more feat at 24, probably going for point blank if that's the case).
-Going rog instead of helf + arti because of the sneak attack training I and II (6 + 2d6 SA damage vs 3d6 SA damage), haste boost, and -10% threat.
-Swapped out Open Lock for Bluff (and because of 4 rog levels, bluff is near maxed).

Thanks guys.

After doing some research on the forum, I have decided to go with 15 rgr / 4 rog / 1 mnk.

I like this.

The two different healing options are nice, although I think that Maximize (150 extra spell power for 25) would be a better investment than empower healing (75 extra spell power for 10 sp) - probably not from a SP efficiency point of view, but from a healing-per-cast point of view. (From an SP efficiency POV, you are better off not using either of these metamagics as soon as you have 90 or more devotion spell power.)

On my Paladin, I took Quicken and Maximize for healing himself in battle. Quicken looks like a good idea for the level 21 feat.

For the IC: Ranged it's worth mentioning that you are dumping the to-hit-stat for ranged attacks, and will not have a 95% hit rate with the bow. However, Manyshot is still a nice addition.
A second thing might be an issue: Using Bows will uncenter you, which means that you slowly lose Ki (not much of an issue), and you will need to reactivate your stance (which means you lose DPS if you don't).

Rejuvenation Cocoon (Primal Avatar (http://ddowiki.com/page/Primal_Avatar)) is pretty nice and can only be boosted w/Emp Heal.

Hey, thanks.

Reason for going empowered healing, like unbongwah said, is because of rejuvenation cocoon; since maximize doesn't affect it. And I use it most of the time, it's good temp hp and dot heal, which means I can fight while it's healing me. So it's actually 3 different healing option: 1 high temp hp with dot, 1 csw, and 1 scroll healing. Rej main heal, scroll as a follow up heal (if I take a huge spike of damage, Rej -> heal scroll) and csw as filler or if I can't get heal scroll off. Rej's main drawback is 12 second cool down, so between cooldown I need some back up heal. Quicken will be nice, so I might take that at 21.

I have similar stats right now for my ranged, only exception is that I have +2 to-hit from racial enhancement. But I didn't notice many miss popping up except in EE fighting boss. Thanks for pointing that out though, I need to find an upgrade to my bow now, still using silver longbow.

Fair enough, this has some synergies indeed.
