Upgrading Items (Purple Dragon Favour)

Ok say i have a armour piece (Embrace of the Spider Queen for eg) and its BtCoE

Can i upgrade the item with say Knights Loyalty with a toon that has the 375 favour and then pass the item to another toon?

Or will the upgrading make it BTC?

You will be able to upgrade it then pass it to the toon that needs it as long as you don't equip it
