To get started with the DDO Mac client, download the installer at this link (UPDATED URL): http://content.turbine.com/sites/clientdl/ddo/ddolive.dmg
Instructions to Install:
COPY the installer URL. (We recommend that players not attempt to hand-type the above URL)
Download the file (this is a full client download for this initial preview, and may take longer than your typical DDO game client downloads on PC do)
Upon download, open the .dmg file
Drag the DNDLauncher .app to a place you see fit (Applications folder is the standard place)
Run the launcher, patch up, and begin to play DDO on your Mac!
Let us know how DDO runs on your Mac
Please note that this is a beta version of the DDO Mac client, so if you experience any anomalies, please be sure to tell us about it here in the beta forum so our engineers can investigate if necessary!
Mac-related bug reports should be sent under the “Other” category, and include the word “Mac” in your summary of the issue (that’s the text box entitled “Please provide a brief summary of the bug:*”).
You can also post feedback in our Mac beta forum (http://forums.ddo.com/forumdisplay.php?f=265).
Be sure to review the Mac Known Issues and FAQ below!
Thanks for trying out the DDO Mac client!
Known Issues
Upon closing, the DDO client will sometimes generate a crash error even though the client did not actually crash.
Right-click reporting in chat does not generate a ticket properly. Please submit spam and harassment reports via the traditional ticketing system.
The "gameplay" section of the ticketing system does not generate a ticket properly. If you experience difficulty submitting an in-game ticket, please submit one via our support site at http://support.turbine.com
The "take screenshot" feature does not work.
Rainbow-like graphical anomalies appear if Glow Mapping and/or Post-Effects are toggled on.
Some payment methods in the Store do not work properly, and the "Even more payment methods" does not display properly. If you experience this issue, please include the payment type you were attempting to use in your bug report (e.g. WebMoney, BOKU).
FAQ
What is the DDO Mac client?
The Mac client is a version of the DDO game that runs natively on the Apple Mac operating system, without a requirement for Windows emulation software.
What OSX versions are supported?
At present, the DDO Mac client is supported for players running OSX Lion (10.7) and OSX Mountain Lion (10.8). While some functionality may work on older versions of OSX, only 10.7 and 10.8 are supported.
What are the system requirements?
These system requirements are based on the hardware used during the porting and validation effort. As a result, they reflect the newest hardware available from Apple. While we don’t want to discourage playing DDO on older machines running OSX 10.7 and above, we have not been able to verify the quality of the experience.

What are the differences between the PC and Mac versions?
Rendering: The Mac client uses OpenGL for rendering, instead of DirectX. OpenGL renders all DirectX 9 content at ultra-high resolution, however features implemented using DirectX 10 and 11 will not be available in the initial release of the Mac client. Therefore, the following features will not render in the Mac client:
Shadow maps (instead of shadow volumes)
Soft shorelines
Soft particles
Volumetric sunlight
Ambient occlusion (DirectX 11 only)
Interactive water (DirectX 11 only)
Key-mapping: Some of the default key-mapping for the OSX client will be different than the Windows client. Standard Windows keys and key-mappings for which there are no Mac equivalents include:
Print screen
Hide UI
Num-Lock
Note: While key-mapping functions correctly, the Mac client Beta UI will erroneously display an ‘Unsupported’ message for all mapped keys. This issue will be resolved in the Mac client Release.
Is the Mac version the same as, or similar to Wine?
No. The DDO Mac client is a native OSX client that has been built to be run exclusively on OSX. It does not utilize a Windows emulation environment, such as Wine, VMware, or Parallels.
If I'm running on Bootcamp, do I need to reinstall DDO?
Yes. The Mac client is an entirely new and different DDO client, which must be installed separately. The Windows client will not run on the Mac OS.

Sweet! I tested the Lamannia client and was greeted with almost double the FPS I got in Windows natively. I look forward to trying this once it is finished downloading, best Christmas present ever Tolero!

By 'it's on live servers' do you mean it uses Cannith, Orien, etc.., or some special mac-only server that has the current-live stuff.

On Mac OS 10.8.2 I am getting a message telling me that the app is damaged and should be deleted. But it appears to be related to the Gatekeeper settings again. The app still isn't signed right. To use it on Mac OS 10.8, open the System Preferences, go to the Security panel, unlock the padlock at the bottom-left, and allow your Mac to run apps from anywhere. After you have run the launcher, you can restore the security settings.
Remember devs, to sign an app, every executable piece of code in the package must be signed, and once a package has been signed, nothing can change after that. Even a .DS_Store file added by the Finder after signing will invalidate the package.
I logged in to Orien. Everything I tried worked. The chat text was fine. Voice chat seems to be ok (I was only able to try mic test though). The app consistently produced more than 100 fps -usually more like 130. I ran through Phiarlin and Tangleroot Gorge for my tests. I saw over 400 fps in places, but mostly when staring at uninteresting doorways etc. The graphics are astonishingly smooth compared to my Windows setup, but this is a much faster machine with a retina display (which Open GL is fully exploiting -the text is amazing). It also has an SSD which makes load times very very quick. I think the damage numbers from melee look about right now. I did not test big numbers that my sorc produces though.
I saw two glitches. The control key does not work. I had to put two-fingers on the track pad and click to get a ctrl-click. And the game crashes in the Awesonium framework when you quit the app. But so far that's it. I am going to switch to this client for regular use, provided my mouse and headset work (I have no reason to believe they won't at this point).
Great job!
EDIT: I spoke too soon on a number of these things. 3:00 AM talk. It is not using the Retina display to its full capacity, and I did run into the typing in chat issue again, I will make a new post with some of the things that are going on.

Upon installing and opening the .dmg, clicking directly on DNDlauncher came up with the message
"DNDLauncher" is damaged and can't be opened. You should eject the disk image
Moving the launcher to applications came up with the error:
"DNDLauncher" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the trash
Edit: Never mind, thank you Katie for explaining how to fix.

Just to let others know, I'm currently testing it on an older machine (MBP 13' with 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB) on Mountain Lion, and can play fine on ultra-high settings with just a minor glitch, being the texts floating over objects (like NPC, collectables, etc) a little blurry (didn't even have this before trying auto-detect option in settings). Nice job devs! :)

This is very good news! I was waiting for a mac client for a very long time.
I'm going to try installing it on my macbook with Snow Leopard (10.6.8). But probably it will make me upgrade my OS and perhaps drop Bootcamp on my Mac ;)

For what its worth, client consistently crashes on launch for me running OS X 10.6.8
Presumably this is to be expected since Turbine is only supporting running under 10.7 and above, but it really is a shame (for me) since on a 27" iMac that I also use as a video/dvd player, I am loathe to give up Front Row, and thus won't be upgrading to 10.7...
In case it's relevant, my system is a first generation 27" iMac, 2.8 GHz Core i5, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5750

Seems to run. Crashes on exit (I saved a crash log). Interacts pathologically with a mouse that happens to be on a Wacom tablet -- it can't mouselook correctly, and does crazy things like always slamming all the way up or down regardless of actual mouse motion.

So it really does work great -just to get that out of the way. But having tested it more thoroughly, here are some of the things that are still going a bit haywire:
1) Typing in various fields will get disabled sometimes. You can't type in chat, in the search fields in bags or the AH for example. Nothing happens when you press the keys. You have to completely quit and restart the app to restore typing. I mention this first because it is the only important show-stopping bug I have seen. Communication with fellow players is important!
2) Floaty damage numbers over mobs heads do not display properly if there are three or more digits involved. My sorc was supposedly hitting things for 1 to 9 points of damage, but those numbers were really in the hundreds and thousands. They showed up correctly in the combat logs, and did the correct damage to mobs -it was just a display error. EDIT: it's actually two or more digits -any damage bigger than 9 will show only the most significant digit.
3) I saw a few flickering tiles here and there, but nothing that distracting. In Overgrowth, there is light coming through windows in the lodge somewhere on the left side as you advance, and i noticed the floor flickering a lot where the light hit it. But things like that were few and far between really.
4) Contrary to what I said before, the retina display is not being used at full capacity. The pixels are doubled and they are very crisply drawn -you can see it pretty easily if you look close. I can live with that of course, but the real reason for bringing this up, is that I can't change the full screen resolution in the graphics options. Nor can I use aliasing. Setting the Windowed resolution worked, but the pixels were always doubled.
5) I can't change the brightness, contrast or gamma. This is an important area for improvement -the game is kind of dark by default and I would like to brighten it up, otherwise I may keep falling into pits of spikes (thanks for letting me know DM).
6) I don't know if you care that much or not, but neither the launcher nor the client will run on Mac OS 10.6. They both have link issues. The client requires a newer version of libcurl than that found on 10.6. I can't remember what the launcher was missing -it tells you when you run it though. I personally think 10.6 support would be really nice to have if it is just a few things that need to be tweaked. A lot of people are still using it, and it was the base OS on some of Apple's still nice equipment -the original unibody MacBook Pros for example.
7) I mentioned earlier that the control key does not work. That only seems to be in conjunction with the trackpad. It works when clicking the mouse. There is a work-around for the track pad (two finger click) so this is not a big deal.
8) I still can't get anything nice to drop in Druid's Deep. Oh wait -maybe that is not a Mac issue. :-)
Love it. Keep up the good work.
EDIT: oh and of course you need to get that app signing sorted out. It's going to throw most people -the Mac is being very uninformative, and in fact quite misleading about what is wrong when the launcher is first run.

If I look on the crash log I wonder:
Can it be that Awesonium has a problem with ARC (Automatic Reference Counting) ?
For the game:
- Client wont take any keyboard input.
That means interaction with other player oder entering anything, starting with a char name, is not possible with this build. I was able to create chars using cut and past. Interestingly the game use for past ctrl + v instead of Apple + v. That would mean the game bypasses the OS for dealing with the keyboard. Very bad idea.
- Ingame DDO Store is slow as hell.
Why not simply use a web view in this place. Surely what faster then Awesuckium.
Beside of this, the client looks very promising.

If you are displaying HTML pages, a UIWebView would be a much better choice. But this does depend on the context in which you are trying to use it of course. Do give it a look if you have the time.

About the signing issue: the message the Mac OS is putting up, "the application is damaged", is because something has modified the executable binaries after 'codesign' has been run. If you are inserting your own crc's into the binaries after signing, this is what is causing this problem. codesign inserts its own crcs into the data fork, and doing anything else to the file after that sets off sirens for Gatekeeper -it is no longer an unknown developer, it is now a possibly maliciously altered file that is being dealt with. I had to remove crc insertion in a product I developed for this reason.

Okay, testing this on another machine, I do notice a few things:
1. Resolution is ignored fullscreen; it's always native resolution. Or at least, it was native resolution even when it said it was set to 1024x768.
2. No visible effect from either of the options under Troubleshooting. This matters because the laptop tends to run a bit hot, and we don't really need >60fps on a machine with a fixed LCD refresh rate, and really 30 would be fine.
This is on a late-2011 MBP (6770 with 1GB memory, 8GB RAM). Game runs beautifully, but it would be nearly as beautiful at half that frame rate, and run cooler.

Its WebView on Cocoa. UI Classes belong to the iOS Framework. https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Cocoa/Reference/WebKit/Classes/WebView_Class/Reference/Reference.html
Still you are right. A WebView will probably yield better results.
Katie, do you have by chance a tip how to get the keyboard working in the client?
What bewilders me. The client uses a different key combination to past text than the OS itself. Leave me with a bad feeling that the OS is not involved here.

Initial testing: MBP 13" retina (2.5 i5; 8gb RAM; HD4000)
had a few hiccups getting the initial patching updates done.. why do we need to re-download every splash screen? but logged in ok
Crashed 1/2 way through intro movie. 2nd load up skipped it, loaded in
BOYEAH, it works! ~60fps in default settings.
Commetfall, Destruction, Bladebarrier, RS Aura & Burst, Mass Aid spell GFX all working as intended (but see list below)
Fear effect from Mummy Lord GFX effect as intended
changing screen res does nothing (as others have posted)
had trouble getting RS2 aura going with nothing selected. If I selected myself then popped aura, it worked & then can have no target or different soft target & it works.
no damage/healing numbers except in combat log
chat no go
looks fantastic :D great job!
I am so buying an SSD for my desktop based on my MBP load times

Oops. Thanks. I have been developing for iOS for a while now and forgot. The problem with WebView in general is that it may not be easy to insert it into the view encapsulating the game. The Awesomium thing seems to be targeted at displaying in a straight up ARGB frame buffer without specific knowledge of the hierarchy encapsulating the buffer. I doubt WebView is as forgiving. I always use it in standard view hierarchies so I don't know how it would work in any other context.
do you have by chance a tip how to get the keyboard working in the client?
Not really. It's only been broken twice for me now. Both times, a full restart of the client fixed it.

I have a vague thought that webview should be embeddable, and if not, hey, just run it in an undisplayed frame and copy the frame's contents... :)
Anyway, it's not perfect, but this is a heck of a lot nicer than the Wine wrapper stuff I've seen.
Should I submit a crash log from a crash? If so, how/where?

2nd load up at home & chat etc working.
Ran through GoP & saw a couple of GFX glitches on the 3 imprisoned spectres prior to the end fight (looks like energon cubes from G1 transformers, maybe an effect is not correctly rendering?)
Its still very nice. But still want to change the screen res

I really really really want to try this mac client. But each time I download it (on my 5th attempt now) it either stops with an error, or it only downloads 2.15GB, thinks it is finished... then of course when launching the 2.15GB .dmg file, it won't open the image because it's not recognized.
So now I'm downloading for the 5th time. Is something up with the hosting server? Or am I really just that unlucky? I have a great internet connection, and this is the only file I appear to have problems downloading. Can somebody torrent the full dmg? That would be better.

Tried out the client yesterday on my MacBook Pro 2009.
As noted in the system requirements, a Core i5/17 is needed. The game came up and was working but, unlike the refined DirectX rendering while in Boot Camp, the graphics and frame rate were choppy with this Mac and its Core2Duo chip. Can the client be optimized for better GPU usage? Brightness/gamma wasn't working (noted by others). Sound and key support with my Logitech USB headphones and G13 keypad were OK (the keypad software was not as versatile as in Windows).
Chat worked for me briefly. I think it died just after trying out some of the attacks I programmed into my keypad.
I'll end up sticking with Windows mode until the client is refined a bit or I acquire a stronger Mac. Overall, a GREAT effort that should please many Mac owners once it's ready. Grats to the devs and engineers--keep it up.

Tried it on early 2011 15-inch MBP. Everything maxed, but no anti-aliasing. It seems to do a lot of hitching (stuttering) which was kind of weird - I see the same thing on my PC, as if somehow it cannot pre-load enough game assets into memory.
I also somehow got the game to see an offline friend as online. She logged off, but she still showed up in my friends list. I could still send tells to her and the game never told me there was an error because she's offline.

Hi,
Thanks. I wish I knew the reason. You make good points, but I am actually downloading to a 2011 Mac mini, Extended drive, and 300 GB free.
I have also tried downloading it to my Win7 computer (NTFS). Both stop the download at 2.15 GB. Yet, I can download a 16 GB torrent from elsewhere without a problem. I'm a bit perplexed. Hopefully I will be enlightened soon and the answer will come to me. But right now, I can only dream about this Mac client.

I can get the Mac client into "no typing in text fields" by taking a screen grab using command-shift-4. After you take your snapshot, you can no longer type in any text fields in the game.
I also managed to fix it on the fly by typing command-H which hides the game. When you bring the game forward again, you can type once more. This might be useful for those that run into the problem. It definitely beats restarting the client.

Brilliant! Hit it right on the nose! It is downloading great now @ 61% complete so far, so it's already way passed what it was getting before.
On a side note, I'm not noting that on both my Mac & Windows computer, I was using Chrome to download. Just for curiosity I'm going to try downloading again with Safari and see if it gaks again. I've never notice before, but also never tried to download a large file like that with my browser. So maybe it's all browsers, or maybe just Chrome.

For what its worth, it downloaded fine for me with Google Chrome. My guess would be it isn't an issue with the browser itself (but may well have something to do with a malformed/malfunctioning plist/preferences file for Chrome).

I originally set up this account for my daughter. Katie Seaglen was her Wizard101 name so it seemed like a good choice. She lost interest quickly, but of course I got hooked. So thanks for the compliments but unless I lose a few pounds, grow younger, and change gender, you probably won't be as interested :-)
P.S. I really wish it were possible to change forum names.

You don't have to go into Preferences. Just hold down Control and click on the app icon, choose Open from the menu and that'll give you the option to bypass Gatekeeper for a single app without asking you again. :)
Oh and THANK YOU for the Mac client Turbine! Just found out about it today and it makes a great xmas present ;)

Loving the Mac client - now I don't need to load a Parallels W7 image to play every week!
However...
As others have said there are a few bugs. I don't mind some "blooming" and halo effect glitches, but not having parts of the dungeon render at all, leaving a solid coloured wall you can't see through, is a pain. Imagine doing Rainbow in the Dark with no light and that is what it looks like. Once you pass through the wall, things render again until the next time however by then you might have dropped off a cliff or been mobbed by wights. Not to mention that you can't always guess where the trap box is if you need to disable one that is in the unrendered mess!
Also, if key bindings could be saved that would stop me having to spend ten minutes every login! It seems the keymap isn't being read, so this looks programmatical rather than machine based.
Can't change screen res - not a problem as I run in fullscreen anyway but sometimes would be nice if I have a map up behind the game so I can see both!
Looking forward to updates!

I am unable to rotate the camera while pressing the scroll wheel button. This prevents me from previewing and buying armor kits for example.
I am also seeing the sectional clipping seen by others. I have to occasionally run through solid colored walls into the next area. This happened a ton in Tear of Dhakan.
I have been using the second beta client exclusively since it was released. It is quite far along, but it needs some more love. I don't remap keys myself, but I could see that being a deal breaker for those that do.
Edit: I just remembered one other little problem. The client is not listening for new audio devices becoming available. If you plug in a headset after starting the client, it will not add it to the list of available devices. You have to quit and restart the client to have the device recognized.

My guild sees my chars coming online, so it seems to be client related.

sounds like it's something in the graphics, which you should be able to change before selecting your character. Change your graphics settings to their lowest possible from the character select screen and then try logging in from there.

I'm running on an early 2009 17" MacBook Pro...2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Dup, 4 GB 1067 DDR3... NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 512 MB... OS C10.8.2 Mountain Lion...L2 Cache: 6 MB
So far I'm seeing pretty much what Katie_Seaglen posted above.
So it really does work great -just to get that out of the way. But having tested it more thoroughly, here are some of the things that are still going a bit haywire:
1) Typing in various fields will get disabled sometimes. .....
3) I saw a few flickering tiles here and there, but nothing that distracting.
<Also openings in VON3 were just blank white until I stepped through. EEEK>
5) I can't change the brightness, contrast or gamma. This is an important area for improvement -the game is kind of dark by default and I would like to brighten it up, otherwise I may keep falling into pits of spikes (thanks for letting me know DM).
<Yes, it's very dark. I fell in a lot of holes, got stuck in corners, even more than usual ;-) >
7) I mentioned earlier that the control key does not work. That only seems to be in conjunction with the trackpad. It works when clicking the mouse. There is a work-around for the track pad (two finger click) so this is not a big deal.
<I didn't try the touch pad yet. The "extra" keys on my A4Tech mouse don't work. I tried installing USB overdrive to no avail. So this is likely a mouse driver problem not a DDO problem>
Love it. Keep up the good work..
I'm also having sound problems. DDO won't recognize my headset/mic combo, only the built in sound.
I'm so happy! I actually am Really looking forward to reformatting my hard drive with a much smaller Boot Camp partition.

There are some tips that helped people in this thread I think. Make sure you are using Safari, or the tool someone else recommended earlier. If you turned gatekeeper on in your security prefs that will make the app appear corrupt in 10.7. Gatekeeper is present but disabled by default in 10.7 so that normally wouldn't be the problem.
Is it the dmg or the app that you are having trouble with?

iMac 27inch opened after RTFMing enough times to note I had to move the file to applications, which took a few minutes, then it ran first try. Was pleasantly surprised to see servers were live, had only read far enough in thread to think that Lamannia would be my only choice.
Opened at my max resolution (2560 x 1440). Re-mapped some of my keys. Looks great. Didn't run any quests yet.
BTW, Chrome worked fine. OSX 10.8.2 is fine. Happy Happy Joy Joy.
EDIT: For whoever it was that said they were going to reformat their hard-drive and decrease the size of the BootCamp partition, you hopefully were kidding. You can resize the partition, or remove it, without reformatting. At least with 10.7 or higher you can.

It works just fine, after playing a bit with graphic settings. I found the same issues already mentioned (it doesn't keep key settings, sometimes chat doesn't work). The only thing not already mentioned is that you can't adjust the screen brightness/gamma (aside from the system) which makes the game a little bit dark.
Anyway, great job! Can't wait to delete my WinXP partition.

Just loaded it and started playing around. The only things I've noticed so far is the key bindings not sticking and while I'm actually doing the key binding, it eventually gets hung up and I cant click anything at all with the left mouse button. Therefore, I cant select anything, close panels etc. I have to relog in order for the left mouse to work again and that causes me to have to start mapping keys all over again and it hangs up...again. It will be nice eventually but not playable for me atm.
Also, the floaty names arent readable.

I don't know if this is the proper place to report a bug on the Mac client, but here it is:
The damage report that shows up above the head of enemies when you hit them is wrong. It looks like a only the first digit of the damage shows up.
Also, in the Quest XP screen, the bonus/penalty percentage is wrong. Where it should be, for example, 20%, it's showing up 2%.
I think there should be other places where this issue is happening. I'm using a MBP 13'' with OSX 10.8.2
Hope this helps.

I'm have a Logitech headset with an USB interface (which provides additional logical interfaces for both audio in/out). It works fine on windows and on Mac.
But inside the Mac DDO client, when I have the headset plugged in, the option for selecting the audio capture device is greyed out with the built in microphone selected. The audio output goes fine to the headset, but I can't use it as an audio capture device.
Is this a known issue (or it's by design) or it is my headset model? Anybody else have this same problem?
Thanks.

Hello Tolero.
I was wondering if we could get an update on the Mac client. It has been just over a month since we last heard anything.
There a few issues I think people are focussed on and it would be very nice to hear about any progress on these, or even just to have them acknowledged:
1) key binding. Not being able to persistently bind keys is a huge show-stopping problem for many potential testers.
2) graphical occlusion. Not being able to see past opaque walls in otherwise clear passages is problematic to say the least. This only happens after a while, and requires the client to be restarted when it does.
3) various numbers are displayed with 1 digit only. This is not game breaking but does detract from play quite a bit.
4) text entry disabled. Actually I haven't seen this in weeks and there is a trivial work-around when it happens (command-H), but for new testers it can be seriously off-putting.
5) polychromatic polygons. Not game-breaking, but distracting.
There are other issues obviously, and acknowledgement of those would be nice also, but I think the ones listed are the most pressing.
It obviously took a huge effort to get to where we are, let's take this home :-)
Thanks!

I'm running on a 2012 Macbook Air as well. The game looks and plays perfectly but my machine heats up to very unsafe levels very quickly. Not sure if this is a beta only thing or if my computer is simply not capable of handling the game. I think it's a temporary issue though because it overheats even when i set the graphics and resolution to minimum.

Hey all, been away from the game for about 2 years, but seeing that there was a Mac client coming out, I'm interested in coming back.
Having major issues (read kernel panics) trying to mount the .dmg file. Have downloaded in Chrome, Safari and now vial Folx. I get a pretty rainbow disk and then after a while - bam! Please restart the computer.

The frame rate is under direct control of the software. It's a programmable option just like anything else. The only role hardware plays is putting an upper limit on what can physically be accomplished.

I too am unable to use text communication (guild/party chat) after making graphics adjustments unless I restart my client. The fix others have mentioned (Command "H") doesn't seem to work for me.
The game looks beautiful; however, there is a graphics flaw that is a deal breaker for me. Movement is speeding up and slowing down then speeding up then slowing down continuously in one second intervals. There is no break in video frame rate. There is continuity in the visual experience without interruption. Everything in the world seems to move at the same rate too - faster then slower, faster then slower like time was on an undulating ocean. It is very distracting.
I've experienced this on the highest and lowest graphic settings. I've experimented with manually adjusting the frame rate under Troubleshooting rather than having it sync automatically.
Anyone else having this problem?

Hi, I just want to say that I just started playing the free version of DDO (on bootcamp) and was frankly bored by Korthos Island. I would probably not have continued playing if I had not seen that there was a Mac beta. I always give second thought to gaming companies that create or port games to Mac OS and I have to say I was impressed by Turbine for making the attempt. I really do not like using windows if I can help it (i.e., gaming) and the chance to play DDO on the mac was, em, inspiring.
I ended up buying TP and upgrading to a Premium account yesterday. Regardless of how well the Mac beta works, I am glad I did (also because the game is growing on me). $20 bucks from me may not justify the time or energy Turbine put into making the Mac port but for me, it's worth every cent.

Correct, it's the regular live servers like Cannith, Orien, etc.
I am now VIP because I believe you. Oh yes! I believe there's regular live severs for Macs coming for you and me. Oh yea. mmmmm.
Hopefully sooner than later.
I am not clear on the hard drive requirements given in the quote below.
I'm concerned about how much space it will use on my hard drive.
Does the following quote mean it will use up 500GB of space on the hard drive? That's a lot of space for one program.
Or are you just saying that you think the size of the hard drive needs to be at least 500GB?
If it's not going to be used, then why is it needed?
And how much space on the hard drive does the DDO Mac Beta Client for Live Servers software take up? Sorry, I'm not clear on this.

I have the same problem....the inability to "click anything at all with the left mouse button" seemed worse when I was in a full party. A major problem as I was trying to set my keys to "push to talk".
EDIT: I find if I click the button I want to use twice during key mapping it will set. The first click won't register. Of course, if I am in a party or have toggled out oF DDO into an internet browser then the game becomes very unstable and making UI changes become too frustrating. Best to load the game and reset all key mapping before interacting with others AND never minimize the screen for another application.
- For what its worth to Turbine, Mac Client consumes CONSIDERABLY less battery power than running the game via bootcamp in Windows XP. Since I only play on laptop, particularly during business travel, this makes the MAc Client much more attractive.
- The total time to run the mac client then transition into having a character online timed at 6 minutes this morning (loading all 10 splash screens in English, French and German EVERYTIME, reaching character selection screen, then loading into the world). My perception has been that the Mac Client takes noticably longer to get me online. There will be several lines of guild chat directed towards me before I can read and respond.

Ran Necromancer's Lair (last Delera's Quest) on highest graphics setting:
- Ghouls have a green rectangle about them as though engulfed by a gelatinous cube
- Dart traps produce a pulsing glowing laser beam like line of light persisting in the air.
- The game is incredibly dark. I could barely see the pressure plates on the floor needed to open the two doors. Adjustments to gamma, contras, etc. don't seem to help. The overall darkness of the game is a distraction in all environments including towns and wilderness areas.
EDIT: The graphic performance is fantastic but ONLY on SOLO play. Performance on the highest graphics setting shuttered, flickered and became laggy in a party of a total of 3 with hirelings and pets. I switched into bootcamp and rejoined the same party via the windows client and everything worked fine. I had also had poor performance adjusting my settings when in a party of 6 while they were in a dungeon and I was still in town. My working theory is the Mac client doesnt play well with others.

I'm seeing similar visual artifacts. As well, the entire area i'm in will go completely black unless I go farther in, or turn. This can be somewhat harrowing when dealing with traps or active enemies.
Performance in a party however has been fine for me. And the client is still working correctly outside of those bugs.

After a massive update ( :-) ) it seems the keybinding issue is finally fixed, which is great! Either that or all DDO Mac clients are now using Numpad 0 for target and Numpad 1 for fire runearm!
The graphical "not rendering the path ahead" issue is still here, but much reduced. I only got it briefly (near the end) of Slavers of the Screaming Mines. Didn't get it at all in any of the L11 Jorasco quests, which is great for me. Haven't been able to go back and check the others where this was a real issue as I only really play with one character. I do play with everything turned right down though (except distances which are always on Max!)
So some good, some great, and a little bad. Thanks for working on the client :-)
Here's hoping Patch 1 fixes the last of the glitches.

I`ve been playing the mac beta without many problems since December.
I wanted to get the Menace of the Underdark expansion set. But it`s a digital download. Will it be compatible with the Mac beta?

Yes. It even seams to run better than most content. With less graphic glitches.

Yes, you'll be fine. When you buy the expansion, it behaves like an in game purchase and allows you access to areas that you would otherwise be blocked from. Think of it as a big Adventure pack.
I use both Mac and PC client with no issues between the two in regards to accessing owned content.

First of all thank you Devs for working on this.
Downloaded and updated fine. Launched fine.
Played fine, solo and group (about 2 hours gameplay).
Graphics at ultra high does not look as good as it should due to, I'm guessing, incompatibility with full retina resolution.
So all is good, and very playable, except for 2 BIG issues :)
1. Floating damage numbers does not display correctly - only shows single digit, even though it seems correct in combat log - this ti me is a game breaker.
2. Cannot adjust brightness/gamma/contrast - so the game seems awfully dark in dungeons - also a game breaker.
Has anyone figured out how to correct the above two issues? Or is it something we have to live with??

A temporary fix for the brightness issue is to create a custom OSX color profile for DDO (System Preferences - Display), turn on the advanced options and adjust the gamma (downward).

I've been without DDO for a few months as my virtual machine crashed after upgrading to windows 8. I was about to post in the suggestions forum asking when we would be expecting this, and lo and behold Google found this. THANK YOU! Using an external hard drive to run Windows on a Mac slows everything down significantly, and I am very much looking forward to playing DDO again without worrying about the external hard drive disconnecting. Did I say thank you? THANK YOU!
Finishing the download now, and I can't wait to play after my classes tomorrow. I might be able to TR before my summer job starts. So much feels.

Looks like this is still being worked on - and the work is good!
Pleased to report that energon cubes spilling from fountains are now actually showing as water.
Floaty damage numbers still only show the 1st digit (so 10-19 show as 1, 200-299 as 2 etc).
Is there any way to implement a working graphics modification? Only reason I ask, is that it may help the significant heat build up which in turn causes blank grey 'walls' to appear from certain viewpoints when moving around instances. The 'walls' are purely graphical errors and do not impede process (apart from not being able to see). They seem to exist between the 'rooms' that make up dungeons.
Eg. In Von 3 a 'room' would be the area with the 3 doors just prior to fighting the 3 lieutenants. The grey 'walls; stop viewing from that area to the corridor where the lieutenants are. If you are standing at the grey wall you have total obscured vision.
Sorry - dont have screenshots but will play on Mac today and get some to highlight the problem (Which is 100% reproducible as a product of overheating, dont know if Turbine can help here).
Still a great effort.

Please! Can you modify the client loader to NOT have to download every dam loading screen EVERY time I start it to try and play?
26meg wasted every time before I even log in.
This may not seem significant, however when gaming on the macbook I'm tethering data from my mobile, and having the additional (and seemingly unneeded) data consumption makes my allowance significantly smaller.

Someone posted a tutorial to eliminate the load screens a while back: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=408765
I tried it once but skipped the locking step at the end, so an update overwrote the file and it started doing it again. I didn't bother with it after that since I now use a script most of the time to skip the entire loader and launch the game directly into my favorite toon. It takes less than 30 seconds to start playing on an SSD unless I hit the crafting hall loading bug.

I've tried for the last 3 days to download the Mac disk image from the Akamai server. I've successfully downloaded the disk image all three times, and the disk image has verified it's integrity, however after copying the DNDLauncher over to my Applications folder, and running it, I always get the following error:
“DNDLauncher” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash.
Is there a problem the current version of the application on the disk image? Get Info says it's version 1.0 and a 32 bit app, created on Dec 13, 2012.
There's no other postings in the forum related to this, so how can I verify if it's a unique local problem to me? I've got nothing special, a Retina MacBook pro running 10.8.3.

Hi,
So I downloaded the dmg file from website and it is about 8GB. The DDO application that needs to be transferred into the application folder is an additional 10+GB. I am curious how much TOTAL Hard drive space do you need so I don't try and make space for nothing. Is it 18GB or just the 10GB or MORE? Please let me know. Thank you for your time.

There are postings about this, but they are buried in long threads. The app is not "signed" correctly. You will need to go in to System Preferences / Security and Privacy / General and "Allow applications downloaded from: Anywhere". This is a new feature called GateKeeper that was switched on by default in Mac OS 10.8.
Alternatively, just control-click on DNDLauncher and select "Open" from the popup menu. This will do a one time bypass of GateKeeper instead of disabling it system wide.

You can throw the DMG away after you copy the game to the Applications folder. You will need ~18 GB to install, but only ~10 GB after installation is complete.

I am running on 15" Early 2011 MBP
Radeon 6750 1GB
16GB Ram
SSD
Runs on ultra at 60FPS
I also get the floaty damage problem only showing 1st digit
A partial solution I noticed was to check the use n+n+n damage format. Its shows the full numbers that way but does not show the damage type icon. (Maybe a bug related to showing the damage types?)
As others have mentioned after playing for a few hours I get weird gray wall of graphic glitch from various viewpoints in multiple different quests.
Other wise all good to go I used to play a lot 3 years back when I still used PC's too lazy to play from bootcamp so sweet there is a native osx client finally.

Although I can't comment on the heating issue (although it appears to heat up less on my old machine than it did running Windows 7), I can honestly say it runs on a Late Model 2007 MacBook Pro. 2.4 Ghz Core2Duo, 4GB 667 Mhz DDR2, GeForce 8600 GT 256MB, 10.8.4. Runs great with a few slow downs in very dense areas.
Yes, I know I need a new machine but this still runs great 6 years later.

The current build links against symbols not present prior to 10.7. It simply will not run on 10.6 or lower. It might be possible to make a build that will run on 10.6, but that is up to Turbine. I don't see that happening personally. It would probably be a lot of work, 10.6 is essentially deprecated at this point, and 10.9 is right around the corner.

Its in beta, but (for me) it generally works better then either dual boot or a virtualized copy of windows (ive tried both ways). The system responds better.
The problems you'll run into from my experience:
Damage is not displayed correctly unless you use n+n+n damage format.
I have never been able to see the surface of still water, nor the underwater haze since switching. I've considered this a feature ;) its made some dungeons far more navigable.
Gamma isn't working right, so in dark dungeons you may not be able to see whats in certain corners.
Occationlly in certain dungeons you get a flat green wall between sections of the dungeon. You can't see through it, but you can move through it. Its never killed me, but it got annoying.
Ive had one dungeon where surface textures stopped loading (Clear the air, the trog nest quest in the marketplace). I couldn't see the ramps or walls or floor. I left the quest and never returned, so I do not know if it is an always thing or not. I have seen others say it is.
Overall, I prefer the native experience. I prefer to not have to into windows just to play a game. But it is up to you whether the connivence outweighs the Beta status of the client.
Personally? Worth it.
(PS. Bootcamp is still a part of MAC OS, so if you do go dual boot, all you need is a copy of Windows. It will do all the hard partition setup work for you.)

Ok, I've a new mac mini. I tried to download the mac client and then install, but that was a dead link. So I used the play while installing link. Everything seems to have installed just fine, however now, the only link to DDO I can find, either on my desktop, or on the 'finder', is to the DDO Installer. So, every time I want to log in, the installer starts, and then the installer starts the DDO client. Is there a way to find the actual client on my Mac and create a shortcut just to the client, without the installer? And, please, feel free to use small words.... I'm a total Mac newb.

yet why the hell does this need 10.7+?
The launcher, and quite probably the client use system services not present in 10.6. I haven't actually tried the client on it's own in 10.6, but it's an advanced topic using the client without the launcher, and I don't have a 10.6 installation on which to even try it anymore.
I am afraid you will simply have to move up to 10.7 to use it.
As an aside 10.9 went GM a few days ago. I hope Turbine has tried that.

Are you perhaps referring to the launcher when you speak of the "Installer"? What is it called?
A correct installation would have the "Dungeons And Dragons Online" application located in the /Applications folder. This application is called the launcher. Buried deep within it is the client app, i.e, the game itself.
If you can't find the launcher, run it the way you have been running it, but stop at the login screen. Control-click the D&D icon in the dock and use "Options / Show In Finder" to see where it is located. Be careful here, the client shows up in the dock after you start playing. This is not the thing you want to make a short cut to. It is something that the launcher runs after gathering your credentials. You need a shortcut to the launcher itself.
To make a shortcut to the launcher just drag it to the dock. Or if you look at that control-clicked menu one more time, you will see an "Options / Keep In Dock" option which achieves the same thing.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Katie, the Finder and shortcut info was exactly what I needed. For some reason, under "Applications", only the DDO Installer was showing, but the ctrl click (right click for me, because I have that enabled) was able to locate the actual launcher file and I pinned it to the dock. Much appreciate the instructions.

Since it's no longer an NDA issue, i've been playing on 10.9 for a while. Works as well as anything else.
in terms of OS support, given how fast Apple revs things, there's no real point in supporting, (and having to test against) 10.6. Wouldn't be surprised if an update dumped 10.7 at some point.

Get Info on the file that was downloaded, It should be about 8 GB in size. Anything less than that failed to download correctly.

Hi all,
I just bought a new iMac, and I can't get the Mac Client to download. I've tried downloading from the link at the front of this thread, and from the link on the DDO Home Page.
Whenever I hit the download links, it starts, download about 2 megs, then waits as if it's done, leaving the unfinished download on the desktop.
I don't want to use the Happy Cloud stuff, so I'm just trying to download the client.
I've downloaded many large games and programs over the last few days, including Lotro, so it's not a problem with my internet connection.
I put in a support ticket to Turbine but since that may take days, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.
Thanks!

Try downloading it through Steam? I have done that not that long ago just to test if it was any different than direct (it wasn't). The only drawback to that method is having to have Steam running when you play, which I often do anyways just to chat :D

If it turns out that's the only way I can get it to download, I may give it a shot, but I really have no interest in using Steam.

Over the past week when I try to download the MAC BETA client, I get
File not found."
When I click on the link. Some days it starts downloading and always stops around 4Gb. Now it seems to consistently give this error. Tried from several MAC's and PC's???
Any suggestions?

Looking into it.
While you're looking into it, could you maybe think bout
BRINGING IT OUT OF BETA?!
It's still a buggy mess but it's the only option for us Mac people who can't be bothered to dual boot just for DDO.

Looking into it.
It has been doing this for several months by the way. Just in case anyone asks.

Consider yourself lucky, vs linux users, who have no option but to reboot.
Well, okay, they sort of do, but it involves running windows, either open source (wine) or closed source (via genuine windows + virtualization and some graphics-card-passthrough-magic)

I heard back from Turbine, but it was just the standard "check your firewall/turn off anti-virus/make sure the security prefs were set to accept any downloads," all of which, unfortunately, were set correctly already. I should have thought to include that in my initial ticket to them to avoid the initial canned response, but it didn't occur to me.
I did call 3 different friends in three different parts of the country, all with different kinds of Mac system set ups, and none of them could get the download links to work either, so at least I feel a little more confident that it's not something weird with my system or network!
When I get more info from Turbine I'll let everyone know, so hopefully those of us who can't download can get back into the game soon!

Had the same issue as everyone else. In the end I got it through steam.
As for the client, the texture bugs you get every now and again are annoying but for me its better than booting into windows just to play.

Received another reply from Turbine today, but all they did was give me a link to Steam, and another link to the download that doesn't work. I replied asking for more assistance, but this email had an air of finality about it, so I don't suspect I'll be hearing from them again. I wish if they wanted to make everyone use Steam, they would just say so, so I can stop asking pestering them about fixing their download link.
I've continued to contact friends around the country, asking them to try to download the game, and none of them can, even though some of them have in the past on the same systems.
If anyone has any ideas besides Steam, I'd love to hear them, because I'm still interested in playing this game again.
UPDATE: Just received another email from Turbine saying they are still looking into this. They then gave me the link to the Happy Cloud download. I still would much rather just have a direct download instead of Happy Cloud or Steam, but I may try Happy Cloud and then see if I can uninstall the Happy Cloud part.

Was the mac client abandoned? I understand it was in beta, and it used to work only on osx 10.7 and 10.8 and it doesn't work on 10.9 yet (at least last time I checked).
But to my surprise, when I came back here to check is there was any news about a new version that works on 10.9, not only I didn't found this version, but I found out that the download link doesn't work at al.
If that's the case, and not further effort will be put on the mac client, I think that an official statement from turbine should be made about it, and this topic should be closed with this information.

I just wanted to update this thread with the latest links for the Mac client. As of today, we now have three options to download the Mac client:
To begin with, you can find our main client download page here. (https://www.ddo.com/en/game/download)
1. Play as you install: There is a Happy Cloud-enabled version of the Mac client here (http://thehappycloud.com/ddo_mac_en_installer). This version allows you to begin playing DDO quickly, while the rest of the client downloads in the background.
2. Install, then play: This is a full download version of the game for Mac. It can be found here (http://content.turbine.com/sites/clientdl/ddo/ddolive.dmg). This version does not currently utilize Akamai, but we expect to replace this version with an Akamai version in the future.
3. Steam: Launch your steam client and you can find a Mac version of the game on Steam here (http://store.steampowered.com/app/206480/).

Is anyone getting this full version download to work? I've tried it a few times and it only gets to about 25% of the ~8 GB file size and stops. Of course, the file is unrecognizable to my OS when I try to open it. Any tips?
The happycloud version as been successful at installing the game a couple times, but the game crashes within a few minutes after I get fully loaded and start running around. I'm assuming the problem is with the download version, but would be happy if someone could help me find a solution. Computer is MacBookPro 13" with Mavericks OS.
