DDO is coming to the Mac! While the client is not going to be ready for Update 16 Patch 1, we wanted to make an alpha version available to DDO players to try here on Lamannia this month so we have plenty of time to react to feedback and potential bug reports.

To get started with the DDO Mac client, download the installer at this link: http://download.ddo.akamai.turbine.com/largecontent/ddo/lamannia/DNDLauncher.dmg

Instructions to Install:


COPY the installer URL. (We recommend that players not attempt to hand-type the above URL)
Download the file (this is a full client download for this initial preview, and may take longer than your typical DDO game client downloads on PC do)
Upon download, open the .dmg file
Drag the DNDLauncher .app to a place you see fit (Applications folder is the standard place)
Run the launcher, patch up, and begin to play DDO on your Mac!

Is this a Cider port?
The maximum directX level appears to be DX9, unless those options are disabled because this is an openGL renderer.
The main menu appears to work. Can't say anything beyond this yet as I've yet to log in a character.

Just tried it on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8:
Symbol not found: _kCFWebServicesProviderDefaultDisplayNameKey
So a quick google for this shows it needs at least Mac OS 10.7 or higher to run.

In Xcode click on the project at the very top of the list. Make sure you are in the standard editor view. Click the Project target, move to the info tab and change the deployment target to Mac OS 10.7 or higher so that Mac OS will indicate that a more recent OS is required instead of just crashing.

Or even better, work around the need for that symbol, and support Mac OS 10.6. :-)

I am off to test it on a Retina MacBook Pro running 10.8.

Mac OS 10.8: the app won't launch and I see this in the console:
Someone attempted to start application App:"DNDLauncher" [ 0x0/0x3f03f] @ 0x0x7ffcd1e261c0 but it still has _kLSApplicationLockedInStoppedStateKey=true, so it is is staying stopped.
I suspect this has to do with the Gatekeeper functionality enabled in 10.8. I can't remember off the top of my head how to disable the download bit, which might help, so I am going to jump on 10.7 and see how that works.

-ah yes the Finder is telling me that the app is from an unknown source -that is Gatekeeper kicking in. You need to digitally sign the installer after you finish building it if you want it to install and run without hassle on Mac OS 10.8. It's a bit tricky to set up since it involves getting a certificate from Apple through your developer account, but once it's set up its a breeze to re-sign after that.

Mac OS 10.7: thank you thank you thank you. Its amazing. I am in Kundarak running around on my year old favored soul. The machine is a couple years newer than my current game machine so its blowing the 'Windows' box out of the water. It looks fantastic. I even watched the intro movie all the way through. I have seen a few things wrong so far: the password dialog has an odd white border on the bottom left. The password dialog is using Carbon calls for text rendering -that doesn't look so hot on a retina display. After the underdark elves splash screen, I got a white grid instead of the loading picture. Also the display resolution seems to be fixed, I can't change it, but it looks really nice on my screen anyway in whatever default resolution you chose.

The chat channels won't accept keyboard input.
Voice doesn't seem to work.
The damage numbers floating off mobs being hit are crisp and bright, but totally wrong :-) My blade barrier definitely used to hit for more than 3.
I got the Eveningstar festival effect put on me and when I talked to Elminster in Eveningstar, the ground directly in from of him was unstable and the tree behind had a fairly unusual ghosting effect -the ghost image was way too far in front of the tree.

The Mac 10.8 situation is a bit more complicated. I disabled security in the System Preferences security panel and the DNDLauncher icon just bounced in the dock. So I used the Terminal to launch it manually from the Contents/MacOS/DNDLauncher file and it worked. But I think what happened really is that the "Are you sure you want to run this app?" dialog appeared behind some other Finder window and I just didn't see it. I ended up with two copies running cause of the odd way I tackled it. While I was in there, I see you did actually try to sign the app. I am not sure why it appears to be insecure, other than possibly because I copied the application over a network. But from my own experience I have never found that to be a problem.

Last edit -I relaunched the client and now the chat channels are working. No voice yet, but a big improvement. It's entirely possible I need to be in a party to use voice, but Lam is a bit lonely at the moment.

downloaded the .dmg, mounted and copied the app to applications. Wasn't able to open from the gui, so I tried terminal. Got a little further, and got the unsigned app message. Changed my security settings to allow unsigned, and loaded up again, and still didn't get anywhere. Restarted my computer, and was finally able to get in. Very exciting, though difficult to go from a 1920x1200 to a 1280x800...That's my issue, though, heh.

It is probably a wine wrapper.... A complete native client would be much more expensive to do.

I'd like to see a native linux binary too... they could also give us the source and we could try to compile and make it work ourselves... but, ofc, it will not happen.

Linux users are used to fend for themselves. The stereotypical linux user don't need someone to make DDO work in wine (in 2 years the first time I had to compile a wine just for ddo was in the last update).

Stereotypical Saint Jobs followers like user friendlyness and don't care how things works... probably don't even know what "compile" means.

For them a wine wrapper is a huge benefit. Hopefully will bring more people to the game.

IMHO, Turbine's technical staff should concentrate their efforts in bug squashing and new stuff, not babysitting Linux users.

I'd like to save the "oh please help us linux users please" for the time that we really can't make it work and the solution is dependent on some coding from turbine.

Macbook Pro os x 10.7 late 2008 (intel core 2 duo) with "detect optimal settings" for graphics. Using the build in keyboard and a Naga Razer mosue. Text entry is broken/unreliable (see below) so I'm reporting here. Turbine/Tolero, should we move to a different thread?

1) Download and install process was painfully slow (and i'm on fiber optics) but worked well enough.

2) Text entry doesn't seem to work in any of the chat boxes.

3) On the first toon I copied over, I was able to create a new guild (type in the guild name on social panel) and restore access to her items with guild augment slots even though I can't actually slot anything in them due to guild level.

4) Run around the gnoll section of sands with her showed no obvious problems.

5) Fired up the bug reporter tool but could not enter text into it. Just like the various chats, it just wouldn't take any text, but the keyboard was clearly working for other functions.

6) Logged onto a second toon (log out and log on, did not quit client) and tried to create a guild for her so she could use her slots. No joy. Could not enter any text, but keyboard was working otherwise.

7) She zoned into House C and I noticed flickering of some of the detailing on walls, but that could be a graphics setting issue.

8) Camera zoom in and out changes differently than on windows, and the mouse wheel doesn't seem to zoom correctly. Can't describe better than that.

So, in a half hour no major issues. Bravo!

I plan to run some lowbies around to exercise the client, but initial experience is positive.

Turbine takes away French and German support with one hand and adds Apple support with the other. Makes it very hard to read the tea leaves about the future state of the game. I would have thought Apple support would be by far the more difficult of the two, so it would be a bigger investment, therefore more confidence in the game's future rather than less?

Or is it just less confidence in the odd two-headed beast that is Windows 8?

I inspected the package contents and the framework libraries are all "qt" something. IIRC, that's some of what WINE uses. I'm not sure how viable that is long term with Windows 8 in the future, but building cross platfrom on such a framework in the future can remove some of the platform dependency and lock in.

On your flame bait--I read a story (I think in network world, but I don't recall exactly) about market share vs usage tendencies. Point was that android has taken over unit sales and penetration, but if you look at web usage from mobile devices, iOS wins going away. Technical merits aside (they don't equal market success, just ask OS/2 users) devices don't matter. People and what they do matters.

An android tablet doesn't spend money, nor does an iPad. But, there are clear tendencies among buyers of various devices and technologies. Linux users are stereotypically cheapskates, and if I was allocating resources to a development push, they'd be low on my priority list unless had I had data that showed me they would bring me money.

Back to DDO and Turbine, if they are building on top of a good cross platform framework and can bring a solution to Linux as they go after what is almost certainly a more lucrative Mac market, that'd be cool. As a DDO player, I want lots of people in game and supporting future development by buying TP.

I don't know if that's entirely true, but I can see where the perception would come from. The fact is though, if you buy a pc it already comes with a Windows license, and if you build a pc from scratch it will most likely be more expensive than any pre-built pc, often significantly more. Then if you are just talking about the addon software itself, tools that I can think of that are available to Linux users for free are also available to Windows users for free anyway (OpenOffice, etc.).

If there was any threat to a piece of new software from Linux users I'd think it would be more loyalty or stubbornness or just being set in their ways. Most Linux users I know are very particular about their computing environment and very very (emotionally?) commited to the software they already use and have since the first day they did blah blah blah with RedHat back in the days when you had to compile blah blah blah from scratch and walk home both ways in the snow, etc etc, whether the old or new software is free or not.

Maybe, being used to good quality software, linux users are less inclined to pay for "buy now, we'll patch-it-later", DRM-laden, sub-par software.

It is true DDO has worked nicely with wine up until the last patch, and I haven't tested, but I believe the latest wine version that came out a couple of weeks after the update includes the necessary patch.

Also, if it is anything like the LOTRO client, there are still going to be a number of problems with the graphical settings -- e.g., you won't be able to change everything. I know on my machine, I get all kinds of graphical glitches (e.g., purple waterfalls) in LOTRO on the Mac.

I was able to fix a few graphical glitches by changing some graphics settings on the game (was on my macbook, not my MacPro, so GFX card isn't as power). I was getting fun dancing tree when I would cast lightning bolt, until I changed post processing effects to "off"

It will run on 10.8, but you have to allow apps from anywhere in the System Preferences / Security panel. When you run the DNDLauncher look for a dialog asking "are sure you want to run this app?". It may appear behind other windows so close all the Finder windows if you don't see it.

At least one other person said they had to restart the Mac to get it to work, but I think if you find the dialog, you should be ok.

Once you have it working, reenable your security settings.

Edit: it requires 10.7 or higher at the moment. It isn't going to work on anything less than that.

MAC OS X is the child of BSD and NextSTEP...
As such it has nothing to do with Linux ( beyond the fact that they are both Unix like ).
Depending on how it the MAC porting has been done, getting a Linux version can range from a piece of cake to coding nightmare .

Personally if they really want to produce clients I'd love a Solaris 10, Ultra Sparc ( sun4u ) version.
But I'm a bit biased.

My best friend in a diehard Mac user. Even though we played D&D in college, porting the game into Windows was too much hassle for him. If nothing else, he will download this into MAC as an alternative to telephone calls.

Linux makes up less than 1.5% of total Desktop/Laptop computer OSes by many metrics. OSX is gaining ground and has something like 8%. I guess it was just worth it for Turbine to make an OSX port?

I doubt they'll do it for Linux. Too niche, and Linux users already never expect things to just be handed to them...

I'm not sure how viable that is long term with Windows 8 in the future.

I don't think they're worried about W8. It's an awful OS unless you have a touchscreen, and even if you lose the Metro UI you gain basically nothing over W7. W8 is having underwhelming sales, and people are even getting rid of W8 on new computers. But there's no reason for Turbine to change their policies or anything just because Microsoft is goofing; vast majority of computers still use W7 and XP. Only 0.5% of computers run W8, and DDO runs on W8 as it is anyway (with stability issues which can be resolved in time). It's really just "Hey let's make DDO work on another OS to get more players."

Still wondering about the French and German thing though. Were there simply not a lot of players?

It has been stated, in the French Thread IIRC, that less than 4% of the French players used the French Client and that keeping the French localization for them was costing an arm and a leg.

In the end of the day Turbine is in for the money, it's not economically viable to maintain a packaging for less than 4% of a market, when the 96% use the same item but packaged differently.

It's probably the same problem for the Germans.

Honestly, they would have had more people using localized clients if they released said client ( with correct translations ) when they took over from Codemasters... ( where we had localized clients from the begining )
But the 8/9 month gap between the end of the European Servers and the creation of the localized clients killed them :
- those that couldn't cope with English only left for greener pastures
- those that could cope with English moved to the English client and kept it because it makes things way more simple. ( no mindbreaking guess at translations of quest names and such )

Those of you asking for a Linux client - plenty of people already play DDO from Linux and OSX using wine.

I have used pyLotro and Codeweavers.com Crossover (a commercial version of Wine for OSX and Linux) for years for Microsoft Office and DDO. It is so seamless now that the Crossover installer handles installing pylotro for you.

Caveat to the above is that since the last DDO & LOTRO updates it has been broken - it will be working again when Crossover 12 comes out.

I downloaded it last night and did a quick launch this morning to make sure it was working and it played the movie and got to the screen in which to create characters. I didn't have time to do any more at the time, so I logged out. But when I went back to launch it again to make a character, it told me that I didn't have a ddo account, and now all I get is an error dialog, "Internal Error, please contact customer support." Anyone else running it successfully? I am on an iMac running 10.8.2.

The show-stopper comes after entering login info. It shows the internal splash screen, then (on a gridded background, where we'd now see the "Festivult" ad) it momentarily tries to load game data before the dndclient crashes.

The app was authorized to run in Security. It seems to me that there's a write problem. Any thoughts?

Yes. The last update broke the client. Mine was working, but now, under 10.7.5, it crashes as the grid comes up after the under dark elves splash screen.

As a Linux user I'd like to say I'm not a cheapskate, I bought Win7 just to play DDO with less hassle than fiddling with Wine after each update.


THIS.
I bought 2 copies of Win7 (for me and my wife) so that we could continue to play DDO.
I'd rather there were a native linux client so that we'd never have to worry about OS's.

Heck- some FtP game needs to "risk it" and just get plain "bundled up" with Ubuntu.

Just tried it on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8:
Symbol not found: _kCFWebServicesProviderDefaultDisplayNameKey
So a quick google for this shows it needs at least Mac OS 10.7 or higher to run.

In Xcode click on the project at the very top of the list. Make sure you are in the standard editor view. Click the Project target, move to the info tab and change the deployment target to Mac OS 10.7 or higher so that Mac OS will indicate that a more recent OS is required instead of just crashing.

Or even better, work around the need for that symbol, and support Mac OS 10.6. :-)

I am off to test it on a Retina MacBook Pro running 10.8.

Mac OS 10.8: the app won't launch and I see this in the console:
Someone attempted to start application App:"DNDLauncher" [ 0x0/0x3f03f] @ 0x0x7ffcd1e261c0 but it still has _kLSApplicationLockedInStoppedStateKey=true, so it is is staying stopped.
I suspect this has to do with the Gatekeeper functionality enabled in 10.8. I can't remember off the top of my head how to disable the download bit, which might help, so I am going to jump on 10.7 and see how that works.

Edit:
-ah yes the Finder is telling me that the app is from an unknown source -that is Gatekeeper kicking in. You need to digitally sign the installer after you finish building it if you want it to install and run without hassle on Mac OS 10.8. It's a bit tricky to set up since it involves getting a certificate from Apple through your developer account, but once it's set up its a breeze to re-sign after that.

Mac OS 10.7: thank you thank you thank you. Its amazing. I am in Kundarak running around on my year old favored soul. The machine is a couple years newer than my current game machine so its blowing the 'Windows' box out of the water. It looks fantastic. I even watched the intro movie all the way through. I have seen a few things wrong so far: the password dialog has an odd white border on the bottom left. The password dialog is using Carbon calls for text rendering -that doesn't look so hot on a retina display. After the underdark elves splash screen, I got a white grid instead of the loading picture. Also the display resolution seems to be fixed, I can't change it, but it looks really nice on my screen anyway in whatever default resolution you chose.

The damage numbers floating off mobs being hit are crisp and bright, but totally wrong :-) My blade barrier definitely used to hit for more than 3.
I got the Eveningstar festival effect put on me and when I talked to Elminster in Eveningstar, the ground directly in from of him was unstable and the tree behind had a fairly unusual ghosting effect -the ghost image was way too far in front of the tree.

The Mac 10.8 situation is a bit more complicated. I disabled security in the System Preferences security panel and the DNDLauncher icon just bounced in the dock. So I used the Terminal to launch it manually from the Contents/MacOS/DNDLauncher file and it worked. But I think what happened really is that the "Are you sure you want to run this app?" dialog appeared behind some other Finder window and I just didn't see it. I ended up with two copies running cause of the odd way I tackled it. While I was in there, I see you did actually try to sign the app. I am not sure why it appears to be insecure, other than possibly because I copied the application over a network. But from my own experience I have never found that to be a problem.

Last edit -I relaunched the client and now the chat channels are working. No voice yet, but a big improvement. It's entirely possible I need to be in a party to use voice, but Lam is a bit lonely at the moment.

Essentially all you need to do is go under system preferences and tell your security settings to accept apps from anywhere. This is the same thing that happened with the LOTRO mac client. It's only this way because otherwise Turbine would have to have everything Apple signed and it'd have to be available via the App store.

It's not a problem with Turbine or DDO/LOTRO, it's just a simple setting which once it is run will no longer bother the app. After you run it once on anywhere mode, you can change the setting back if you want. It will pop up a dialogue box asking if you want to run this app 'are you sure - it's from the internet'. Click open and it runs nicely.

I would love a linux make of it, im not super techie so am not willing to try wine or anything like that, and BTW i drop LOTS of money on this game a PC parts, just hate the windows ****. ONLY use it cause i play games.

I agree completely... I am chomping at the bit to get this goin'... same thing happens to me on 10.8.2... I think it's somehow just software related. I'm sure once they get it figured out it'll be smooth sailing, however.

The LOTRO mac client runs like a dream for me, so if this does the same someday... I'll be mega happy with Turbine.

As for now though it seems like we're in a lurch for this one >.<

We discovered an issue with the alpha client not wanting to patch up between releases. So when Lamannia got updated again, the client went haywire. The engineers are working on a fix for the next client build (the next one should let you try it on the live servers and not just Lamannia =D)

These are two separate companies....

Valve ported the Steam client to Linux (it had ported it to the Mac quite some time before).
That port has nothing to do with making any of the games available on Steam work on either the Mac or Linux... porting the actual games is the responsibility of the individual game vendor -- Turbine in this case.

One of the problems with porting to Linux is the simple question -- Which Linux? The Valve Port of the Steam Client is defined for Ubuntu only. You get to define what "defined" means... it clearly doesn't mean supported.: )

Linux is no more "common" or "standard" than it's parent, Unix(tm), was before hand. And, for that matter, one would assume that software which runs under BSD Unix(tm) (i.e. OSX) should also run under Linux. Aha, you say, but it does... what doesn't work is the GUI -- which window system are you using? OSX has its own as does each version of Linux -- virtually nobody uses X-11 any more.

Sadly, that means that Linux users are still restricted to using WINE ... which runs both DDO and LOTRO without problems (until the last release of Ubuntu broke both).

DDO is coming to the Mac! While the client is not going to be ready for Update 16 Patch 1, we wanted to make an alpha version available to DDO players to try here on Lamannia this month so we have plenty of time to react to feedback and potential bug reports.

To get started with the DDO Mac client, download the installer at this link: http://download.ddo.akamai.turbine.com/largecontent/ddo/lamannia/DNDLauncher.dmg

Instructions to Install:


COPY the installer URL. (We recommend that players not attempt to hand-type the above URL)
Download the file (this is a full client download for this initial preview, and may take longer than your typical DDO game client downloads on PC do)
Upon download, open the .dmg file
Drag the DNDLauncher .app to a place you see fit (Applications folder is the standard place)
Run the launcher, patch up, and begin to play DDO on your Mac!
Let us know how DDO runs on your Mac

You should not be using the alpha version unless you are trying to get on to Lammania.

This is the version to use to get on to the live servers:

You might need to control-click on it the first time and select "Open" to bypass Gatekeeper's checksum requirements -the app is not signed correctly.

If you are actually trying to get on to Lammania, this is quite a bit trickier. You will need to control-click the alpha client, select "Show Package Contents", navigate to Contents/MacOS and drag the file "DNDLauncher" into an open Terminal window. Terminal can be found in /Applications/Utilities. Alternatively you can manually type something like: "/Applications/DNDLauncher Lammania.app/Contents/MacOS/DNDLauncher" into the Terminal window, assuming you renamed the client to "DNDLauncher Lammania". Once you have the path in the Terminal window, hit the return key and it will launch. It will patch a *huge* number of files, and will crash several times doing so. Just keep relaunching it from the Terminal every time. Eventually you will be able to play on Lammania from your Mac.

I was running Mac client for Lamania for last couple of patches with no issues. Since the update 18 went in on live servers my Mac client is unable to patch itself or start. I get message "Internal Error, please contact customer support."
Anyone else experiencing this?

Oh, mac client on live servers is working fine for me... just lammania mac that appears to be broken.
