As if "Electric Ladyland" wasn't "experimental" enough......

My taste goes a bit more towards the British guitar legends of that period- Clapton, Beck, Page and the like- but absolutely no one sounded anything like Hendrix. Then OR now.

I always thought that the rest of The Experience were at least a bit under-rated. I mean, they had to keep up with the guy and they did a pretty good job of it, didn't they?

Also learned while doing the research (aka- Google) about the new album is that a Hendrix biopic is in the works, with OutKast's Andre 3000 starring as Hendrix. Most of the info was from pretty early on this year and there seems to be problems. The Hendrix estate isn't on board, at least not fully, and no-cooperation of that sort can but a kink into production. I tell you, though, that Andre 3000, in makeup, looks VERY much like Hendrix, eerily so. I know he's a talented musician (not really my bag in terms of music but I have a teenager, ergo I know his music), so I'm not thinking that they'll have to use much in the way of visual or auditory trickery to make that work.

I can see the connection with Sonic Youth (not as familiar with Wilco).

Jimi could certainly go off on an Acoustical Tangent, but you could also count on him to bring it back eventually. I never thought he was just creating noise for the sake of creating noise, if you follow. Sonic Youth, though, seemed to be the musical equivalent of anarchy, or at least that's what I take away from what I've heard of them). I'm not exactly a stranger to various forms of jams- jazz, blues, etc.- but SY stuff I found just grating. But to each, his own, right?
