I envision a form of crafting in which any armor, robe or outfit (i.e. any chest item worn by non-warforged) can be put into the Stone of Change (or other crafting device) and made into a docent item, with all of it's other attributes intact.

This would be awesome, if it were possible to implement. The only question for me is how much it would cost...

my guess would be around 500tp + armor kit cost.

Not sure if this is the best way to address the shortage of decent docents, but it would be an improvement over what we have now.

I agree that warforged need some serious docent love, but simply making all armor into docents solves one problem and creates another. Armor type restrictions would be completely abolished for warforged. Fighters wearing Frozen Tunic with addy body. Casters wearing heavy armor in docent form. I'm not saying I'm totally against it, but you do lose a sense of balance that you do have with the armors in standard form. I say convert a select few to start and see how it goes. Allowing conversion of all could cause issues.

while this may help wf a bit, but really, what the wf needs is actual considerations from the devs when planning out loots.
wf needs some unique abilities that are exclusive to wf and/or defenders
not just copy-paste of what fleshies have

...and what it would look like.

Any armor set crunched down and chewed on, should come with the automatic cosmetic effect of having a wad of tinfoil glued to the WF's chest. :D

For a small upcharge, it comes with the mangled arms poking out because they didn't remove the armor's occupant before said crunching/chewing. :p

But the only thing you get from docents, besides the magical effects, is the enhancement bonus.

iirc, things like PRR, ASF % chance and maximum dexterity bonus come from the WF body feats.

So treat the body types as proficiency requirements. You need this body type to use this armor as a docent.

You know, I'm not worried at all about a warforged fighter with the icy tunic abilities on his docent.

Warforged already have the Beholder Plate Docent, and the Fleshshaper's Docent, and those haven't broken the game. They have the dragonscale docents and the dragontouched docents, and that hasn't broken the game either.

It'd be nice if a Warforged Monk could actually have the Garments of Equilibrium to some extent. Or a wizard having the War Wizard's Robes. Or a Fighter having Firebreak. There's a hefty list of really nice higher level armors that warforged can't use, and if they aren't going to get more things like the Quoriforged Docent of Battle to make up for the gap? Let them have carbon-copies of the powers off other armors.

Could even keep it themely...you need a docent of equivalent level range, you put them both into the stone, and what you get back is your new docent, and a suit of Masterwork armor, completely stripped of all magic. A total transferal.

Yeah, something like that could work. I guess my concern isn't so much that it's unbalancing, but that if my fleshy monk can't wear an epic Marilith Chain, I don't see why that restriction should be removed on a WF monk for every single armor already in the game. Warforged need more options, they just don't need ALL the options.

And maybe an Blank Armor with an Docent slot for normal chars.

No. It's always better to fix the actual problem (in this case lack of named docents) than create complex workarounds in the form of new systems, that will most certainly have unforseen issues in terms of gameplay and technical problems, aka bugs.

Workarounds are the path to hell, there is nothing as permanent as a temporary workaround.

People, what DDO needs is *not* new mechanics. It's already so complex the devs themselves cannot keep up, which is obvious from the way bugs appear in the strangest places. It's also difficult to keep up with the gameplay changes as a player, the rules and goalposts are changing too fast. I am NOT advocating dumbing down, just saying stabilize the game. I'm already dreading the enhancement pass.

<hyperbole>Lastly, as a personal opinion, there seems to be a drive for everyone to be the same and everyone having everything. If all players had their way, everyone would be an evasive warforged-human fighter-divine-instakill-nuker dual wielding esos and wearing docents and plate.</hyperbole>
