Hey folks,
I got in an argument with some mindflayers the other day and seeing I don't know their customs my weapon might have offended them in a way that they wanted to suck my brain out. But a funny thing happened. I was stunned and the mindflayer started to snack on my meager brain and suddenly he just turned around and tried to suck the wall out. So I couldn't do anything active since I was stunned but was wearing an upgraded Ring of Lies with imp. deception. It happened more than once, so I don't think it is a coincidence.
I'll try to recreate that but I guess it won't be easy.
So if anybody experienced a similiar passiv deception effect I would be glad, if you post it here.
Thank you in advance.

Most monsters, when in a rooted position (such as archers that aren't moving, or monsters performing animations that can't be done on the run), will have trouble moving back around to face their most hated targets. A medusa performing a stone-gaze is one of my favorite examples, as they can't move during the animation once they stop and lower their head, nor can they turn around to hit you with the gaze attack once they've been hit with the spin.
The monk Unbalancing Strike can also net the same results, as it is also capable of spinning a monster.

I was stunned, didn't move, so not changing my position. He was sucking on my brain. no reason to turn around all of a sudden.

Maybe he tasted something he didn't like ;)
I don't think it was the ring, It was most likely incredible luck, or the DM just felt killing you wasn't good for the gaming session so gave you an out.

did you have any guards possibly?

haste guard and marbar cloak (phantasmal killer)
guess he got sick of my brain and puked on the wall.

if you're a toaster, then the mind flayers will in fact throw up after eating your brains. however, so far as i am aware you still die. i had thought deathblock prevented both the attempt and the animation, but perhaps it merely prevents you from getting killed by the extraction attack, but still has them do the full animation?

no, I got killed just now by a mindflayer in "Into the Flesh" endfight. deathblock didn't prevent the brainsucking...

hmmm... maybe the mabar cloak's invisibility actually worked for once?

You think the flayer will interrupt his action in the middle of the attack?
Hmm, I will try it out without the cloak.

Alright, I tested it with no cloak, no guards, no buffs, no deathblock. just the ring, got aggro and just w8ted for him to start sucking. And he did turn in the middle of the attack and I was spared a brain sucking in 4 from 10 attempts.
Maybe its imp deception or especially the upgraded Rng of Lies but it saved my shiny little ass.
Later on the end boss in In the Flesh turned too btw. Didn't escape his attacks though ;).

You a barb?
The Mindflayer detected a brain somewhere in the vicinity, tried your skull and found the wall had more?
:) j/k
