So instead of all this Forgotten Realms nonsense (I mean, really? FR? woo generic fantasy?), let's go for something a little more exotic.

Athas. World of the Dark Sun.

You could introduce psionics (which you should have done years ago), at the same time as providing a whole new world in which to adventure. One that isn't dull, done-to-death drow and generic fantasy.

Thri-kreen, halflings who view other sapients as meals, gladiators, defilers, come on, let's do it!

You know you want to stat up some Sorcerer-Kings as epic level foes!

In the world of Eberron there are tribal Halflings that ride Velociraptors. Why oh why should we leave Eberron?

Edit- but I'll agree that World of the Dark Sun is a lot better than FR.

Exactly. And psionic races, and all sorts of other fun stuff that we haven't even touched on. I think its sad Turbine abandoned Eberron for FR.

I think its sad Turbine abandoned Eberron for FR.Same here.

In pen and paper, I always found Forgotten Realms to be the most boring and generic of all TSR's settings. That continued into the WotC days.

Small wonder that now DDO has powered into Elminsterville my urge to play DDO is at it's lowest ebb in a long, long time. Yeah, the art team has made it look fantastic... but it's just missing something(s) that make me want to play.

That being said, I think that Athas would not be a great choice either. Love playing that one in pen and paper - but I think it'd be better as a standalone game, given the time and care the setting needs. Also, how would the setting's Preservers and Defilers approach to magic-users be represented?

I'd only vote for Dark Sun if we were guarandamnteed Thri-Kreen as a playable race. But, we have a hint at them in DDO already, however - and Half-Orcs look like half-Giants anyway. And the armor kit crew seems to have the Athas dress code down pat, provided your alt happens to be female.

I think the best and most promising way to expand would be Planescape, and have for a while.

Oh, don't misunderstand, I'd rather we were expanding Eberron too (even if it isn't my favorite setting). But since we're clearly expanding into other worlds, there are much more interesting choices than FR. And really, velociraptor mounts? How do we get that in the game? Sign me up RIGHT NOW!

I could handle some expanding to Sigil as well, some nice planar faction action.

What's a Sorcerer-King? Some kind of lich?

Psionicist/Defiler Wizards - Lvl 20+ in both!

Able to give out Divine Magic to their Templars {clerics} as Gods!

Each Level after 20 {epic levels} the Sorceror King undergoes metamorphosis - Eventually becoming a Dragon {Very different to the standard Dragons of other Settings But you get the idea.

Each King/Queen rules one of the City states of Athas {a dying world where Magic was overused}.
Kalak of Tyr, Hammanu of Urik and at least two other Sorceror Kings were killed during the events of the Troy Denning Novels {The Prism Pentad} which are in my view the best novels every written for Dungeons & Dragons.
The Storyline of Athas which Player Characters are involved in follows on from the events of that story.

I'm going from AD&D 2nd Ed. of course - 3.5 and 4th Ed. may have changed some of this.

I never enjoyed the Dark Sun campaign world to be honest, but I'll throw in support for you if you'll do the same and help me pitch a Ravenloft one. :)

Hell, anything other than the Generic Realms!

You know what could solve this? Developer tools available to the players to design Player-made content. :D
