Hey, so just for fun I ask you all how did you choose your toons name? I've seen around here some names that are really funny, some names related to famous people or characters from books and movies.

For example, I got a toon named Kizz Thunder and it's because when I was building it I was listening to Kiss' song God of Thunder, lol, but Kiss was already taken so I changed it to Kizz.

Why your toon is named like that? :D

Guilty as charged. I have 5 toons I've named after famous characters from fantasy novels I've enjoyed (see if you can pick 'em out. (http://my.ddo.com/aegontargaryen/characters/) +1 rep to the first one to post.) Several others I just thought of something slightly humorous and appropriate for the build. Only one is completely made up.

My Warforged Characters all go by Football {Soccer} Stadiums:

Molineux - Spellsinger Bard
Tannadice - Cleric/Fighter/Ranger {7/1/1 atm}
Tynecastle - Two Handed Stalwart

Larystessian Caravardian {Elf Wiz/Rogue - My First DDO Character} - The name is one I used in PnP - I followed Elven type naming Conventions - Particularly influenced by Katherine Kerr's Deverry Series.

Jelina Athenis {Human Battle Cleric} - Again back in PnP I played Clerics of Athina {Athenis} - Helena was taken so she became Jelina.

EnochPagett {first Life FS 16/Fighter 4 - Started as a Fighter} was named after my Grandad on my Mother's side - 2nd Life he's a DoS Paladin.

Sylveria Levalle - My 4th Character in DDO - Again a name that comes from PnP - No Source though that I know of.

I have plenty of other characters BUT only:

Curleag Greenleaf - 2nd Life Druid - 1st Life was Ranger/Cleric/Barb
& Keltenn - 2nd Life HotD - 1st Life HotD
Came from Characters in Books Gord the Rogue by Gary Gygax & The Elenium by David Eddings to be exact.

Oh and of course - Lieuk Skywalker - My Shintao! and Anaqin Skywalker - My Ninja

Close, but no cigar. You got 1 of the five I named after characters from fantasy novels I'm a fan of. The others, are more or less right. There are 2 cars in there, actually (though only one is overrated. The other is highly underrated...). Not sure where you got greyhawke from though. +1 for the effort though. :D

Most of mine I just look around, find a couple of things, then take the two names and play around with them until I find something I like. My warforge started with XR-71(type of airplane) and have went up by 1 for each next one. My cleric, Rianoc was watching a movie.(read it backwards) My bard/rogue, Incogneato, was a play on being incognito. And my palemaster, Nomuertos Killer, is a loose spanish translation of undead killer.

There's TWO Robilar's {sp} in Dungeons & Dragons!

One is in the Drizz't Novels - A Ship's Wizard.

The Other is a famous name from Greyhawk with a spell named after him if I remember right.

Wanver and Ralven I just thought it sounded cool.

The other two characters I choose an English word/phrase and used Google to translate to Afrikaans.
Steengroef = Quarry
Geenidee Vir'name = No idea for names

Some I just made up, such as Ghaelii (Kelly) and Treln. Some I picked from Old Norse, such as Arndis (Eagle woman) and Hrafnor (Raven man).

Mine are based around Norse Mythology.

I use the following for characters:

Throwbacks to previous character names I've used in prior games (Achika, Ukenburger)
The word "Cow" as a prefix to a character-matching noun or adjective (Cowtech, Cowglade, Cowsoul)
A three-syllable word that I randomly assemble on the spot, often ending in a vowel (Marchello, Karterra, Nageti)
A family pet's name (Mac, Riley)

I use the following for minor characters or pet-like creatures:

A guild or friend bestowed name (Flappy, Doombringer, Bazooka, Suicidal)
Something that is game-related humor (Goner, Dogdog)
A word that describes the character or creature (Fangs, Skitters)

Garix
11-04-2012, 09:33 AM
All my WF are based on their class and my own idea of their character (baring my main Garix)

Strontianite - Earth Savant
Ampere - Air Savant
Retaliatory Strike - Rogue
Preserver of Starquake - Fighter (Starquake is one of my wife's characters)
Consultant Surgeon - FVS
Fleshhunter - Cleric
Termination Unit Four - Palemaster
Renovator - Artificer
Axesinger - Bard
Fundamental Element - Fire Savant

Most of my other characters names just end in "rix"

My two mains, Romenion and Morgulion, both come from J.R.R. Tolkein's elvish languages.

My real name translated to English means the dawn. Romen is Quenya for morning.

Morgul is Sindarin for sorcery/necromancy. Morgulion is an old AD&D character from back in the day. An elven magic-user that dabbled in necromancy and planar travel. In Eberron, he was a Pale Master in his first life.

-ion is just a masculine suffix.

All my ddo characters are either direct representations or adaptations of my old PnP characters. Some names I hot exactly some I had to tweak a bit but kept them mostly the same.

Well, let's see.

I have Kazual... pronounced Casual, not Kazuul. Stole a friend's DJ name.

Then there's Kazuaru (Japanese-ish pronunciation) and Informeel (Afrikaaner-ish) as variants.

I have Skahtch Ensodah. He's a dwarf, and I've a Scottish background.

And Starque, because Stark was taken. Nothing to do with Game of Thrones, honestly. Seriously, I went by Stark before I read the books. It has to do with a tabletop game my friends and I played when we were teenagers.

Then there's the names that are references (aka stolen from pop culture).

Anyone who can guess where they're from is as nerd as me.

Nexussix
Nekrahn Nintynine
AlteredState
Switters

As far as my forum name goes, well, I was prompted to choose something different than my log-in name, and this is what came to mind.

I tried to name mine after a Mountain bike I had - Klein Mantra

But Mantra was taken so I wanted Mantra X, but spaces wernt allowed so my first became

Mantrax

All subsequent alts now have names ending in trax (with one or more X's)

Well...
The night b4 starting this game some years back, I had just watched the movie TROY.

and yea, needless to say, was again quite smitten with Mr Pitt. :p
...so, when i started thinking about me character, i wanted to name it after him.

Achilles. :)

But ...that would mean i would have 2 play a guy.

Therefore... ~Achillesia was born.

All my characters names ( except two, see below ) are related one way or another to PnP character, either they are straight PnP characters or related to PnP characters.

there's two exceptions, one comes from a PnP universe, ( good luck finding the reference ) and the other comes from footnotes in books edited by the son of a well known author. ( good luck in finding that one too )

Logenn,
I can't believe no one has gotten Tyrione, as well as your forum name - are from Game of Thrones. Man, those books are good. The show's not bad, but really, the books are phenomenal.

Hm, I'm sort of thematic with my toon names.

Melisandae (Sorc)- Not 'the red lady' from game of thrones, although that certainly fits. Actually took this name from the Kushiel's Legacy Series

Amadrigal (Bard)- A 'madrigal' is a name for a form of vocal song that came about during the Renaissance.

Thingg One (Fvs)- A 'flavor' name- she's a halfling with blue hair.

I picked Jocal and Wernac by just randomly picking letters.
Suffafrom lackarespect I picked to be humorous.
Moxxer is based on the Mox cards from MTG.
Slipnard Stonecircle is a character my friend used in PnP D&D.
Rathinen I got by Googling "random fantasy name generators" and using one, can't remember which.

Right on both counts. :D

I'm a huge fan of A song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, in addition to MANY forgotten realms novels/series (R. A. Salvatore, Ed Greenwood, Elaine Cunningham, etc...)

For a total breakdown of the five, here it goes...

Tyrione- Tyrion Lannister from ASoIaF series.
Aegonn- Aegon Targaryen from ASoIaF series.
Robilllard- Robillard, the ship's wizard of the Sea Sprite from several of R. A. Salvatore's FR novels.
Cadderlley- Cadderly Bonaduce, Chosen of Deneir, a cleric from R. A. Salvatore's Cleric Quintet.
Logenn- Logen Ninefingers, also known as The Bloody Nine, a barbarian from Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy. (If you are a fan of G.R.R.M., I *HIGHLY* recommend reading this guys work. Best fantasy series I've read in years.)

As for the others...

Warrforgery- WF AM wizard
Mechanically- WF LoB fvs
Biologically- Human evoker fvs
Greeenpeace- Horc druid
Kemosabi- Human monk
Mechguyver- WF artificer (couldn't help myself. I loved this show when I was younger)

Lamborghinii- WF barb (curently a lvl 4 bank, ironically)
Hachiroku- WF air savant. Also the japanese nickname for the 1986 Toyota Corolla, known by its chassis code AE86. One of the greatest drift cars ever made.

Masticus- Dwarf TWF barb. My first toon, and coincidentally, the only one I named off the top of my head.

I've been accused of using as many consonants as possible:

Hralgar (ranger, tried to make an angosaxonish name)
Savorak (sorc: less anglosaxon, better for a sorc).
Belnrok (fvs: follow the pattern, with a nod to the disciples of Aldur)
Hravok (barb: play on havoc and hralgar)
Drondo (halfling rogue: my first D&D character was a halfling (race&class) named Drodo son of Drondo. Presumably named after granddad)
Frumple (hagglebard: named after a merchant side character in myth adventures).
Aleivore (dwarf monk: a less serious name)
Jeffcrocker (artificer/bard: named after the leader of fictional club in juvi lit. Hopefully not trademarked).

Test characters and mules get even more silly names.

Here's some from my list. Most names come from stuff I have been reading or watching:

Phantasya: derived from the Disney movie.

Muddbutt: shout out to the Chapelle Show, and Ribs as a sleeping aid.

Carbonadium: originally a WF, Carbonadium is a strong metal like Adamantium

Silanides: an alkali metal. He runs around with his trusty robo-dog (ByTor) and a wolf pet companion (SnowDog).

Mayango: a word we made up as kids, synonym for every demeaning adjective.

Blackpitirre: Pitirre is a bird from the town I grew up in.

Freewheel: from the song Freewheel Burning (Priest!)

Inenek: One of the sorcerer kings in the Dark Sun setting.

Alekzander Lifeson: yeah, from Rush

Kalari

Most of my names have followed me threw several other games from pen and paper and muds to :)

here are the names so far: Kalari, Kamari,Kaderi, Tamiya,(The D'athenor sisters) Nyxy,Algaia (The D'pyxy sisters) Severi, Korovai (Russian wedding bread), Suoress (elven for blessed child) Foxiefist CleopatraJones (blackspoitation movies for the win!) Korosoul, Korobot, Kovari, Kavari, Iylesia, Korei, Mendibot, Mechanie Crushbot, Trinaty, Euphro (the Loresong sisters), Shanaenee Shonuff (Martin anyone?)

I think I have more but its hard keeping track of all 20+ names lol

I write a story...
This allows me to get into the mind of the character...
Their name, race, sex, attitude, as the questions...

Who are they? Why do they do the things they do?
Why did they choose their class, or did it choose them? ;)

What made them who they are...?

I pill names from stories I've read, and loved, past characters from pen & paper...
The Elven dictionary, Dwarven dictionary, fantasy name generator...
And made them up on the fly just because the sound cool...

I think creating the character is one of the most fun parts of the game...:D

Therigar
11-05-2012, 08:42 AM
I name characters based on several factors.

1. PC & NPC names from my P&P days -- example: Therigar.
2. Descriptive names -- example: Basso Profundo (bard).
3. Strikes me as funny names -- example: Certified Used Parts (warforged).
4. Homage names -- example: Tangledroots George (DDO adventure area).
5. Because you made me mad names -- example: Doofus the Village Idiot (because forum posters hold this opinion of me in many cases).

Well, the majority of them are some form of turtle things. Points to her sig. Sulcata, loggerhead, and matamata are all species of turtles/tortoise in addition to the obvious. Turtwig kinda fits here... :)

Second theme: I heart dinosaurs.

Third theme: Victerr Creed/Sabretuth fairly obvious to Xmen fans. :)

And the others are just random stragglers. Sierran was a character from my tabletop. Nikkolas Graison was a briefly mentioned character from Anita Blake (dead brother of a character I liked). Drokk was a character of my husbands that I was fond of.

ETA: Proudtrout fearfish came from a really silly moment involving me, cold meds, my husband, and a nature documentary. Nuff said. Proudtetra came from that too.

HeadbustaJones
11-05-2012, 10:08 AM
Gorrick Bluntblade: First DDO toon I rolled up - - human rogue - - and a carryover from PNP days (actually made him look like me :p); has become my crafting and haggle toon
Docktor Feelgood: Any Crue fans in the house? Healbot human cleric
Headbusta: horc barb, name just seemed to fit
Stonewings: WF FvS build, although his wings look just as light and feathery as any other FvS
Swishthump: horc FvS build; the last two sounds you hear - - "swish" of the greatsword, "thump" of your head hitting the floor...

My toons fall into 2 classes: 1. Amusing Names. 2. Mamma TM

Amusing names have been, Southrn Comfort, Tempting, Canteen, Crikit Frogsinger, Gnot Nice, etc. Soutrhn is the only one I currently play of these and she is rarely new player friendly.

Most of my toons are Mamma: Mammadrow, Mammafist, Mammasmelting, Mammabear....it goes on.
Why Mamma? I am a hugger of kids (noobs,) kisser of hurts, and spanker of bad children. I help others: Sometimes they go on and do great things, and sometimes they turn into right pains or the sort who end up on Springer for being ....well you know. Mamma is usually very nice and will help you out, provide game info & resources, and basically try to set you right. But remember that she has a limited ***** tolerance and dosn't hesitate to tell you how it is.

Bacab
11-05-2012, 10:22 AM
"Bacab" is a Mayan God
"Zweihander "(he is a Lord of the Blades FVS) is the German Word for 2 hander or great sword
"Atropine" is a drug used in emergency situations google it...anyway it is always delivered with a needle. Atropine is a heavy pick specced toon (2 Deathnips).
"Hireling" is a word that is German for a Whale's ******.
"Hjealer" is a battle cleric...and he never understands what it means to "Hjeal people".

Talon_Moonshadow
11-05-2012, 10:53 AM
Various.

But I have a lot of Elf chics with the last name "Moonshadow". (Talon gets around. )

I make up most of my names. I don't like to copy others, but of course I take influence from names I like.

"Talon" was a name of a smuggler in one of the Han Solo books. I thought it would make a good D&D name.
Moonshadow is hardly original, but not really from a specific source. I just thought Talon Moonshadow had a nice ring to it.

sadly, trying to make my first DDO character I had no idea what I had to do to get a name the game would let me use... and no idea that once I found one, I was stuck with it.

too lazy to reroll and anxious to get playing Talonkage Moonshadow was born.
I keep thinking about renaming him.

I have the name Ptalon on every server. The Thelanis one I no longer play, so I may someday rename Talonkage.

The Ptalon idea came from Pteradactyl.
I've use "Pt" to get a lot ot "T" names that would otherwise be taken. (Ptiger)

I've added "Khan" to a lot of names. like Talonkhan.

I have a few favorites I recycle or use on other servers.
(don't want to tell my favorite one as I haven't snagged it on every server yet. )
