Last year I ran Mabar, intending to get the cloak of night up to level 20. Got to level 8, then had to do dragon runs to upgrade any further. The lag was so horribly bad that as soon as the quest starts, nobody could move at all, and we just got to watch incredibly slow mobs and the dragon kill us while nobody could do anything at all. Pretty much gave up on Mabar at that point.

This year, I had high hopes that some of these issues would have been addressed. Spent a couple hours to finally get a single ethereal key. Went in to the spectral dragon quest expecting an improvement. Wrong. Exact same thing again, the lag was so absolutely horrible that nobody could move and we all waited, stuck, for over 10 minutes until the dragon killed everyone in one room and smashed tha altar.

Has anyone had success with this? I really want to upgrade this darn cloak but the lag is ridiculous. What's the secret to getting an instance where you won't completely lag out? Is it better to try this really late at night, etc? What works? I'd hate to have to give up on this festival again just two hours into it, but not sure if this lag can be reduced in any way. Also, getting 10,000 motes to trade for the dragon scales doesn't seem like a great idea as I'd need 4 scales, so 40,000 motes, and so far after 2 hours I have a little over 1,000. Don't really want to put 80 hours in over the next week just to get around the lag.

Ummm, 2 for 2 successful runs tonight on Sarlona in the Epic setting. First run was VERY quick, second one more a normal time. No problems or lag really seen either time.

I am experiencing zero lag INSIDE Mabar. The Dragon Fight is so easy you can pike harder than you ever could in Reaver. So in summary, I have no idea what you are talking about here.

I do, however, believe it causes lag outside the event...for some. Although I haven't experienced any myself tonight...yet.

What server are you on?

the lag issues seems to only be caused by several parties entering at the same time, as it seems once more players get in the instance than there should be it seems to cause the lag, had one run with 4-5 people per lever and 7-8 per room, whole thing stopped, not sure what the intended number of people are but 40 or more seems to break it. i have found no lag in instances where the message pops up when entering that there are less than 16 people and barely 5 min till dragon summoned, usually get a few more somewhere arround 20 seems to be fine.

I was finally able to beat the lag. Thankfully, I didn't give up entirely on Mabar, and the next couple of runs went smoothly. So easy, in fact, that on one try, we had the dragon dead in just over a minute. If there is no lag, the spectral dragon is really no challenge at all, at least for high level (20-25) groups.

One thing I did observe is it seems you are best off getting in to the quest right as the door opens. A couple times I tried getting in to the summoning chamber quite late and found myself in a severely short-manned instance, with maybe 8 people or less when it recommends 16 ppl at a minimum. I'm guessing this occurs if the server fills one instance at a time, and when the first instance is full, it starts a second, and so on, so if you get in on the last instance for that level range, there is a good chance you will be short manned. I guess the trick is to always get into the summoning chamber as soon as the door opens to minimize your risk of being in the last, short manned, quest.

Had no problem with dragon runs that have 4-6 people per chamber and 1-3 people per lever.

Note that the instance closes to new people when all 4 altars are prepped. So part of the tactic to prevent lag is to keep track of people in the instance and keep it sized with enough people to cover the area and not too many to cause crippling lag.
