Hello all,
I'm a little unsure if it is ok to post about a kick-starter project, since it could be seen as advertising. I'm not involved with Obsidian though, just a RPG fan that saw this and want to spread the word. So I hope it is fine to post about it.
Obsidian started a Kickstarter a few days ago to get funding for an RPG like the ones, I think many of us remember with joy (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape:Torment).
You can find more information here:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity
Personally I'm very exited about this one. If they can really create a spiritual successor to games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape:Torment, I know where my time will be spent :)
Part of me is sort of happy they were not able to find a publisher for this project, since I hope the kickstarter can give them free hands to create a good game and not be forced to 'put in clowns, because they are fun' or 'no sex, because..because..just because'.
Anyways, I just wanted to share this with you guys, since I figured some of you would be happy to see it :)

I didn't click the link, but I think what the telling difference will be is whether that site is asking for money or not. If just info, probably okay here in off-topic. If they're soliciting funds, it might get a frown from the Powers.
(that's my non-mod guess just from hanging out around here so much.)

I say good luck to them with their ambitious project. I know Obsidian's previous incarnation, Black Isle had a lot of input to the earlier D&D isometric games but based on what I've seen from them this century they've been lacking.
KOTOR2 paled in comparison to KOTOR and it was generally deigned to be "unfinished". Neverwinter Nights 2 was much better and a step in the right direction but Mask of the Betrayer wasn't the best expansion and even though I bought it, I never even installed Storm of Zehir.
Their first real original IP as far as I know was Alpha Protocol, a sort of modern day Super Spy RPG. I recally being excited about it because the 3 dialogue choices for every conversation were modeled on responces from the three JB's - James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer [suave, clinical & threatining]. Sadly my excitement wained when it got on average of 60% and was supposed to be in a worse state than KOTOR2.
I have no familiarity with the Fallout series [it sounds pretty depressing for the most part] but Obsidian's Fallout New Vegas is raved about often in PC Gamer. I'd need to see more than one example of Obsidian's return to form to go placing a pre order as they've burned me before.
If this is made, and considered good I may investigate it in April 2014.

Only 18 more backers needed to get them to the 50,000 level

Note that not a single member of the original obsidian remains so despite the name its a diffrent company entirely but I have good hopes for it regardless

all of them are still in it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsidian_Entertainment)
perhaps You were thinking of recently resurrected Black Isles Studios (http://www.blackisle.com), which indeed doesn't have any of the original members in it - because most of them are at Obsidian now.

That's the sole reason I haven't started a thread here on day one of the kickstarter.

You must have mistaken Obsidian with Black Isle. Obsidian still has all of it's founders:
Feargus Urquhart, Chris Avellone, Chris Parker, ...

If I recall correctly, the bane of Alpha Protocol has been, that it came out quite buggy. And that reviewers were expecting splinter cell and instead got a game, where for instance, you couldn't hit a thing, if you didn't invest skill points in it. Who would have though, that RPG demanded character attributes development...
In my opinion, Alpha Protocol is one of the more underrated games.

Not only are the founders still there but they have attracted other Black Isle alums like Josh Sawyer and Interplay/Troika/Fallout1&2/TOEE alum Tim Cain.

Only a week to go, it is well funded and has hit the strech goals so far. However today they added a new goal at $2.7 millions. Paladins! I need Paladins to get the full IE game experience, I hope it makes it!

I more excited for the 2.6 goal of a fully creatable party is a huge boost to replayability mind you I can never complain about more classes and since if they hit 2.7it means they've hit 2.6 so I won't complain :)

Well both our wishes are granted we JUST hit 2.7m :D next goal is 2.8m for some famous dude and than the ability to get a Player Fortress (already have player house) at 3.0m than the next step is a whopping 3.5m for a second major city

Yesterday it seemed like it was slowing down but today it picked up steam. I think it may hit the $3 mil so we can get a Stronghold. The $3.5 for a second city seems like a big strech.

I hope they get to 2.8, because Mask of the Betrayer was fantastic.
Strongholds though don't sound appealing. They were boring in both NWN2 and BG2.

Doubtful....just 21 hours to go.
It has already hit it, the official number on kickstarter is $3,461,499 so it looks like $39,000 to go but they have over $100,000 from paypal that they will add in at the end so they are over the $3.5 now.
It has now surpassed Double Fine Adventure as the largest game kickstarter.

Well doesn't even matter now the Kick starter alone has hit 3.5m

Thanks.
Does that Paypal money count towards the $4 Million goal for the purposes of the total improvements to the game they promised to add as stated on the Kickstarter page? How about the 14th level of the mega-dungeon? Do those Paypal donors count towards the 75,000 donor plateau needed for the 14th level? I didn't see anything saying the Paypal stuff would count toward either of those things.

They talk about it on the obsidian forums.

Another old school RPG Kickstarter, anyone remember Realms of Arkania?
The guy who made that is doing this kickstarter, it was a cool game and very hardcore but the kickstarter looks doomed.

Thing is, a lot of people already helped out Obsidian, and already expect a great game to come from it. Seems like there is little interest in this one, as it barely has reached 4% of the desired goal. People will hesitate to support another game, especially in the shadow of Obsidian's.

I already have 3 games I've supported on kickstarter, I'm sort of waiting to see how these turn out before I throw any more money at things. Also this really should have been a new thread.
