View Full Version : A Positive Experience with DDO

I’ve never had the opportunity to try Dungeon and Dragons when I was growing up. Sure I was into my fair share of nerdy entertainment such as Magic the Gathering, Final Fantasy, and anything else I could get my hands on. Somehow I never got into DnD, perhaps from a lack of availability. While I had certainly heard and read more about DnD as time passed by thanks to the Internet the occasion to actually experience it didn’t appear.

Until one day…<insert dramatic music hear>

While browsing a fantasy-related website a review came up for a certain MMO. It was a Dungeons and Dragons themed game and was free-to-play. Eager to finally explore something I had so much second hand experience with I took the plunge and downloaded the game. Plus I had nothing to lose save for some spare time.

Needless to say I found myself enjoying it a lot. There is a lot I could write about but before this post becomes a wall of text a couple of snippets.

-Creating a character, picking a clever name, and fleshing out a character bio for them

-Discovering a rich lore of monsters, history, and magic. Savoring the travel to the Forgotten Realm with its shifting gravity and visual abyss.

-Learning the quests, knowing the in-and-outs of mazes, discovering which spells were optimal for which situations

- Puzzles, all of them. Tile puzzles, lights-out puzzle in The Shroud. Hoping for one day a 4x4 slider tile puzzle or a Simon Says puzzle

-Finding a headset in the attic and having casual conversations over a shared interest in game, leading a party through a difficult quest and accomplishing it.

-The Community, browsing through the forums, DDO podcast, the wiki, crafting guides,
The weekly DDO chronicle and reading through people’s funny comments

The list goes on and I imagine will continue to grow as time passes.

TL;DR: DDO is pretty fun

Go away. Opinions like that are not acceptable around here. This game sucks and if you don't admit that, you shouldn't be allowed to play. ;)

Even with all the bugs and nerfs going on, I can still say I enjoy this venerable game.

I have to agree. Still the best game on the market, as far as I'm concerned.
Party on.

Awesome!
Welcome to the club. :D

Fair warning though, please keep your posts in the future as short and business like as possible.
I had to learn the hard way.
I am STILL catching grief from a few folks, lol.

If you played MtG growing up then you are too young to have played D&D in its heyday (although it was still around if you looked).

Nice to read a note from someone who isn't complaining.

Not really. It's just as big now as it ever was, if you know where to look. There are usually several gaming groups operating out of just about every game shop in the U.S. and you can find those in the yellow pages.

The only difference about what you call the 'heyday' is that it was in the public awareness a lot more due to nutcases giving it bad publicity by claiming they were playing D&D while doing extremely stupid S#*% that had nothing to do with D&D.

A lot of those game groups focus on earlier editions. There's one group I keep thinking about trying to join that only plays 2nd ed at a game shop near me.
